Abstract: Since 2019 Joseph Vignone has served as the tireless managing editor for the Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies (JMEWS). Working with two editors in chief, an editorial team that comprises “Third Space” and review editors, and numerous authors, reviewers, and artists, as well as the production team at Duke University Press, Joe has performed this work with exemplary dedication, competence, and aplomb, and we are grateful. It is bittersweet that this is his last issue of nine as he transitions to a new role as assistant professor of history at Gonzaga University— the beginning of what we are certain will be an illustrious scholarly career. We would like to express our deep gratitude to Joe for his countless ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: Although the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014 led to a large US media interest in Syrian Kurds, the gender aspect of the battle between the Kurds and ISIS captured particular attention. The media visibility of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the all-female brigade of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), increased dramatically following the siege of Kobane in late 2014. Numerous news stories and reports about the YPJ circulated in the United States that praised the bravery and military prowess of Kurdish women fighters and portrayed them as new carriers of Western secular ideals in the Middle East against the radical Islamist agenda promoted by ISIS. This study critically analyzes media ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: One sunny afternoon in May 2018 I was invited to participate in a research group meeting on spiritual care for transgender people, which took place at the beautiful Reed Hall House at the University of Exeter. Experts with different backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences, including health care practitioners, scholars of religion and gender studies, spiritual health care chaplains, National Health Service (NHS) professionals, and, more important, transgender individuals, participated in that event. The meeting was part of an NHS project, “Modelling Transgender Spiritual Care: Spiritual Care for People Transitioning Gender,” run by Susannah Cornwall in partnership with the West of England NHS Specialist Gender ... Abstract: As the victors of World War I sat down at the Paris Peace Conference to determine the terms of defeat, and representatives of the former Ottoman provinces began traveling to Paris to make their case for national self-determination in January 1919, Najla Abillama published the first issue of al-Fajr (The Dawn), a monthly “women’s educational morality magazine,” in Beirut. Hope for the future defines the tone of this issue, with recent trauma framed as a crucible from which the next generation will emerge to lead the country (bilad) to its glorious future, while the end of Ottoman suzerainty is characterized as an opportunity for the people’s, the nation’s, and women’s reemergence (“Saʿadat al-nasl al-muqbil” [“The ... Abstract: Despite their multifaceted participation and their suffering in many ways, women have been relatively neglected in scholarship about war and conflict, all the more so in the Middle East and North Africa. The guiding assumption that women are part of the home and private world and not active in the public world of politics and conflict, especially in the MENA area, has long exacerbated the ways in which women’s participation has been ignored. Further, early anthropologists of the MENA region were men and talked with men in the field, who of course talked about their own worldviews and male activities. Women anthropologists going into the field during times of conflict and violence began to change the story. As a ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: Initiated by the late Michael W. Suleiman’s research and scholarly leadership, Arab American Women begins by acknowledging his role in its constitution. Suad Joseph writes in her preface that Suleiman asked her for two favors just days before his death in 2010: to organize a conference on Arab American studies and to complete the edited volume from another conference he had organized on Arab American women at Kansas State University the year before. In 2018 Joseph, joined by Louise Cainkar, completed the editing work Suleiman had begun and solicited new additions reflecting scholarly considerations since the 2009 conference. The challenges of putting together a volume of this scope while incorporating the wide ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: The tension between theory and practice, between knowing and doing, and between political philosophy and policy making is at the core of the intellectual debate among critical social scientists and political activists, generating questions of methodology, epistemology, ontology, ethics, and politics. By revealing the dialectic between gender and power within the theory-practice nexus to be constitutive of these problematics, feminist scholarship has transformed the disciplines it has engaged— at its most powerful fusing theory and practice into self-reflexive, theoretically informed praxis; in other words, a practice of theorizing that has a direct impact on the issues, subjects, and areas it studies. Transcending ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: The patterns that adorn the carpets carry within them people’s memory. In Kurdish lands also, carpets are an important means of expression. The women get together and, while singing, tell their stories on their looms, thread after thread, with their fingertips. . . .Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey, stands on part of the Kurdish lands, which were divided like a pie in four, a hundred years ago, between Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey. I was born there.Stories lurk on each of the historical streets that crisscross Mardin and turn it into a labyrinth— my town with the ocher atmosphere. Armenians, Arabs, Syriacs, Chaldeans, Mahallamis, Kurds: in this town we have all lived together for centuries. At times the ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: In the center of Baghdad’s Zawraa Park, Roze Muhammed begins her performance. With a red thread attached to a needle, the young artist sews a line onto a thick piece of cloth in front of her. The thick white cloth hangs between two tall trees by cords attached to its four corners. After sunset, it is illuminated by lights arranged high up on the trees’ branches. Roze and members of the audience walk around its two sides. As Roze stands on one side of the cloth and begins to push the red thread through it, the audience follows her hands and the needle, trying to understand what to do with the hanging cloth. They interrogate Roze with inquisitive glances, eager to know what her artwork is about. She invites them to ... Read More PubDate: 2023-01-18T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: Aaru (2022) is a photomontage series by the Egyptian photo artist Nermine Hammam (b. 1967). It uses the ancient Egyptian belief in the soul’s journey after death to Aaru, or paradise, as a guiding metaphor for a visceral, at times disturbing self-portrait. Taken together, the twenty-two images that make up this series plot Hammam’s descent from a state of “quiet” contemplation, and memories revisited, to an irresistible outpouring of anger and grief. Aaru is a work about a father, now deceased, and about masculinity, or, more precisely, that excess of masculine energy that tips “the world off its center” and has shaped the artist’s life in significant ways.1 Aaru captures both “a state of mourning and an act of ...
