  • Philippine Social Constructs Found in Bob Ong’s Stories

    • Authors: Josephine May Grace Aclan Famoso
      Pages: 25 - 31
Abstract: Literary texts are products of an ideology. Consequently, some Filipinos write about social constructs to uncover and question the existence of a particular social norm. Bob Ong, a Filipino writer, makes readers experience factual events. His novels Macarthur and Kapitan Sino uphold the cultural, economic, and political constructs which made these works vulnerable to be examined from a socio-political perspective. This study used the qualitative-descriptive methodology to show different social classes, conflicts, and resolutions found in the novels. This study also features the ills of society as a reflection of the Philippine society. The following conclusions are drawn: First, that the Philippine social construct can be interpreted based on the Class Conflict theory from the ideology of Karl Marx. Thus, social classes are classified as bourgeoise and proletariat. Second, conflicts are societal in nature and are challenging to resolve. Indeed, the novels reveal concerns that reflect the contemporary Philippine circumstance.

  • Teachers’ Misconception about National Assessment and National
           Examination

    • Authors: Kisno Kisno, Umi Rokhyati, Fenty Nur Fatimah, Rita M Siregar
      Pages: 46 - 58
Abstract: National Assessment is administered as the new policy from The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. It will be administered from September to October 2021. Therefore, teachers are urged to master the concept and the format of national assessment so as to implement it in the learning process. The teachers’ proper understanding on those concept and formats supports the success of national assessment. Despite this fact, most of the teachers were fulfilled with anxiety of the transition from national examination to national assessment. This research attempted to reveal the junior high school teachers’ misconception about National assessment and national examination. A 30-online-multiple-choice test was administered to 50 in-service teachers from both the state and the private junior high schools. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that both the state and the private junior high schools’ teachers experienced three misconceptions about national assessment. Majority of the teachers’ misconception was about the technical administration of national assessment (76%) and the others were about the basic concept of national assessment (65%), and the follow up to result of national assessment (61%). These results suggest the reinforcement and empowerment of the schools concerning the socialization and the prototype or simulation implementation of national assessment.

  • A Descriptive Review of Genre-Based Pedagogy Studies (Towards Genre
Awareness in EFL Context of Indonesia)

    • Authors: Tri Rina Budiwati
      Pages: 59 - 67
Abstract: This paper reviews 11 studies on genre-based pedagogy. The studies have indicated the vital contribution of genre knowledge in EFL context, especially in reading and writing class. Having compared and highlighted the 11 studies, this recent review reveals the great significance of genre knowledge and awareness for EFL teachers and students, namely, they can help students understand genre as created, dynamic and ideological structures, aware of generic structure of texts, then create various type of texts as discourse, develop the rhetorical understanding and participate in the genres, that they can maintain the critical genre awareness. Furthermore, teachers also are more aware that students can create meanings and need supports. The review, then, proposes some ways to improve students' genre awareness that could be applied in EFL classes. The ways are (1) students can be asked to analyze genre gradually to learn the techniques of rhetorical analysis of various genres;  (2) students are asked to criticize and practice writing flexibly various genres based on certain rhetorical patterns, context, and purpose; and (3) in exposing genres, teachers could do the steps recommended, such as finding the purpose and features, language scaffolding, modeling, joint instruction of the text, individual construction of the text, peer review and revision, free discussion and doing the assignment.

  • University Students’ Willingness to Communicate in Virtual Classroom

    • Authors: Hanifah Hanifah, Elsa Ernawati Nainggolan
      Pages: 68 - 82
Abstract: Shifting from real classes to online classes ideally does not decrease students’ willingness to communicate (WTC) in a language classroom since it is an indication of successful language learning in a virtual class. Given the crucial of promoting students’ willingness to communicate in English online class, the present study analyzed the patterns of university students’ WTC in a synchronous virtual class. With this purpose in mind, 43 students taking English for general purposes were chosen as the sample in this study. To gather the data of students’ WTC patterns, the online class using zoom application was observed by administrating the Coding scheme developed by Chao and Philp. The patterns of the students’ WTC were analyzed and classified into six categorizes based on the scheme. The results of the study reveal that the occurrences and patterns of students’ WTC are affected by different task types given by the lecturer. Thus, it is expected that education practitioners construct virtual learning design providing various activities so that students’ WTC in an online classroom can be triggered and enhanced.

  • The Main Character's Jealousy as Seen in Gillian Flynn's Gone
           Girl: A Psychological Approach

    • Authors: Ganesh Yogi Prabowo, Astry Fajria
      Pages: 92 - 102
Abstract: Jealousy is part of human's psychological condition. Similarly, Gillian Flynn employed the topic brilliantly in one of her works, Gone Girl. The present study entitled "The Main Character's Jealousy as Seen in Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl" aimed to identify the main character's personality and to describe the causes and impacts of her jealousy. It belongs to library research, with Gillian Flynn's novel as the subject and the aspects of jealousy the object. Since it is about the human psyche, a psychological approach was employed. Further, the theories of jealousy were used to analyze the data and to answer the research questions. The analysis resulted in several findings. First, Amy Dunne, the main character, was found to be a brilliant and cunning person. Her personality, triggered by jealousy, manifests in her actions throughout the story. Second, Amy Dunne is extremely jealous of her husband. She finds out that Nick, her husband, has an affair with another woman, and the feeling leads to several incidents. Amy disappears, fakes various crime that leads the public to hate her husband, and finally returns home. Amy also kills a man to cover her lies; all were done without anyone's suspicion. It is recommended that the next researchers explore the characters of the story more profoundly or employ the work as one alternative material in ELT class.
