- FAR-RIGHT ACTIVISM ON CROATIAN MAINSTREAM NEWS PORTALS: CONTRIBUTING TO
(AND CHANGING) THE PUBLIC DEBATE ON THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC Authors: Martina Topic, Marija Geiger Zeman, Zdenko Zeman, Mirela Holy Pages: 113 - 134 Abstract: This paper analyses online user comments on two mainstream Croatian portals, Index.hr and 24sata.hr regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, global conspiracies, and fake news in the context of decreasing media trust. Three-tier coding was conducted on 12.910 comments (2.194 from the portal 24 sata and 10.716 from the portal index.hr) and a thematic analysis was carried out. The findings showed that the main themes capture global conspiracy theories, including fascism as one of the main themes, as well as a lack of belief in the reality of the pandemic and negative views of the mainstream media seen as intertwined with the Government and as promoting one-sided views. Since the findings were unexpected, particularly regarding the extensive criticism of the media, and due to a large amount of conspiracy-related content on two portals neither of which is normally associated with the far right, an abductive analysis was conducted. The results revealed that the majority of content in the user comments regarding fascism and slavery as features of the COVID-19 policy in Croatia was posted either by a far-right political party (on Index.hr) or two unidentified users (on 24sata.hr) (likely far-right activists), and in both cases, comments were copy-pasted, including grammar mistakes. This signals an attempt of the far right in Croatia to not just contribute to but also manipulate public opinion and debates as well as give a false impression to an inattentive reader of the views of the Croatian public regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. - UNDERSTANDING TEACHER LEADERSHIP IN THE LIGHT OF SOME SOCIOLOGICAL
PARADIGMS Authors: Dragana Jovanović, Jelena Jovanović Pages: 135 - 148 Abstract: The field of effective teaching is not only significant but also unique in relation to the demands placed before it and the issues it faces along the way. It can be said that adequate, positive leadership is the answer to the demands and a promising solution in reducing the issues and challenges of the current reform. Although researchers and practitioners have emphasized the importance of leadership in education, teacher leadership is a field that has started to be "in the spotlight" only in the last few years and is a topic that has not been sufficiently researched. For the purposes of adequate affirmation and understanding of the nature and essence of teacher leadership as seen by the author of this paper and the leading authors in this field, it is necessary to make a brief review of the foundations of its origin, that is, different theoretical perspectives of looking at leadership in education in general. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review and analyze two significant and at the same time quite influential sociological paradigms of leadership in education (structural-functionalist and constructivist) which further reflect on the shaping and development of teacher leadership.Key words: paradigm, education, leadership, structural functionalism, constructivism PubDate: 2022-12-15 DOI: 10.22190/FUPSPH2203135J
- PEER VIOLENCE: RECOGNITION, UNDERSTANDING AND RESPONSE FROM THE ATTACHMENT
THEORY PERSPECTIVE Authors: Milica Tošić Radev, Ivana Janković Pages: 149 - 164 Abstract: Violence in schools is one of the biggest problems faced by children, parents, schools, and society as a whole. The causes of violence are multiple, and the consequences numerous, so it is difficult, and at the same time very important, to find potential strategies to prevent and handle this problem. One of the solutions for prevention and treatment can be derived by the application of the attachment theory, which represents a useful theoretical framework for recognizing and understanding the development of violent behavior, and for dealing with it more effectively. The paper will show how some of the important antecedents of peer violence are formed in the context of early interaction with the primary caregiver. The paper summarizes the research indicating that children with a secure pattern of attachment commit peer violence less often, while children with an avoidant and disorganized attachment pattern are the most common in the group of children who behave aggressively and violently towards others. The negative model of others and the underdevelopment of the capacity for mentalization, as a consequence of rejecting caregiving or mothering in which the mother is perceived as fearful and helpless, are key in understanding the inadequate, often reactive and defensive problematic behaviors of these children. The paper will represent the point of view that in the process of preventing peer violence, a positive, sensitive and empathetic relationship that develops between teachers and students is of great importance, and that a teacher’s capacity for mentalizing is an important segment for developing mentalizing in children. - THE MENTAL HEALTH OF PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
IN CENTRAL SERBIA AND KOSOVO AND METOHIJA Authors: Senka Kostić, Nataša Nikolić, Jelena Petrović, Katarina Denić, Tijana Lazić Pages: 165 - 177 Abstract: Parenting brings many challenges, especially if there is a child with developmental disabilities in the family. With this in mind, we designed a study aimed at examining the differences in the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among parents of children with and without developmental disabilities who live in Kosovo and Metohija and central Serbia. The study involved 215 families, 108 families from Kosovo and Metohija (53 families are families with children with disabilities, while 55 families have children without developmental disabilities) and 107 families (51 families are families with children with some form of developmental disability, while 56 families have children without developmental disabilities) from central Serbia. Both parents completed the DASS-21 scale. For data analysis we used the Paired Samples t-Test and two-factor multivariate analysis of variance. The results indicate that mothers generally show higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress than fathers. In addition, the results show that parents of children with disabilities living in central Serbia show higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress than parents of children with disabilities in Kosovo and Metohija. Regarding the differences between parents with/without a child with developmental disabilities, the results indicate that fathers of children with developmental disabilities who live in the area of Kosovo and Metohija show lower levels of depression and anxiety compared to fathers of children with developmental disabilities who live in central Serbia; while fathers of children who do not have developmental disabilities show the same level of depression and anxiety, regardless of their place of residence. The results also show that fathers living in central Serbia are generally more stressed than fathers living in Kosovo and Metohija. On the other hand, mothers of children with developmental disabilities who live in the area of Kosovo and Metohija show a lower level of depression and stress compared to mothers of children with developmental disabilities who live in central Serbia; while mothers of children who do not have developmental disabilities show the same level of depression and stress regardless of their place of residence. In addition, mothers living in central Serbia show a higher level of anxiety compared to mothers living in the area of Kosovo and Metohija. The obtained findings only partly confirm the set hypothesis. PubDate: 2022-12-15 DOI: 10.22190/FUPSPH2203165K
- SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AS DETERMINANTS OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Authors: Marina Ćirić Pages: 179 - 189 Abstract: The main goal of the research was to examine the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics (gender, economic status, parents’ education level) and student engagement. Character of engagement was shown through NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement Indicators, 2018) and encompasses academic challenge (higher-order learning, reflective and integrative learning, learning strategies, quantitative reasoning), learning with peers (collaborative learning, discussions with diverse others), experiences with faculty (student-faculty interaction, effective teaching practices), campus environment (quality of interactions, supportive environment). Since this research was based on the NSSE conceptual framework, information about student attitude towards the quality of studying and personal engagement was collected through the adapted questionnaire. The research sample consisted of 515 students are studying at the University of Niš. The results indicate that engagement was more pronounced among female students, students of poorer economic status, and students whose parents had a lower level of education.
