In other words, it is the turning of what “is” human sideways, burying, killing, or transforming our Westernized dominant mythos of “humanism” in favor of something…otherwise.

  • Our monsters, ourselves: Desire, death and deviance in the Gothic
           narratives and how they in-form an inquiry of currere

      Abstract: This paper explores the idea that the creation of the monsters’ existence at the hands of Gothic authors, such as Mary Shelley, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Brahm Stoker, serves as fictionalized examples of the inquiry of currere (or “ficto-currere” [McDermott, 2019]), and the exploration of “possibility.” Mary Shelley, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Bram Stoker’s social and personal life experiences have evidently influenced their writings. This auto-ethnographic element of their stories, this self-examination and incorporation of their life experiences, becomes their currere. Through this lens of currere, their stories can tell us a lot about controversial topics that were too taboo to straightforwardly address during the 1800s, when they were written—topics such as mental and physical illnesses or queering sexual identity. The author suggests that this depends not on being rationalized, but on being “poeticized,” as happens through the three examples of speculative fiction examined here. The author extends the dread and desire of the monstrous “afflicted” identities of these authors within their historical contexts toward curriculum. The monstrosity of the desires and the dread for each of the gothic authors examined in this paper is considered from the perspective of currere-as-inquiry.

  • Superheroes as Monsters as Teachers as Monsters as Superheroes

      Abstract: Superheroes offer a promise of not only a better tomorrow, but better versions that we, as humans, can be.  They represent the epoch of our evolution, and as demonstrated by their continued popularity, it is a promise that speaks to many of us directly.  This said, another reason that superheroes are intriguing, from a curriculum studies perspective, is how the superhero trope has been overlaid onto teachers and teaching.  “Teachers are the real superheroes,” the saying goes.  But is this belief, like superheroes themselves, simply a myth or story we tell ourselves'  Is it the hope or promise that never arrives' If so, is it to shield us from some monstrous truth'  Could it be that superheroes represent something much darker'  Using several superhero examples, the television series Westworld, and the work of Sylvia Wynter, this paper posits that superheroes, as a metaphor for teachers, are problematic because of their true monstrous nature and that the better metaphor are the “hosts” in Westworld who are seemingly monsters but are actually “heroes.”

  • Bellies that Go Bump in the Night The Gothic Curriculum of Essential
           Motherhood in the Alien Movie Franchise

      Abstract: For centuries, authors and storytellers have used Gothic tales to educate readers about all manner of subjects, but one of the most common of those subjects is the question of what it means to be human (Bronfen, 2014). In these classic Gothic tales, a key focus is also the horrific results of an out-of-control and “unnatural” form of reproduction. These stories reveal a kind of social anxiety centered on “marriage or on social and sexual relations between the sexes” and explore how those relations are “threatened or abrogated” due to changes in the culture (Riquelme, 2000, p. 585-6). The Gothic obsession with essential motherhood is used to illustrate for the audience what it means to be essentially female, and it is an obsession that has continued into modern day. Although much has changed regarding the role of gender, sexuality, and motherhood in contemporary, Western society, our Gothic stories continue to explore portrayals of essential, heteronormative motherhood, which are used to teach a presumed young male audience about modern womanhood. One iconic example of such a modern-Gothic story is found in the Alien movie franchise. In this paper, the author examines the first four films in this franchise in order to investigate how the concept of essential motherhood impacts the ultimate definition of womanhood depicted in these films. The the film series is shown to establish certain cultural “truths”: essential motherhood is a cultural reality; our culture is not comfortable with a definition of womanhood outside of essential motherhood; and these issues may only be worked out among those who take up the mantle of womanhood as they talk with each other and figure out for themselves what it may mean to no longer be defined solely by their generative capacities.

  • Cinema of the Monstrous: Disability and “Eye-Feel”

      Abstract: This paper explores the role of embodied visuality in the formation of stigma toward representations of mental illness in Hollywood movies. Including Foucauldian theory and perspectives from the disciplines of disability studies and media literacy, this paper advocates for the use of curricular materials that may offset monstrous and otherizing portrayals of persons with psychiatric disablilities.

  • The other bad men at the door: Ontological spaces and the monstrous

      Abstract: The project here lies in putting two texts—The Walking Dead (TWD) and True Detective (Season 1)—to work in the effort of pedagogy, looking at the text as curriculum and as a way to teach curriculum theorizing through the use of popular culture.  Using a cultural studies framework, this paper suggests that contemporary popular culture provides fertile ground for new understandings of the ways in which the socio-cultural context and its relation to contemporary issues in curriculum theory are entangled in the ethical and the ontological.  In particular, representations of the spatial in the show/s provide an entrée into thinking about the ways in which space is increasingly politicized within contemporary conditions. I argue that these two shows are primarily about ontology—what it means to be, or perhaps in the “posts,” what might it mean to become.   For a zombie show like TWD, this may seem obvious as we witness the transformation of the dead to the undead, but as has been offered all over the internet, the show is really about the human (or post-human') characters. True Detective, at least at first glance, a more traditional, film noir, Southern gothic crime drama, buries these questions a little deeper and requires one to think through the dialogue and overall structure to push the ontological.  Both shows involve the monstrous, however (spoiler alert), at the end of the day…the monstrous is us.

  • Time to Die: Zombie as Educational Evolution in The Girl with All the
           Gifts

      Abstract: Unique among horror tropes, the zombie apocalypse narrative must usually conclude either with a cure or a profoundly transformed new world. The Girl with All the Gifts (Clarke & McCarthy, 2016) instead offers a view of a world in transition – a world that offers illuminating questions for theorizing educational reform. What does it mean to come through infection with your humanity intact' What does it mean to survive a contagion so universal that it’s impossible to transcend it unchanged'  The in-betweenness of humans who perservere in the strange new world must become “something not like anything that has existed before,” which suggest that survival in the neoliberal educational policy milieu may require reformers to become both less and more than they expect.

  • Speculative Fiction, Post Human Desire and Inquiry of Currere

      Abstract: Every generation has its monsters. They evoke our deepest desires, our fears, and our curiosities. They are the unknown…the uncontrollable; fraught with terror and possibility. Possibility oftentimes emerges through fiction. Fiction is not the opposite of fact; it is the opposite of finitude. While it is defensible to assert that reality exists beyond texts, much of what we think of as “real” is—and can only be—apprehended through fictional texts. Monsters are us. They reflect and refract our fragmented collective and individual identities. Blood’s Will: Speculative Fiction, Existence and Inquiry of Currere (McNulty, 2018) which is the focus of this presentation, offers a philosophical treatise by virtue of its speculative fiction genre, which enables the author and the characters to examine inquiry and existence in imaginative ways not limited by definitive proofs. This narrative inquiry novel centers on a complicated love story between a mortal woman and vampire. But the story is also about free will, identity, and possibilities of existence. The vampire’s existence serves as a fictionalized example of the inquiry of currere and the exploration of “possibility” that depends not on being rationalized, but on being “poeticized,” as happens through speculative fiction. In this story, currere is perceived through the role of the author’s own autobiography in shaping the story. Campbell and Finn (the main characters) both explore (process, cycle, examine, and return to) their intertwined life journeys as an example of how fictional characters can exemplify the four stages of currere inquiry. Choosing a love-story-in-crisis—between a mortal and supernatural character was intentional, as the options and issues illustrated in their relationship are distinctly different than they would have been had both characters been limited by mortality. The process of writing a work of auto-fiction, as well as the narrative of this story itself, both serve as process of inquiry as possibilities, which embodies, “the middle passage, that passage in which movement is possible from the familiar to the unfamiliar, to estrangement, then to a transformed situation” (Pinar, Reynolds,  Slattery, & Taubman, 1995, p. 548). Given that the vampire “never dies,” one might assume the journey across and between the four stages could go on in perpetuity. What possibilities might lie beyond our current finitudes' The role of un-death provided the trope necessary to examine the more existential questions that confront us mortals—the author wrestles with the same questions as the characters. Both the writing process and narrative product remind us that, “We are not the stories we tell as much as we are the modes of relations our stories imply, modes of relations implied by what we delete as much as what we include” (Pinar, 1994, p. 218). The role of the novel in inquiry is to implode boundaries, to invite possibility, and offer an example of writing our ficto-currere.   • Learning Spirits: Spectral Pedagogy and Vegan Horror

      Abstract: This paper examines “the figure of the animal” in horror cinema, and in particular the ways its deployment reveals deep anxieties about our treatment of nonhumans more generally. A specifically vegan horror, as opposed to the categories of animal horror cinema and eco-horror, is proposed: a genre tendency that presents narratives that destabilize distinctions between “man” and “beast” while enacting modes of seeing that allow for the possibility of radical kinship. Finally, through a close reading of The Texas Chan Saw Massacre as a pivotal text, this paper argues that vegan horror can disturb fields of vision in ways that teach us to see others not as means to instrumental ends but instead as a multiplicity of interests and desires.
