  • Academic Self-Efficacy, Satisfaction and Academic Adjustment of
           Undergraduates in University of Calabar, Cross River State

      Abstract: Successful transition and academic adjustment of fresh students in the University is a major concern to the university authority, parents and students alike. Increasing students’ self-efficacy and satisfaction academically may be of great help since it will stimulate modification in university environment, support adjustment and may lead to higher performance level.  It is against this backdrop that this study investigated the influence of academic self-efficacy and satisfaction on academic adjustment of year one students in University of Calabar, Calabar Cross River State. The population of the study was 1025 year one students in the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study.  Academic Self- Efficacy, Satisfaction and Academic Adjustment Questionnaire (ASSAQ) was used for data collection. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical technique was used for analysis. The result showed significant influence of academic self-efficacy and satisfaction on academic adjustment. Based on the finding, it was recommended among others that group counselling should be organized at the beginning of each academic year by the counselling unit of the university on adjustment for the new students for them to share their experiences and learn from one another.

  • Analyse des stratégies d’apprentissage des étudiants de FLE du
           Département de français à « University of Education,Winneba »

      Abstract: Cette étude examine les stratégies d’apprentissage chez les étudiants de FLE à l’University of Education, Winneba (UEW). Notre point de départ hypothétique est que la plupart de nos étudiants n’applique pas des stratégies d’apprentissage lors de leur apprentissage du FLE. Le but de l’étude est d’analyser les difficultés d’application des stratégies d’apprentissage du FLE chez les étudiants du Département de français à UEW. 120 étudiants de la troisième année ont répondu au questionnaire contenant 35 items. Les données obtenues ont été traitées par le logiciel statistique SPSS. L’échelle de Likert a été employée comme technique pour la classification avant l’analyse. Les résultats de notre enquête indiquent que la plupart des étudiants manquent de stratégies d’apprentissage et font face à des difficultés de pratiques de la langue française. L’étude a donc suggéré que les enseignants expliquent aux étudiants l’importance de la pratique de la langue par soi à travers des répétitions des mots et des phrases, de la mémorisation des concepts, de la prise de note et de la révision. Par ailleurs, ils doivent aussi les aider à savoir et à comprendre les stratégies dont ils auront besoin pour apprendre eux-mêmes sans l’aide d’autrui. De plus, ils doivent enseigner aux étudiants à pouvoir gérer leur émotion et aussi à réduire leurs anxiétés dans leur apprentissage tout en coopérant avec les autres  étudiants.

  • Students Use of Social Media and its Relationship with their Academic
           Achievement in the University of Education, Winneba

      Abstract: The emergence of social media has bedeviled society with so many questions on its impact in recent times, especially in the Ghanaian context. There seem to be negative exposure on the use of social media. This study, therefore, examined the impact of social media on the academic achievement of students of University of Education, Winneba-Winneba Campus. It sought to examine the type, frequency and impact of social media on the academic achievement of students. The descriptive case study design was for the study. The proportional stratified random sampling technique was used to sample 510 students from four faculties in the University of Education, Winneba campus. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. The questionnaire was analysed using frequency and percentages and Person Product Moment Correlation. The study revealed that social media exerted positive impacts on students’ academic achievements since students used social media to access educational materials and improve their reading and research skills. Students who used social media mostly for academic purposes saw an improvement in their GPAs (GPAs between 3.0 and 4.0 on a scale of 4). Students who often used social media for entertainment, sports and other non-academic purposes, however, had lower GPAs (GPAs between 1.5 and 2.0 on a scale of 4). It was recommended, therefore, that students should embrace the positive aspects of social media to augment their academic performance. The Academic Board of the university should encourage lecturers to employ social media sites such as WhatsApp, Twitter and LinkedIn vehicles for conveying academic content and other academic discourses.

  • Digital Media Literacy in Africa: Precautionary Principle and Discourse
           Strategies

      Abstract: An active involvement in the digital platform such as Internet immediately suggests a strong sense of connectivity and interactivity with a logic that exposes users to both risks and opportunities. This study therefore argued that risks among digital natives can be curbed and opportunities maximally utilized through digital media literacy. The research employed a social survey method with the instrumentation of questionnaire for data collection and was anchored on media literacy theory and social learning theory as theoretical framework. Taro Yamane’s statistical formula was used while 200 respondents were selected from CRUTECH, Ogoja campus for the study. The research used purposive and non-purposive sample techniques. Simple tables, frequencies and percentages were employed to gather, present and analyse data. The findings revealed that, 77% of the respondents affirmed that Internet promotes risks such as crimes and unethical behavours; 71% of the respondents stated that Internet enhances studies and creates opportunities while 79% said digital media literacy helps in coping with risks and opportunities among users. However, the study concluded that, digital media literacy is quintessential in dealing with risks and opportunities in both virtual and physical life. Among others, the study recommended that digital media literacy is essential, should be promoted by both private and public sectors at all levels and be incorporated into school curriculums.

  • Using Information and Communication Technology to Improve the Use of
           Microscope among Year Two Veterinary Nursing Students

      Abstract: The study was conducted to determine whether ICT can be used to improve upon the use of the microscope among year two Veterinary Nursing students of the University for Development Studies (UDS). It also sought to assess whether the use of microscope by way of ICT could motivate students to learn Microbiology. Students were randomly grouped into two groups (ICT and non-ICT) of ten each. ICT students were trained on the use of the microscope using PowerPoint and video while non-ICT students were trained using the lecture method. After training, a test, self-administered questionnaire and practical session was conducted. Data collected using questionnaire was analysed using SPSS.  Majority of the students aged between 18-35years, were males and gain admission to UDS directly from senior high school. All the students know about ICT, it meaning and tools. They have also heard and seen the microscope prior to this study either at the veterinary hospital or school but lack enough practical experience. Most of them (95%) practically used the microscope for the first time during this study (at UDS laboratory). The ICT students performed better in the test than non-ICT students. Non-ICT students (90%) stated that their motivation to learn microbiology would have improved if they were trained using ICT. ICT students were highly motivated (70%) for being trained on the use of the microscope using ICT. ICT students also experienced intrinsic motivation (100%), self-efficacy (90%), self-determination (100%), grade motivation (100%) and career motivation (100%). Of all respondents (ICT and non-ICT) indications were that, the use of ICT would increase investigative strategies of students (100%), improve retentive their memory (95%), ease tasks when using the microscope (90%) and make lessons enjoyable (85%). Few of the respondents envisaged problems of using ICT with regards to electricity (20%), hazardous nature to the eyes (15%), breeding laziness among students (15%) and could be expensive (10%). All ICT students were able to operate the microscope faster without guidance than non-ICT students.

  • Investigating The Use of Mobile –Based Technology to Enhance Service
           Delivery at the University of Education, Winneba, Library

      Abstract: The application of mobile phone technology in all aspects of our everyday life cannot be ignored in institutions and establishments including libraries. Therefore libraries in developed economies have embraced the mobile phone revolution and are utilizing them for effective and efficient services. In contrast, however, mobile - based services are not pervasive among academic libraries in Ghana. They are yet to be embraced by academic and research libraries. This paper reports findings of a survey on mobile - based library services conducted at the University of Education, Winneba. The aim of the study was to seek the views of users regarding the use of mobile phones in library services. It sought to find whether they would be interested in using such service. It also aimed at identifying perceived benefits and challenges associated with mobile- based library services. A survey design was therefore adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of undergraduate students who patronised the library between May and June, 2017. Through systematic simple random sampling technique six hundred and eleven (611) students were selected for the study. The students involved were from different departments in the university. The questionnaire for data collection contained both closed and open-ended items. The questionnaires were retrieved right on the spot so there was a high return rate.  After going through the questionnaires 604 were found to be usable for data analysis. Data gathered was analysed using percentages and frequency counts. The possible advantages and challenges associated with mobile based library services at the library were also identified. The results of this survey indicated that users had positive attitude towards mobile- based library services. A number of relevant recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.
