Abstract: Although the West has often viewed itself as spearheading modernity and universal values through the vast movement of the Enlightenment, many of its peoples now seem to be turning their backs on the idea of progress as an antiquated 20th-centuries notion. Instead, this notion seems now to evoke a time when social and technical progress was associated with intellectual and even psychological fulfillment on the one hand, with equal opportunities for upward social mobility and integration of working classes and ethnic minorities on the other hand, with advancements in civic rights, democracy, and full citizenship finally. - Citizenship with variable geography

Abstract: This contribution focuses on the persistence of territorial inequalities in many dimensions of people’s quality of life as a peculiar aspect of the civilisation-decivilisation process in today’s Italy. Emphasis is given to the relevance of beyond-GDP North-South divide which often encroaches on the sphere of citizenship rights in terms of the degree to which the population enjoys essential public services. This paper provides evidence that internal disparities are often wider and more persistent in Italy than in other European countries. It is made clear that, albeit territorial divergences have undoubtedly worsened as a result of the exogenous shocks of recent years, as regards Italy, the intensification of within-country inequalities has been influenced by both selective and restrictive policies, on one hand, and the particular structure of the Italian welfare system, on the other: the former have hit the weakest and most public-spending-dependent southern regions hardest, while t...

Covid-19 e controversie tecnoscientifiche: tra STS ed Elias La pandemia da Covid-19 è probabilmente l’evento più straordinario e sconvolgente con cui l’umanità è costretta a confrontarsi, quantomeno dal Secondo dopoguerra in poi. Il complesso di eventi, decisioni e interpretazioni che si susseguono senza sosta dai primi mesi del 2020 (quando è stato chiaro che l’emergenza sanitaria, sociale ed economica non era circoscritta alla sola Cina) interpella pressoché ogni campo del sapere, in modi, peraltro, al momento non pienamente decifrabili. - Moving away from civilization: the case of Italy. An overview and
presentation

Abstract: For decades, Italian social life has been witnessing a series of episodes of civil decay such as widespread illegality, environmental mismanagement, corruption, violence against women, the elderly and minors, questioning of scientific results and mistrust of professional abilities, online hate, and anti-vaccination movements. Although some of these social phenomena are not restricted to Italy, their spread and pervasiveness in this country are linked to other typically national traits.
To answer the question of whether Italy is a country with a limited degree of civilization, we start from Norbert Elias’s concept of the “civilizing process”. We first distinguish between civilization and decivilization and define them. We then identify selected types of violence and aggression as an expression of the decivilizing process and as evidence of a widespread regression in social life. Lastly, we relate today’s decivilizing processes with the historical roots of Italian backwardness.

Abstract: Il 7 settembre 2022 è mancata Magda Talamo, una protagonista della rinascita nel dopoguerra della sociologia in Italia. Dopo essere stata ricercatrice al CNRS a Parigi e aver insegnato all’Università di Catania, è stata a lungo ordinaria di Sociologia all’Università di Torino. Qui desideriamo ricordarla con le sue stesse parole, scritte in una lettera inviata nel 2002 a Franco Ferrarotti, con le quali rende la sua diretta partecipe testimonianza della creazione, ad avvio anni Cinquanta, dei «Quaderni di Sociologia». Caro Franco, le cose che ricordo intorno alla tua idea di dare vita ad una rivista di Sociologia (che avrebbe poi dovuto essere i Quaderni) sono poche, discontinue e forse te le ho già dette a Torino al Congresso per Abbagnano. Io ti ho conosciuto nel bar di fronte a Palazzo Campana. Abstract: Do Italy and Israel attest progressive de-civilizing phenomena in light of erosion in political stability and institutional paradigms' What are the differences between Italian and Israeli imperfect statehoods, revealing fluctuant tendencies in democratic civilizing and de-civilizing processes' Despite historical, political and sociological differences, both Italian and Israeli democracies have shown signs of political unrest and segmentation. The interaction between state and citizenry, anchored to national we- feelings, transformed the two countries into nation-state-based democratic republics which remain susceptible to instability, maybe even to disintegration, due to lasting sociopolitical and socio-cultural cleavages. - Why it is not a shame to evade tax in Italy

Abstract: Tax evasion is a long-standing problem in Italy. It places Italy in an anomalous condition in comparison to advanced countries. Although the issue is considered serious by the majority of the population, it is socially tolerated.
This paper is divided into three sections. The first one outlines the profile of fiscal sociology and the image of the taxpayer according to the literature. The second section focuses on tax evasion in quantitative terms and gives a picture of the actors. The third section refers to the Elias’ concepts of shame, civilization and decivilization in order to answer the question posed by this article.
The assumption here is that the lack of (sense of) shame in tax evasion in Italy is indicator of decivilization (or lack of civilization). This behaviour is the result of a low awareness of citizenship and poor social cohesion.

- La socializzazione al genere nelle famiglie italiane: figurazioni e

Abstract: Introduzione Il processo di civilizzazione descritto da Elias (1994) va considerato come un movimento non lineare che può prendere direzioni imprevedibili e a volte anche contraddittorie. Nel descrivere questo processo, Elias si sofferma su come questo abbia trasformato anche le relazioni intra-familiari, comportando una minore legittimità e un progressivo abbandono dell’utilizzo della violenza del pater familias tanto sui figli quanto sulla moglie, aprendo la strada a un cambiamento anche nelle relazioni fra generi (Elias, 1982). Secondo Bucholc (2011), la prospettiva eliasiana può essere usata per leggere i rapporti fra generi; tuttavia, l’autrice ritiene anche che il processo di civilizzazione non abbia portato ad un cambiamento a livello figurazionale nelle relazioni tra uomini e donne, ma solo a livello simbolico. Abstract: Il libro di Borgna – conciso ma denso – offre “una prospettiva comparata sui successi e i fallimenti dei vari sistemi scolastici europei nell’integrazione degli studenti stranieri” e mette in evidenza i fattori che intralciano l’eguaglianza delle opportunità in ambito formativo per gli studenti di origine immigrata. Si stima che l’8% della popolazione europea di 0-15enni sia straniera, cui si aggiunge una quota di minori di origine immigrata (di dimensioni più difficili da conoscere) dotati della cittadinanza del paese in cui vivono; oltre a costituire un gruppo di dimensioni consistenti, i figli di immigrati sono destinati ad avere un peso crescente nella futura popolazione scolastica e dunque a continuare a porre sfide ai sistemi formativi.
