  • Adult learning and education in Portugal and the EU: sociological
relevance, conceptual challenges, and research results

    • Authors: Patrícia Ávila
Abstract: This article focuses on research on the participation of adult population in learning and education activities. It discusses and synthesises the main analytical perspectives, methodological approaches and research results, situating in a comparative and temporally extended perspective, the evolution that has occurred in Portugal in this field. It points to the major social inequalities associated with lifelong learning and to the complexity and multiplicity of the factors that condition or favour participation, emphasising the centrality of public policies. The article also discusses the social implications of these processes for both individuals and societies, and argues for the need to strengthen the sociological research in this domain.

  • Tensions and reconfigurations in higher education: the neoliberal Chilean

    • Authors: Maria Luisa Quaresma
Abstract: This paper aims to present a theoretical discussion about the university reconfiguration, and its massification and marketisation, taking as example Chile, one of the most highly marketized countries in the world. It discusses the challenges of a massification anchored in privatisation and segregation and also the Chilean student movements against the market-oriented educational system. With the discussion about the Chilean educational model implemented by the real neoliberalism over the last 40 years we intend to bring a proficuous contribution to the national debate in countries where the market ideology winds are blowing more strongly.

  • A historical analysis of the Portuguese child protection system: what
           lessons for the future'

    • Authors: José Castro, Jorge Manuel Leitão Ferreira, Luís Capucha
Abstract: This article analyses the history of the Portuguese Child Protection System (CPS), mainly his relation with the Welfare State development, the affirmation of local power and the evolution of the social protection system that led to the approval of the Law of Protection of Children and Youth in Danger, in 1999. Considering the CPS history lessons and some significative trends of evolution of protection systems, at an international level, we analyze the present situation of the system, from dimensions like the general orientation, the system organization, and the workforce, to envision its future.

  • Continuity and change in the recruitment: Portuguese administrative elite,

    • Authors: Filipe Nunes
Abstract: Over the past two decades, the pattern of recruitment of top officials has undergone some changes. Today we have a greater presence of women in the administrative elite and an acceleration of the aging trend, a strengthening of skills in public management and even a greater diversity of geographic and university backgrounds. At the same time, there are certain legacies from the past that persist: the presence of lawyers and the Lisbon Faculty of Law; the difficult access of women to the top of Ministries of Foreign and Home Affairs, or Defence; as well as the presence of professors in the administrative elite; the relative importance of being born, studying or living in the capital.

  • Acculturation and intergenerational: case studies of relations in families
           of Chinese immigrants in Portugal

    • Authors: Yangmin Jin, Eloy Gómez-Pellón
Abstract: This article aims to examine the cultural changes and intergenerational conflicts within the families of Chinese immigrants who have arrived in Portugal since the 1990s. For these purposes, we have applied a case study to five immigrant families from the Zhejiang province of China. It is concluded that parents and children acculturate at different levels in Portuguese society, resulting in an “acculturation gap”. However, it is observed that conflicts between parents and children, which harm family cohesion, and complex intergenerational relationships are not only effects of this acculturation gap but are also related to the immigrants’ life trajectories.

  • Work-life balance in high-pressure professions: the case of nurses, police
           officers and journalists

    • Authors: Catarina Egreja, Sara Melo
Abstract: This paper addresses the issue of work-life balance based on data from a sociological study carried out in Portugal among three professional groups under high pressure to perform — nurses, police officers and journalists — based on a mixed-methods approach. The results elucidate how some characteristics of the nature of work (namely the working hours, the pace of work and the level of demand of the activity) have an impact on time management, sleep and conciliation with private/family life. The main conclusion is that there is prevalence of a totalizing nature of work.

  • Modes of relating to retirement

    • Authors: Bruno Rebelo
Abstract: The centrality of work and the increase in human longevity are both playing a role in the significant importance that retirement is acquiring in people’s daily lives. This article uses a qualitative study based on biographical interviews to discuss the process of relating to retirement. The results show that the heterogeneity of life courses influences the ways in which individuals relate to retirement. Notwithstanding the individual diversity of this process are presented four profile-types, constructed from analytical dimensions, denominated: relational, reserved, conditioned, and instrumental.
