Authors:Justice Mensah, Aba Nyameyie Mensah, Godwin Awabil Pages: 1 - 19 Abstract: Although distance education (DE) is steadily deepening its relevance in the contemporary global higher education landscape, its management is beset with challenges in some developing countries. This study examined the challenges in managing postgraduate DE programs in a public higher education institution in a Sub-Saharan African country. Qualitative data were gathered from course facilitators, managers of the programs, and students, through structured interviews and focus group discussions. It was established that the programs faced challenges related to course material development, internet access, access to the library, Information and Communication Technology, and physical infrastructure, The programs were more print-media supported and face-to-face based than technology-anchored and online-based. For purposes of modernity, cost-effectiveness, and continuous quality improvement, the program managers should develop course manuals and modules and utilise technology-supported virtual teaching and learning instead of the current state of overreliance on face-to-face interactions. For sustainability reasons, the program managers should devise innovative ways of making the programs more practice-oriented to meet the demands of the growing competitive job market. Authors:Justice Mensah, Aba Nyameyie Mensah, Godwin Awabil Pages: 20 - 39 Abstract: Automatic assessment can reduce teacher workload and offer flexibility for students, but if the teacher does not assess the exams manually, the teacher's view of the students' competence and exam-related behaviours will be meagre. This drawback can be mitigated through appropriate analytics. To support the design of an analytics module for an electronic assessment system, this paper investigates what kinds of analyses are useful for multiple-choice exams and how the analysis can be implemented. Three types of analysis were found useful: 1) descriptive statistics of exam answers; 2) analysis of errors in answers; and 3) analysis of students' exam-taking behaviours. Though these analyses are to some extent generalisable, analysis needs vary, for example, by time, exam type and user. Therefore, it is suggested that to enable user-specific analyses in a resource-efficient manner, assessment software providers should facilitate access to assessment data in a structured format. Authors:Sampa Catherine Mwape, Douglas Kunda Pages: 40 - 62 Abstract: Research in educational data mining to establish or predict the retention of students in higher education institutions, as well as predict graduation performance abounds. This research is a data mining based project aimed at generating a model that can be used for predicting student's ability to graduate on time. In this research we have examined various factors such as age, gender, continuous assessment results, and final exam results, determine how they influence a student's graduation schedule. We have demonstrated our application of classification as a data mining technique to identify interesting patterns, and subsequently use predictive techniques to predict the possible consequent outcome, and further have conducted a detailed examination of the J48, Bayes Net, PART and Random Forest predictive algorithms and compared to draw conclusions on the data mining prediction tools that give optimum results. The J48 stood out in terms of performance output. Authors:Sampa Catherine Mwape, Douglas Kunda Pages: 63 - 78 Abstract: Since providing entrepreneurship education to students without examining its impact might not lead to achieving the desired goals, coupled with the lack of research on the impact of online entrepreneurship education, it is important to understand the role and effectiveness of this medium of teaching to develop entrepreneurial students. Thus, this study explores the direct effect of online entrepreneurship education on Egyptian students' entrepreneurial attitude, self-efficacy, and interest, to inform educators if they will need to adjust their pedagogical approaches, to improve the students' learning outcomes and as well universities to put right strategies for their online entrepreneurship education programs. A survey based on the Engineering Entrepreneurship Survey developed by Duval-Couetil, Reed-Rhoads and Haghighi, was emailed to a total of 400 university students enrolled in entrepreneurship courses, divided into two groups according to the medium of delivery. The results have shown that online EE has a positive impact on students, however, it remains less than online EE.
