Abstract: Although the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014 led to a large US media interest in Syrian Kurds, the gender aspect of the battle between the Kurds and ISIS captured particular attention. The media visibility of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the all-female brigade of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), increased dramatically following the siege of Kobane in late 2014. Abstract: One sunny afternoon in May 2018 I was invited to participate in a research group meeting on spiritual care for transgender people, which took place at the beautiful Reed Hall House at the University of Exeter. Abstract: Despite their multifaceted participation and their suffering in many ways, women have been relatively neglected in scholarship about war and conflict, all the more so in the Middle East and North Africa. The guiding assumption that women are part of the home and private world and not active in the public world of politics and conflict, especially in the MENA area, has long exacerbated the ways in which women’s participation has been ignored. Abstract: Initiated by the late Michael W. Suleiman’s research and scholarly leadership, Arab American Women begins by acknowledging his role in its constitution. Suad Joseph writes in her preface that Suleiman asked her for two favors just days before his death in 2010: to organize a conference on Arab American studies and to complete the edited volume from another conference he had organized on Arab American women at Kansas State University the year before. With a red thread attached to a needle, the young artist sews a line onto a thick piece of cloth in front of her. The thick white cloth hangs between two tall trees by cords attached to its four corners. After sunset, it is illuminated by lights arranged high up on the trees’ branches. Abstract: Aaru (2022) is a photomontage series by the Egyptian photo artist Nermine Hammam (b. 1967). It uses the ancient Egyptian belief in the soul’s journey after death to Aaru, or paradise, as a guiding metaphor for a visceral, at times disturbing self-portrait. Taken together, the twenty-two images that make up this series plot Hammam’s descent from a state of “quiet” contemplation, and memories revisited, to an irresistible outpouring of anger and grief.
