  • Who's Terrorizing Who'

Abstract: "I cannot undo what education did to you," she said, "how it makes people unaware why they are oppressed, of the causes in history, in the past, in the present.""So transnationalism is to work and to fight and to struggle for justice, freedom—transnationally."This issue coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the United States' initiation of the "war on terror" launched in the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001. On that day, al-Qaeda operatives destroyed the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan by flying two hijacked planes into the twin towers; a third hijacked plane hit the first floor of the Pentagon's west wall; and a fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers ... • To Forage

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: I go grocery shopping at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Well-acquainted with Black church services, I know the ease with which a 12:15 p.m. benediction can be pushed closer to 2:00 p.m. I arrive at my local Stop & Shop just in time to witness a procession of large hats and pastel cardigans, accompanied by the smells of lavender perfume and burnt hair. Slipping into this crowd ensures that my shopping trip will be saturated with the warmth that only older Black women can provide. Baby, do you have the time' Can you grab that sugar on the top shelf for me, darling' Now that's a pretty dress, honey. I respond in turn. Of course I can, ma'am; That lipstick looks gorgeous on your skin; That skirt is absolutely stunning. I slide ... Read More

  • Transnational Feminist Approaches to Anti-Muslim Racism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This special issue brings together feminist scholars to theorize anti-Muslim racism. It specifically attends to an understanding of anti-Muslim racism as transnational, proliferating, and linked to other racisms and projects of rule. Three key questions are addressed: How do we understand global circuits of power as they travel and shape local contexts in which anti-Muslim racism operates, including contexts in which Muslims are the majority' How is global anti-Muslim racism a gendered phenomenon' What is a revolutionary politics in which resistant forms of Muslimness imagine another world' With its emphasis on the transnational, the special issue assembles scholars whose work on the regional contexts of Turkey ... • Race, Gender, and Religion: Islamophobia and Beyond

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism as discourse is not new and cannot be reduced to a phobia.1 It is instead about a racial project of accumulation based on the idea of European superiority. Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism should be traced back to colonial modernity, its regimes of othering through racialism and racism, and its perception of Islam as a unified religious doctrine that conceals its nature as a fetishistic, primitive, barbaric, patriarchal, and irrational set of beliefs. The colonialist construction of Islam, along with other Indigenous religious practices—as an essentialized force that limits the cultural capacity of its adherents—was historically crucial to the formation of Whiteness ... • Transnational Anti-Muslim Racism: Routes in Law

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Bans or attempts to ban the niqab have traveled global circuits, leaving in their wake disastrous consequences for Muslim women who wear the face veil. Though these women are a minority in terms of their numbers, they have evoked in politicians and in the public, urged by politicians, a repugnance that insists on erasing them from public spaces. The repugnance they inspire requires that we pay close attention to the transnational routes of legalized anti-Muslim racism. An analysis of niqab bans reveals that: (1) a transnational proliferation of racist methods of regulating Muslim women's dress occurs through law; (2) they have been initiated by politicians to protect majoritarian values; (3) justifications for bans ...            through Social Media

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Toward the end of Barack Obama's second presidential term, a set of fairly widely circulating memes decrying the potential threat that "Shakira law"Figure 1Meme portraying DJ Khaled as a representative of "ISIS" working with Obama to implement "Shakira law" in the United States.would soon be implemented in the global north demonstrates some of the networked circuits through which anti-Muslim sentiments travel, their virality, and their metaphorical overlap with the notion of contagion. What seems to be the original meme is simply a photo of President Obama standing to the right of DJ Khaled; there are blue curtains and two American flags in the background. Overlaid on the photo is text that reads, "Here is a ... Read More

  • Four Editorials from Bint al-Nīl

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Doria Shafik1 was an Egyptian feminist, activist, scholar, poet, and novelist. She grew up in a traditional middle-class household in Mansura, and in 1915, at the age of seven, Shafik moved back to Tanta, where she was born, to live with her grandmother and attend the French missionary school Notre Dame des Apôtres (Nelson 1996: xxi–xxii). After that, she attended the "French mission school of St. Vincent de Paul, where she prepared for the elementary certificate known as the Brevet élémentaire" (Nelson 1996: 23). Shafik had a relentless desire to succeed, to be someone; therefore, she decided to take the French baccalaureate, known as the bachot. To study for the bachot, one had to attend the all-boys French lycée ... Read More

  • Between Orientalism and Anti-Muslim Racism: Pakistan, the United States,
and Women's Transnational Activism in the Early Cold War Interlude

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In November 1949, the teenager Mushfequa Rahman (later, Mahmud), then living in Chittagong in East Bengal, the eastern wing of Pakistan, reminisced about the August 1947 birth of Pakistan in an article in the magazine Begum. The veteran journalist Muhammad Nasiruddin had founded Begum mere weeks before partition and the independence of Pakistan and India, envisioning it as an illustrated Bengali-language weekly magazine devoted entirely to women's issues and concerns. Begum was still based in Calcutta in what was now the Indian state of West Bengal when Rahman published her piece, but in 1950 it would move to the East Bengali capital of Dacca, on the heels of many of its Muslim writers who emigrated to what they ... • The Entanglement of Secularism and Feminism in Pakistan

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: During the course of my ongoing research on women's struggles in Pakistan I was invited to give a talk at a major Islamic university for women whose stated mission is to promote Islamic knowledge while producing scholars who can contribute to the economic, social, political, and other development needs of Muslim societies.1 Since I had just completed a study involving women activists of a politico-religious movement, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), I thought it would be appropriate to speak about the struggles of Islamist women to this audience of mostly hijab- and niqab-wearing female students and teachers.2 In addition to the political, social, and religious activities of the Jamaat women, I mentioned that a key project of ... • Becoming "Black" and Muslim in Today's Russia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "I was coming out of the metro station, when two drunk men began to harass me by calling me chernaya ("black" in Russian). I pulled up my sleeve and said: 'Look, you idiots, I am whiter than you.' They continued to insult me, so I took out my pocketknife, inviting them to fight me. Cowards as [racists] often are, they retreated. I picked up my sports bag from the ground and proceeded to the minibus," Salihat, a Chechen woman in her mid-thirties, told me over tea at a small atelier, where three Muslim women made clothes for their clients and where Salihat and I met in the summer of 2019. She was a strong-built martial artist and a mother of four, with fierce light-brown eyes and an open smile. On the day of the ... Read More

  • How Hate Crime Laws Perpetuate Anti-Muslim Racism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On February 10, 2015, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Craig Stephen Hicks, a forty-six-year-old white car-parts salesman, murdered his neighbors, three Muslim American students: Deah Barakat (age twenty-three), his wife Yusor Abu-Salha (age twenty-one), and her sister Razan Abu-Salha (age nineteen). He shot each of them in the head. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) labeled the murders a parking dispute, not a hate crime, thus sparking a debate over the meaning of the latter. Hicks turned himself in and was charged with three counts of first-degree murder. His wife Karen insisted that the murders were not motivated by hatred, stating that her husband's actions were driven by "the longstanding parking ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: How do we express resistance as it exists in the Muslim world through a queer understanding' What does the Arab, Pakistani, and Iranian mujahideen, fedayeen, fighter, and revolutionary leader look like when read as femme or even simply homo/trans-welcoming instead of homo/trans-phobic' As an artist, curator, and poet it felt like a necessity and a duty to create this: a leader with contour paired with conviction, eyeshadowed with a sense of egalitarianism and wearing heels to stamp out heteropatriarchy, but make it Muslim.Four years ago this creature crept out of her crypt to deliver a vision to a weary crowd at San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, the very first performance in what was to become a queer Muslim ... • Queering Islam and Muslim Americanness: Perversity, Recognition, and
           Failure in Usama Alshaibi's Profane

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the United States' current cultural and political climate, stereotypes of Muslims are utterly familiar; they are ever present in mainstream media and politics. Muslim Americans often struggle to move past static images of destructive terrorists and oppressed women without a voice. Breaking outside of these stereotypes requires engaging with the binary between good and bad Muslim. Political scientist Mahmood Mamdani (2004: 15), who originated the terms "good Muslim" and "bad Muslim," places the outset of the binary at the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks (9/11):"Bad Muslims" were clearly responsible for terrorism "Good Mus- lims" were anxious to clear their names and consciences of this horrible crime [9/11] ... Abstract: In December 2019, in preparation for a TEDx talk (Naber 2019a), I reached out to my longtime comrade, Palestinian feminist Nada Elia, for advice on the content of my presentation. She asked me about my big idea. I hesitated before I said, "Arab feminism is not an oxymoron." She screamed, "What' We have been saying that since the nineties!" Indeed, Jo Kadi (1994) used this phrase in the introduction to the first anthology on Arab American feminisms. In the early 2000s, Amira Jarmakani (2011) used the concept of "invisibility" to describe Arab American feminism, and Lara Deeb (2018) has been addressing how scholars of the Middle East have been repeating a litany to colleagues, the public, and other feminists for at ...
