  • Internet of things protocols - a survey

Authors: Venetis Kanakaris, George A. Papakostas
      Pages: 101 - 117
Abstract: Several IoT protocols have been introduced to provide an efficient communication for resource-constrained applications. While developers employ existing technologies to build the IoT, research groups are working on adapting protocols to the IoT in order to optimise communications. To address this issue, we evaluated and compared several communication protocols, namely, MQTT, SMQTT, AMQP, CoAP, XMPP, DDS, RESTful and WebSocket and we discuss their suitability of the IoT protocols by considering architecture, security, message techniques and QoS aspects. Lastly, we provide our conclusions for the IoT communication protocols according to the study that we have conducted.

  • Use of mHealth for cardiovascular disease in low- and middle-income
countries with low peace: systematic review and recommendations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Cynthia Williams, Yara M. Asi
      Pages: 118 - 130
Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally, with a disproportionately high rate in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Humanitarian agencies should seek innovative methods to alleviate CVD. The goal of this paper is to review evidence on the effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) as a means for CVD care in fragile environments. A systematic method using PRISMA standards was conducted using three bibliographic databases. Descriptive analysis was applied, and a quality assessment was conducted using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, Cochrane qualitative appraisal tool, and Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment. The databases yielded 2,732 citations after duplicates were removed, with 111 suitable for detailed screening based on our criteria. Six met the inclusion criteria: three randomised control trials, two qualitative studies, and one cohort study. There is potential to improve patient health using mHealth as an adjunct to CVD care.

  • A decentralised framework for efficient storage and processing of big data
           using HDFS and IPFS

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Franklin John, Suji Gopinath, Elizabeth Sherly
      Pages: 131 - 143
Abstract: Big data revolution emerged with greater opportunities as well as challenges. Some of the major challenges include capturing, storing, transferring, analysing, processing and updating these large and complex datasets. Traditional data handling techniques cannot manage this fast growing data. Apache Hadoop is one of the best technologies which can address the challenges involved in big data handling. Hadoop is a centralised, distributed data storage model. InterPlanetary file system (IPFS) is an emerging technology which can provide a decentralised distributed storage. By integrating both these technologies, we can create a better framework for the distributed storage and processing of big data. In the proposed work, we formulated a model for big data placement, replication and processing by combining the features of Hadoop and IPFS. Hadoop distributed file system and IPFS jointly handle the data placement and replication tasks and the programming framework MapReduce in Hadoop handle the data processing task. The experimental result shows that the proposed framework can achieve cost-effective storage as well as faster processing of big data.

  • Effective models for predicting Gaokao scores and selecting universities
for college admissions in mainland China

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Hao Zhang, Shan Lu, Jie Wang
      Pages: 144 - 171
Abstract: Students in mainland China would need to predict the admission Gaokao score for a major of a university to increase their chances of acceptance to a best-suited major and a university. Early prediction methods are empirical without the backing of in-depth data studies. We fill this void by presenting well-tested mathematical models, based on the ranking of Gaokao scores in a provincial administrative region. In addition, we devise a recommendation model that uses general morphological analysis to help students explore universities and majors that match their abilities and interests, and a baseline recommendation index for scoring each choice. We use the technique for order preference by similarity to find the best university tailored to every applicant. We show that our prediction methods significantly outperform the methods commonly used by teachers and experts and can predict admission scores with an accuracy of up to 94.7%. We then present case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of our recommendation model.

  • AsthaNet: co-creating network solution for socio-economic development of
           disconnected communities

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: K. Habibul Kabir, Ashraful Alam Khan, Ashir Ahmed, Masahiro Sasabe, Khondaker Hasibul Kabir
      Pages: 172 - 209
Abstract: We co-create networking solutions, called <i>AsthaNet</i>, to connect disconnected rural communities with global resources. <i>AsthaNet</i> combines a bundle of modern technologies, e.g., variant of ferry-assisted-delay tolerant network (DTN) with TCP/IP, content delivery network (CDN), disconnected internet of things (IoT), etc. <i>AsthaNet</i> provides autonomous solutions to serve information demand, which re-invents networking among rural communities (especially technically-less sound people) to enjoy quality localised contents with different dialects/accents. For socio-economic development of these communities through humanitarian technology, <i>AsthaNet</i> adopts the concepts of people's empowerment of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, and people's development as freedom of Amartya Sen. As a result of this humanitarian technology-based development, <i>AsthaNet</i> becomes the perfect blend of knowledge society to connect the disconnected rural communities to develop with freedom to empower.
