  • Gehørtrening og læring

    • Authors: Bengt Haugseth
      Pages: 15 sider - 15 sider
Ear training and learning outcome
This article presents a study among a smaller group of teacher students on the outcome of a widespread ear training method used in music education. For many years, students in teacher education have learned numerical sight-singing in order to facilitate score reading and understanding of melodic patterns. This study is about measuring how effective this method is, and how much practice is required in order to attain progress. Two relatively similar student groups were included in the survey. One group had ear training, the other did not. Findings from earlier studies indicate that this method is effective in choirs. The results from this study, measured in a pre- and a post-test in score reading and melodic dictation, show that teacher students who practice around 1000 minutes over a 7-month period, are more fluent and accurate in score reading and the ability to recognize melodic patterns. • Pre-service teachers’ experiences with a digital examination design: The
inter-relation between continuity and change in an institutional context

    • Authors: Erik Adalberon, Trond Eiliv Hauge, Roger Säljö
      Pages: 19 - 19
      Abstract:
This article reports a study of a full-scale digital examination in a five-year master program of teacher education in Norway. The innovative design involves observing a video case based on an authentic classroom situation and analysing the case in light of educational theory and subject content knowledge. All parts of this format are to be solved on a computer with Internet access. The study is centred on the pre-service teachers’ experiences of this open-ended and unfamiliar testing format. More specifically, the intention has been to analyse (a) what kinds of preparations they engaged in; (b) how they solved tasks during the examination; (c) their reflections on this mode of examination. Interviews with 11 informants have been conducted, and the content is summarized in three selected cases, and finally across the interview sample. The results indicate that innovations like this are interpreted and approached against the background of pre-service teachers’ expectations, and the open format engaged the pre-service teachers to draw upon a wide range of resources both when preparing and solving the tasks. It is, however, timely to question whether the introduction of the examination format, based on faculty interest and intentions, will have the intended impact on evaluation procedures in an established learning culture.

    • Authors: May-Britt Revheim Brekke, Marianne Leikvoll Eide
      Pages: 20 sider - 20 sider

This article draws attention to how reflection and transformation can be promoted through experiential narratives as a student-active learning activity when teaching pedagogics in the teacher education. In our work on the experiential narrative, we have a different approach than the traditional deductive teaching method. In a professional education, it is required to be able to connect and develop an interaction between different forms of knowledge, such as an exchange between the particular and the general, where transcendent reflection on the students’ own understandings and experiences is significant. This article is based on participatory observation at the first level in teacher education, and finds that several factors affect the quality of the reflection and the pedagogical thinking. This includes the quality of the experiential narrative itself, the students' perception of the role of the pedagogical theory, and to what extent there is a room for challenge and support. One cannot expect that reflection processes come automatically or without support, but these processes can be initiated through systematic teaching that opens for expanding own experiences in the meeting with generalized knowledge.

  • Interessebasert kroppsøving

    • Authors: Steffen Tangen, Birgitte Nordahl Husebye
      Pages: 21 sider - 21 sider
Interest-based physical education
Research suggests that some students do not perceive the current physical education system as meaningful, and to them, the prevailing sports discourse in physical education could be counterproductive (Säfvenbom, Haugen & Bulie, 2015). There is little knowledge on how different forms of organisation can make physical education more meaningful for students. This study uses qualitative interviews with five pupils and a focus group of four teachers to examine how students experience physical education, and their motivation for physical edu¬cation, when they participate in a new organisational model known as “interest-based physical education” (IBPE). In IBPE, students may choose between either “joy of sport” or “joy of movement”. Students work towards the same competence goals in both models, but their approach will be different. Joy of movement has a playful approach to activity while joy of sport focuses more on sports development. The main idea of IBPE is that students may choose a model of physical education that accords with their own experiences, values and interests. In the current study, IBPE appears to facilitate autonomous motivation and create a learning environment where students experience a meaningful content in a safe and supportive context. Although the present results are encouraging, there is still a need for more research on the potential of IBPE to influence pupils’ motivation for and development in physical education. • Informal language in English L2 writing: What are pupils taught from
           textbooks'

    • Authors: Ingrid Kristine Hasund
      Pages: 25 - 25
      Abstract:
Studies show that intermediate and advanced learners of English overuse informal features in their academic writing, and researchers recommend that instructional material is developed to raise learners’ awareness of this overuse. In Norway, little research has been done on younger learners’ writing, and no previous study exists of how instructional material such as textbooks deal with informality. The present article investigates how all English textbooks published for lower secondary school under the current curriculum deal with informality in writing.
The findings show that eight out of nine textbooks include instruction on informality. The most frequently mentioned informal features are informal opening/closing phrases and forms of address in letters, contractions, abbreviations, slang, exclamations, and expressions of modality, evaluation and subjective stance, all of which are known from previous research and/or style manuals. The textbook instructions focus on when to use these features and, more importantly, when to avoid them.
Rather unexpectedly, there is little focus on the first person pronoun as an informal feature, which is notable, considering its importance in the literature. First person pronoun usage is, however, a controversial topic, and it is possible that most textbook authors have decided to leave it for later stages. It is also possible that the textbook authors do not consider it an informal feature.
The survey provides a backdrop for future research on pupils’ writing by focussing on one aspect of the school context in which this writing is produced, namely the textbooks. Keywords: informal language; English L2 writing, textbook analysis Uformelt språk i engelsk skriving: Hva sier lærebøkene' Sammendrag
