  • Life and death of Poland’s landscape – are we living in landscape
           “hell”'

    • Authors: Mariusz Kistowski
      Pages: 1 - 12
Abstract: The author’s thesis assumes that the degree of landscape degradation in many parts of Poland is so high that the use of the term “landscape hell” is justified. This denotes such a state of visual and aesthetic, structural and functional landscape degradation that leads or has already led to the landscape’s death. This condition existed in many areas during the communist period, but now, 34 years after the political transformation and eight years of the development of the “mafia” state, it is also occurring with increasing frequency. Its origin lies in the attitude of some politicians and the public towards space and nature as resources that can be exploited to an extreme extent and that must be subordinated to people. This is due, among others, to the Poles’ civilizational lag in relation to many other nations, Polish society’s developmental history, and the recurring compensation for economic shortcomings. In the first quarter-century of transformation, the development of consumption, the dominance of economic development criteria, and the politicians’ ignorance and bias have introduced phenomena such as strip farm urbanisation, “concreteosis”, architectural “gigantomania”, “urban blight”, “railingeosis”, and “advertosis” into the landscape. After 2015, the above have been overlaid by the landscape-eroding activities of the representatives of the “mafia” state, resulting from, among others, excessive deforestation and tree clearing in open and urban areas, continued operation of the coal-based energy sector, including open-cast mines, river diversions, construction of hydro-technical facilities, mass legalisation of arbitrary construction, and transport infrastructure planning. The various recommendations on landscape conservation, formulated for many years, have, for the most part, not been implemented, despite Poland’s ratification of the European Landscape Convention. We can thus gradually kill off more landscape, which will continue to linger in our memories and documents for some time, until eventually, virtual reality becomes the main way of admiring it.

  • International scientific cooperation: the case of the Economic and Social
           Development (ESD) conference

    • Authors: Tomasz Studzieniecki
      Pages: 13 - 25
Abstract: The article analyses scientific conferences as an instrument of international cooperation. The aim is to identify the characteristics and factors influencing the growth of the international scientific conferences. Specifically, it presents the concept and model of the Economic and Social Development (ESD) conference and examines scientific cooperation within this conference between 2012 and 2022. The article draws on data sourced from the ESD conference organiser and the Web of Science database. Between 2012 and 2022, a total of 92 conferences were held across six continents in 26 countries. The WoS database indexed 1,465 articles authored by individuals from 91 countries. The lengthy waiting times for conferences to be indexed in the WoS database have led organisers to seek out additional benefits for participants.

  • Identification of the social economic and environmental context of the

    • Authors: Stabak Roy, Lidia Nazarkiv, Tetiana Markulchak, Grażyna Chaberek
      Pages: 26 - 39
Abstract: The main intent of the study is to investigate the conceptual framework of sustainability associated with the social, economic, and environmental context of the city of Ternopil, Ukraine. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses have been used to better understand the conceptual threshold area of sustainability. Geospatial approaches are used to measure the city’s sustainability. The results indicate that Ternopil city’s socio-economic context moderately supports sustainability, while the environmental context is less supportive. The study found that the city’s economic growth and development have caused environmental degradation, leading to the loss of biodiversity and natural resources. However, the study revealed that the city is adopting sustainable practices. The city’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) have been analysed in light of sustainability. The study recommends that policymakers and stakeholders in Ternopil City should prioritise sustainable development practices, such as implementing public transport and promoting sustainable urban planning. Overall, the study provides insights into the relationship between socioeconomic and environmental factors and sustainability in Ternopil City and highlights the need for sustainable development practices to ensure a sustainable future for the city.

  • System of hydrographic terms of the Zhambyl region

    • Authors: Kuat Tabyldinovich Saparov, Zhanna Radievna Shakhantayeva, Aigul Yessengalievna Yeginbayeva
      Pages: 40 - 48
Abstract: The article analyzes scientific approaches to the grouping of toponyms according to the geographical principles based on the materials of the Zhambyl region and comprehensively examines hydrographic terms. The importance of the study is due to insufficient work on the hydronymy of the Zhambyl region and the need to develop this direction in Kazakh science. The aim of the study is to group the hydronyms of the Zhambyl region based on geographical principles. The study used cartographic, statistical and GIS methods. Whilst analyzing hydrographic objects, 177 names of rivers were identified which were formed with the participation of indicator terms related to rivers. They were classified and grouped into the most common terms in the names of rivers such as the term sai 57%, the term su 25% and the term ozek 16%.

  • Advertising in the urban landscape as a theme for educational activities
based on the example of field practice in Pabianice

    • Authors: Edyta Masierek
      Pages: 49 - 57
Abstract: The article describes possible practical educational activities aimed at respecting the landscape, in particular the cultural landscape, in which various types of advertisements appear in an uncontrolled form. The presented considerations are based on a field practice conducted in 2018 with students of spatial management, during which advertisements on the main street of Pabianice were inventoried. The collected material, conclusions, and recommendations serve as a starting point for a broader discussion on the advertising chaos in the city.
