  • Characterizing Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract To help higher education instructors, academic support personnel, and institutional leadership better identify, encourage, incentivize, fund, support and assess pedagogical innovation, we describe herein a valid taxonomy capable of precisely characterizing the range of pedagogical innovations in higher education. The Taxonomy of Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education probes the Focus of Innovation, Degree of Innovation, Intended Outcomes, Barriers to Adoption, Risks of Adoption, and direct and indirect Costs. Using two scenarios, we illustrate how to apply the taxonomy to a pedagogical innovation with different sets of contextual factors. We conclude by discussing how the taxonomy might help provide a shared vocabulary for and understanding of pedagogical innovation, align pedagogical innovation to priorities, inform investment strategy, characterize an institution’s innovation culture, and help to guide efforts to assess the impact of pedagogical innovations.

  • Evaluation of STEM Program on Student Intercultural Development: Do
           Intercultural Interventions Work'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Developing an interculturally competent STEM workforce is the need of time. Research has demonstrated that STEM students find it challenging to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This study used Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) instrument to understand the intercultural learning gains of technology students by administrating the survey in the program’s first year and final year. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistics to assess the intercultural learning gains of the students. The study results indicate that students demonstrated a statistically significant increase in intercultural competence as they progressed from their first year to their final year of college. The study also indicated that having an intercultural mindset and participating in intercultural activities such as study abroad programs or intercultural mentoring can help students internalize intercultural competence and make meaningful gains on the intercultural development continuum. The study also provides recommendations to help students develop interculturally.

  • The Integration of Gender Equality (SDG 5) into University Teaching: the
           View from the Frontline

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Most universities are working committedly towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The University of Alicante (UA) (Spain) has designed a series of strategies to help crystallize its aims within these goals, including those related to gender equality (SDG 5). Given the context, the aims of this study are (1) to find out whether teachers integrate SDG 5 into their teaching and, if so, what strategies they use, (2) to analyse how they perceive the effects of this and what factors help or hinder the process, and (3) to check for possible differences in these perceptions according to sex and faculty. Some 310 teachers from all the UA faculties participated. A descriptive and comparative analysis was performed, as was a content analysis. Half of the participants were found to be implementing these strategies, with women in general and teachers from the Faculty of Humanities in particular appearing to be most aware of the subject. However, only a minority applied them on a mainstream basis. The most used strategy was inclusive language. Other strategies, such as reflecting on equality, promoting equal participation, visibilizing women in different areas of knowledge, equal treatment of students and gender research, were also present in their narratives but to only a very small degree. Improved professional development for teachers and greater student awareness of gender issues were identified as positive effects of incorporating these strategies. Participants also felt that low awareness and a lack of time and training were obstacles to the process. Universities should therefore establish specific institutional policies aimed at integrating SDG 5 as a quality indicator. Training programmes should be redesigned to take into account a more practical approach, the type of learning (classroom, online or mixed), and subsequent follow-up in the classroom to guarantee effective integration.

  • Teaching About and Through Human-Centered Design in Higher Education
           Classrooms: Exploring Instructors’ Experiences

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract In higher education settings, instructors play a critical role in integrating Human-Centered Design (HCD) in existing and new courses. This study explores how instructors teach about and through HCD in higher education settings and what challenges they encounter as they do so. Participants were four faculty members and four graduate teaching assistants from four different courses. The participants were interviewed after their course ended for the semester. A phronetic iterative analysis approach was used to analyze the transcribed interview data. Findings indicated that when teaching about and through HCD, instructors intentionally and purposefully plan to integrate HCD, implement targeted instructional strategies to scaffold students’ learning of disciplinary content and HCD concepts, provide multiple forms of assessment and feedback, and facilitate collaboration between students, peers, and classroom visitors for deeper engagement in learning. Nevertheless, teaching about and through HCD is challenging and requires further specific teaching competencies that can empower instructors to integrate HCD in their courses.

  • “A Broader Audience to Affect Change'”: How Education Faculty
Conceptualize “Audience” When Producing Public Scholarship

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Many faculty perform work as public intellectuals, producing essays, op-eds, interviews, and other forms of media to amplify their academic work. However, educational research has not examined how faculty conceptualize non-academic audiences, influencing who faculty address in their public scholarship and what they work on as public intellectuals. This study engaged with 14 education faculty members to explore how these individuals conceptualized the audiences for their public scholarship. Findings suggest faculty often conceptualize audiences of public scholarship as larger, non-academic audiences, speaking to the constraints of academic audiences. However, faculty often described their audiences as being educated, being educators, and being passionate about education—identities that they held—possibly perpetuating a public echo chamber between education faculty and educators in the public sphere. Implications for faculty development and public scholarship are addressed.

  • How do we Address Faculty Burnout' Start by Exploring Faculty
           Motivation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The discourse around the discontent of faculty, staff, and students has been growing since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. While much of the conversation about how to address the issues facing higher education is well-intentioned, efforts to help faculty do not go deep enough to the core of their identity. In this work, we describe a survey we designed and implemented that explores faculty motivation and perceptions of the faculty job. What we have learned through this limited sample is that intellectual engagement and a passion for education motivate faculty rather than some of the more conventional dimensions of motivation such as money or benefits. Faculty find teaching to be enjoyable, interesting, and important–arguably the best part of their job–and they have positive views of their students. These findings suggest that faculty developers might rethink their approach to working with faculty and do so in a way that aligns with the faculty motivations revealed in this research.

  • LGBTQ+ Inclusion: A Pilot Interdisciplinary Professional Development
Program for Faculty, Clinicians, and Administrators in Higher Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract LGBTQ+ communities experience significant healthcare and academic success disparities due to barriers in care, negative attitudes towards them, and lack of awareness among healthcare providers and educators. Addressing the unique health and wellbeing concerns of LGBTQ+ individuals in the classroom and clinic requires cultural competency among educators and health professionals, yet knowledge and training in this content is lacking. Thus, we created, piloted, and assessed a six-month interdisciplinary professional development program to enhance knowledge, attitudes, awareness, and cultural humility around LGBTQ+ health for educators, administrators, and clinicians in higher education. Participants were surveyed with standardized assessments pre- and post-program to measure their knowledge, skills, and readiness to teach these topics and incorporate them into their curricula and practice. Participants (n = 33) completed LGBTQ+ inclusivity training including six structured learning sessions, small group mentoring meetings, and a virtual visit to an LGBTQ+ community center. Participants consistently displayed interest and engaged actively in training sessions. In a follow-up survey seven months post-intervention, respondents reported changes in their practice to create inclusive environments. Data analysis demonstrated improved knowledge and comfort with LGBTQ+ care and readiness and willingness to integrate LGBTQ+ care into their curricula and interactions with students. These findings suggest that this interdisciplinary professional development pilot offers a useful program to enable educators and clinicians to support the unique needs of LGBTQ+ communities.

  • Black Religious Engagement and Post-College Educational Pathways: The Role
           of Demographic Variables

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This article employs quantitative critical race theory (QuantCrit), set against a historical context backdrop, to understand key aspects of Black religious engagement and post-college educational pathways. The variables selected for this study illuminate post-graduation outcomes for Black students valued by the Freedmen’s Bureau and other similarly focused organizations that coalesced immediately before, during, and shortly after the American Civil War. Data from the 1979-80 National Survey of Black Americans (NSBA) provides the content for an analysis herein of Black Americans engaging in the church following college graduation and their pursuit of advanced degrees. This survey conducted roughly 100 years following the Civil War, has remained influential to policymakers to the present day and allows an opportunity to reflect on today’s views on Black education at this sesquicentennial juncture. So doing provides for a reconceptualization of Black post-college success as originally imagined by organizations dedicated to social and educational initiatives for freedmen and remains independent of the metrics that often obscure the landscape and perception of Black post-college success.

  • Associations of Intrinsic Motivation and External Pressures with Engaged
Learning Pedagogies by Faculty Teaching Capstone Experiences: A Mixed
           Methods Approach

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Capstone experiences (CEs) are established high impact practices (HIPs) designed so students can synthesize their knowledge and skills obtained across their academic training. Understanding how instructors’ intrinsic motivation and external expectations influence the design of CEs can help institutions create resources to support instructors when developing and teaching CEs. We aimed to determine whether different levels of intrinsic motivation were associated with: (1) demographics of faculty teaching CEs, (2) structure of CEs, (3) pedagogy or assignments used by faculty teaching CEs, and (4) use of resources and/or perceived resource effectiveness available to faculty teaching CEs. We used a fixed convergent mixed methods approach in which quantitative and qualitative research questions were distributed via survey and interviews, respectively. Data were collected and analyzed independently. Analyzed data were merged to compare and interpret qualitative and quantitative results pertaining to faculty perceptions of motivation related to teaching CEs. Instructors who develop and teach CEs are highly intrinsically motivated. The quantitative and qualitative data reveal the instructors’ perceptions of value of and their interest in the CE were the most common intrinsic motivators. The participants with the highest levels of intrinsic motivation used more evidence-based pedagogical approaches, reported higher colleague recognition, and reported access to more teaching resources. Understanding the factors that promote motivation to develop and teach CEs is imperative to support instructor and student success when engaging in this type of HIP.

  • “This Wall Does More for Mental Health than the Uni Does”: Theorising
Toilet Graffiti as Safe House for Students

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Despite sometimes being considered unworthy of scholarly attention, the study of toilet graffiti, also known as latrinalia, has nevertheless garnered increasing interest among researchers. Graffiti writing still suffers from the stigma of being associated with transgression, vandalism, and a deviant subculture. However, findings from this study show that writing on the restroom wall can facilitate a unique form of communication among the writers. Drawing from semiotic linguistic landscaping and serendipity as methodological inspiration, this research explores data collected from a women's restroom at a UK university over a ten-month period. It examines how restroom users utilized the graffiti-covered wall as a safe house and a repository for their anxieties and concerns. The findings illustrate a palpable emotional connection to this specific wall, where writers seek and offer advice, share personal struggles, and provide mutual support to the extent that they see it as contributing more to their mental health than the university does. Through an analysis of the conversational threads present in the graffiti, this study underscores the potential for examining latrinalia within educational institutions to gain valuable and meaningful insights into the student body. The main implication is for educators to consider innovative, non-traditional ways of reaching out to students outside of the formal spaces of learning such as classrooms and libraries. This study, therefore, encourages us to reconsider toilet graffiti as potentially offering an additional or supplementary communication platform for individuals who might otherwise lack the confidence to express themselves openly through traditional means of soliciting feedback.

  • Belonging Interrupted: Toward an Understanding of How Virtual Learning
Impedes Women Students’ Belonging in Engineering

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Although the effects of COVID-19 were felt by all students, the pandemic exacerbated the barriers to belonging for women in engineering. Little work to date has investigated women’s experiences during the pandemic in disciplines that are hallmarked by masculinity. What scholarship has been completed on pandemic-necessitated virtual instruction has not examined how women’s experiences and sense of belonging differed by the college year in which this disruption in their learning environment occurred. Utilizing data from seven focus groups conducted in March 2022 with 22 students, this study investigates how pandemic-induced virtual instruction is related to sense of belonging for women within their engineering majors. We found not only that the disruption caused by the pandemic had differential outcomes for students, but that these differences were mainly related to the year in which pandemic-induced virtual instruction occurred. This study highlights the importance of focusing on belonging and related issues as women transition into their major. We offer implications and recommendations for practice and research based on the differential outcomes found.

  • PeTe (Peer Teaching) Mentors: How Near Peer Mentoring (NPM) Affects
Academic Success and Retention in Design Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Near-Peer Mentoring (NPM) is an innovative form of Peer-assisted Learning that has been gaining traction in educational settings. Traditionally, NPM is characterized by a more experienced student (typically a year or more advanced) offering guidance and support to newer, less experienced students, with the aim of helping them navigate the complexities of their educational journey. This concept, however, has evolved to encompass a more inclusive and interdisciplinary approach, wherein students from different fields share their expertise, enhancing the learning experience for all involved. Research has shown that near-peer groups can significantly ease the stress associated with transitioning into higher education environments. Additionally, they play a crucial role in fostering cognitive and psychomotor development in students. The benefits of peer mentoring extend beyond academic development, contributing to a stronger sense of belonging to the educational institution, increasing student success and retention rates, and enhancing science identity and self-efficacy. In a practical application of this concept, a NPM program was implemented in an Interior Design undergraduate program at a southwestern university. The program was designed with several objectives improving student retention, reducing the workload of studio instructors, creating learning opportunities through near-peer interactions (such as workshops and brown bag sessions), and fostering a sense of belonging within the department. The outcomes of this initiative were encouraging, indicating that near-peer mentorship positively influenced students’ academic motivation, sense of belonging, and confidence in their abilities, skills, and knowledge pertaining to the college environment.

Academic Self-Efficacy in Community College: An Application of Direction
           Dependence Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Student persistence and retention in community colleges concern scholars, policymakers, and academics in higher education at large. Previous literature suggests that a strong sense of belonging in higher education and at the institution the student is attending may be one significant factor that impacts persistence and retention. However, belonging on campus in community college settings is complex given the nature of open enrollment, lack of on-campus housing, employment status of most students, and the limited amount of time students stay at the institution. Furthermore, previous correlational studies linking a sense of belonging and academic outcomes leave scholars wondering about causation without the science to support the inquiries. Standard statistical methods of association do not allow scholars to draw causal conclusions. Direction dependence analysis (DDA) provides a new way of statistically examining the causal directionality of relationships between constructs. The current study introduces principles of direction dependence modeling and examines the causal direction of the relationship between belonging and academic self-efficacy in a large community college setting. DDA results suggest that there is evidence to suggest a causal relationship between belonging and academic self-efficacy, a strong indication that belonging causes academic motivation rather than the other way around. Implications for higher education research and potential limitations of DDA are discussed.

  • Whiteness, Hierarchy, and Information Hoarding: Examining a University
Bias Response Process from the Frontline

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Striving antiracist frontline student affairs educators work from commitments to racial equity and racial justice. Yet, when responding to racist harms, they must navigate institutional investigative practices. In this institutional ethnographic study of a Predominantly and Historically White Institution (PHWI), despite frontline educators’ aims, responses resulted in limited change or adequate support for students harmed by racist incidents. Rather, investigative practices drew on white interpretations, emphasized individual responsibility, and excluded frontline educators from meaningful involvement. The findings of this study suggest that the social organization of who gets to be involved in institutional bias response processes may be racialized in ways that further harm both racially minoritized students and staff. However, the ways the educators in this study recognized the tensions and challenges in their work and actively worked to center students’ needs provide important insights for policies and practices that re-center the knowledge and aims of those at the frontline educators.

  • The Effect of Mindset Interventions on Stress and Academic Motivation in
           College Students

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Stress levels are high among college students in the United States. Growth mindset and stress-is-enhancing mindset interventions offer ways to reduce stress, but minimal research has examined them. This study’s aim was to examine the effect of mindset interventions on mindsets, stress, academic motivation, and responses to hypothetical academic scenarios. Participants included 210 college students who were randomized to one of four groups: growth mindset (intelligence is malleable), stress mindset (stress is beneficial), synergistic (intelligence is malleable, and stress is beneficial), or control (brain functions). The growth mindset and the synergistic mindset group increased in growth mindset, and the growth mindset group had higher growth mindset than the stress mindset and control group post-intervention. The stress mindset and the synergistic group increased in stress-is-enhancing mindset, and both groups had higher stress-is-enhancing mindsets than the growth mindset and control group post-intervention. All groups decreased in stress and increased in academic motivation. The synergistic group was the only group to improve on all the main outcomes, and students in this group were less likely to want to withdraw from a course in both negative hypothetical academic scenarios (if they failed an assignment or were faced with a professor with a fixed mindset). Our findings suggest that students would benefit from increased access to mindset interventions.

  • Does Industry Experience Influence Transferable Skills Instruction'
Implications for Faculty Development and Culture Theory

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract A major focus of innovation in higher education today is to improve faculty teaching, especially their focus on students’ career readiness and acquisition of workplace-relevant communication and teamwork competencies (i.e., transferable skills). Some contend that such instruction is best achieved through hiring faculty with prior work experience in industry, where the “culture” is preferable to academia where practical skills and career guidance are undervalued. However, little research exists on the topic and in this study we draw on person-centered views of culture to conceptualize industry experience as a form of cultural knowledge (i.e., cultural scripts) that can travel with a person (or not) over time and space. Using a mixed methods design where we gathered survey (n = 1,140) and interview (n = 89) data from STEMM faculty, we used thematic and HLM techniques to explore the relationships among industry experience, various situational factors, and transferable skills instruction. Results show that while most had industry experience (76.2%), transferable skills are rarely emphasized, a variety of individual (e.g., race) and institutional (e.g., discipline) factors are associated with transferable skills instruction, and that industry experience provides both generalized and specific cultural scripts for career- and skills-oriented teaching. We conclude that instead of promoting skills-focused instructional innovations via hiring policies that assume the value of one institutional culture over another, it is more useful and respectful (to faculty) to teach industry-based cultural knowledge via faculty development programming in a way similar to work-integrated learning (WIL) and communication in the disciplines (CID) initiatives.

  • Students’ Acceptance of ChatGPT in Higher Education: An Extended Unified
Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract AI-powered chat technology is an emerging topic worldwide, particularly in areas such as education, research, writing, publishing, and authorship. This study aims to explore the factors driving students' acceptance of ChatGPT in higher education. The study employs the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) theoretical model, with an extension of Personal innovativeness, to verify the Behavioral intention and Use behavior of ChatGPT by students. The study uses data from a sample of 503 Polish state university students. The PLS-SEM method is utilized to test the model. Results indicate that Habit has the most significant impact (0.339) on Behavioral intention, followed by Performance expectancy (0.260), and Hedonic motivation (0.187). Behavioral intention has the most significant effect (0.424) on Use behavior, followed by Habit (0.255) and Facilitating conditions (0.188). The model explains 72.8% of the Behavioral intention and 54.7% of the Use behavior variance. While the study is limited by the sample size and selection, it is expected to be a starting point for more research on ChatGPT-like technology in university education, given that this is a recently introduced technology.

  • Determinants of the Innovation Behaviour of Teachers in Higher Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The study examined what factors determine the use of educational innovations by teachers in higher education. Three sort of factors were compared: teachers’ motivation for the enhancement of education, their contact with or exposure to dissemination of educational innovations and institutional factors, that is, support provided by higher education institutions. Further, teachers were classified regarding their use of educational innovations. The study used survey data collected among academic staff at public Norwegian higher education institutions. Results of the multinominal logistic regression models showed that intrinsic motivation was an important factor for teachers' innovation behaviour in this context. Dissemination and institutional factors exerted little or no significant impact. The assumptions currently underlying research on educational innovations and the design of national and institutional support programmes are discussed against the background of these results.
