  • On the Association between Parenthood, Number of Children and Expectations
           of Old-Age Welfare

    • Authors: Tomass Kristian Nielsen
Abstract: This paper explores the association between having children and expected subjective old-age welfare within a European context. Data for 31 countries from the European Social Survey are used to model the respondents’ concern about their expected old-age well-being and welfare. Having children and the number of children are the primary explanatory variables but a broad set of controls including gender, age, education level, household income and health, as well as others are included. Regional variation in this association within Europe is discussed using four larger groups of countries. The results indicate that those with a higher number of children report that they are less worried about old-age welfare compared to those who have fewer children. In general, those without children had lower concerns regarding their old-age than those with children.

  • Trends in Living Arrangements for Older Persons in Estonia Compared to
           Belgium

    • Authors: Anne Herm, Michel Poulain
Abstract: The proportion of older people is increasing. During the years lived with disease and functional mobility loss, ensuring their well-being becomes a challenge for society. In addition to health, well-being in old age depends on various circumstances of an individual’s personal life. While contact with family members from a distance or irregular contact may be sufficient for satisfying the need for communication and may alleviate loneliness, it cannot replace the assistance that being present can provide. The difficulties or disadvantages are associated with some types of living arrangements. Therefore, patterns of living arrangements for older people are of key importance in studies of their well-being.The demographic characteristics vary by country but differences are expected to be less  between societies experiencing a similar path in development. Since the last decade of the 20th century, rapid changes have brought Eastern Europe closer to the more developed areas of Europe, both in economic and social terms. The patterns of living arrangements for older people in Estonia compared to people of similar age in Belgium show some signs of convergence, the latter being considered representative of Western Europe. The studied period for Estonia includes the transition period from the Soviet regime to the current situation. Accordingly, we address the question of whether this transition accounts for some specific features in Estonia, compared with Belgian trends. We find rather different patterns in the distribution of older people’s living arrangements in the two countries but similar trends in the changes indicating convergence between the two countries.

  • Transition of Urban Neighbourhoods: Case of Nagpur, India

    • Authors: Sarika Bahadure, Tanushri Kamble
Abstract: Change is inevitable, but how this change affects the user, decides its success. Neighbourhoods are the heart of a city and transition in a neighbourhood reflects the city’s transition. This study seeks to: 1) Understand the transition of the city Nagpur, India. It shows the transition that the city underwent using various maps as evidence. The exploration of the transition from the past to the present helped in understanding the morphology of the place. 2) Investigate six neighbourhoods from different parts of the city established at different times. Therefore, the neighbourhoods are selected based on their existence in a certain time frame. 3) Explore the residents’ satisfaction by mapping the amenities and their opinion about the neighbourhood. The results show how the transition of a city takes place with changes in the administration and the needs of the people. The study provides a methodology for investigating the transition of neighbourhoods over a given period to the present. It also functions as a guide on factors that affect the transition of a neighbourhood. The socio-spatial exploration will guide the stakeholder through decision-making in urban planning.
