Research-Based Articles and Governance Case Studies

  Abstract: Three unique articles begin this issue. The first article is by Alaimo and Park, who examine the use of video on philanthropic and nonprofit studies programs. It is the first critical analysis of this area of pedagogy published in JNEL and, for those who use videos in their classes, a must read. The second article, by Brenning, deals with effectiveness of nonprofit organizations and policy in India. This article has a strong discussion on classroom teaching and workshop presentation. Not only will it be enjoyable to read, but it should trigger thoughts to improve your teaching regardless of whether that is in the academy or as a consultant in the field. In the third article, Jones and Daniel share research on a technique to increase donor engagement and offer suggestions on the training of fundraising professionals. Use of Video in Philanthropic and Nonprofit Studies Programs

  Abstract: The effectiveness of using video content for teaching and learning has mixed reviews, but some potential positive outcomes include students improving their creativity, experiencing higher levels of interaction, increasing self-efficacy, and engaging in meaningful reflection. This exploratory study examined how higher education instructors in philanthropic and nonprofit studies programs in the United States use video in their courses. The purpose of this study was to discover what role video has in student learning outcomes, how instructors incorporate visual literacy into their use of video, and the overall effect video content has on student learning experience. This study reveals that although many philanthropic and nonprofit studies instructors are using video effectively to contribute positively to student learning outcomes, their lack of knowledge and training in visual literacy remains a concern.Subscribe to JNEL

Effectiveness of Nonprofit Organizations and Policy: A Systematic Review
of Sustainable Initiatives in India

  Abstract: The imbalanced sex ratio at birth (SRB) is a significant factor that influences the stability and security of nations. This study sought to test whether the presence of government and civil society initiatives intended to curb the SRB in India was accompanied by a positive change in the child sex ratio (CSR) over the time of the intervention. An empirical model was created to test 112 initiatives, which included 80 state-level and 35 district-level initiatives. The CSR was calculated before and after each initiative. Of the initiatives, 51% were linked with a positive CSR over time. States that had a 5% and above positive change in the CSR also had 7+ initiatives over time, indicating that intervention may be influencing the CSR. Program best practices are recommended based on initiatives with a positive CSR over time. Based on the analysis of these findings, leadership structures of these nonprofits ought to shift toward shared leadership, and nonprofit curriculum ought to emphasize and grow international service learning programs and transnational distance learning opportunities.Subscribe to JNEL

A Method for Research and Practice: Using a Developmentally Informed
Interview to Increase Donor Engagement

  Abstract: In this article, we argue that researchers and fundraisers can use a theoretical framework from developmental psychology and its related assessment technique to explain philanthropic giving and improve fundraising practices. Specifically, a constructive developmental interview approach will help fundraisers to identify how donors might react to specific types of information, communication styles, and measures of success (or failure), particularly as it relates to complex problem solving (e.g., climate change or poverty). First, we present Robert Kegan’s model of constructive adult development and the related Subject-Object Interview developed with Lisa Lahey. Then we provide examples of the sorts of insights that can be drawn from this technique and identify challenges for researchers and fundraisers using the technique. We conclude by outlining a research agenda and offering recommendations for fundraiser trainings.Subscribe to JNEL
