  • The Empiricist's New Clothes: David Hume and the Theft of Philosophy

Abstract: If Objectivists are ever going to convince people to let go of their psychological codependency on God, along with His emotionalist ethical stepchild, altruism, one thing we will most certainly need to do is demonstrate beyond all reasonable doubt that they can and should have complete confidence in the power of the human mind—their own minds—indeed, a lot more confidence than traditional philosophy has typically been willing to grant. Here is one perspective from a recent study of the Enlightenment:The traditional Western conception of human liberty, stretching from ancient Greece through Renaissance Italy to Enlightenment France, has given pride of place to reason. Once we climb this "high tower of the mind" ... Read More

  • Glimpses of the Mystical Dimension of Ayn Rand's Thought

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: I Am That I Am.Know Thyself—and You Will Know God.I am the Way, the Truth and the Light. This Self is nearer than all else; dearer than son, dearer than wealth, dearer than anything. If a man call anything dearer than Self, say that he will lose what is dear, of a certainty he will lose it; for Self is God. Therefore, one should worship Self as Love. Who worships Self as Love, his love never shall perish. If he loves a stone, he is a stone; if he loves a man, he is a man; if he loves God—I dare not say more, for if I said that he would then be God, ye might stone me.Man is placed above all creatures, and not beneath them, and he cannot be satisfied or content except in something greater than himself. Greater than ... Read More

  • Should "The Metaphysics of Man" Be a Sixth Branch of Objectivist
           Philosophy'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this essay, I propose to elevate the theory of the fundamental nature of man (more widely referred to as philosophical anthropology) from a theory in "Standard" Objectivism to a new, sixth branch of what would become Revised Objectivism. (By "Standard Objectivism," I mean simply Objectivism as it was originated by Ayn Rand and what is now accepted by Leonard Peikoff and Rand's orthodox followers. By "Revised Objectivism," I mean Objectivism as I propose to change it and hopefully improve it in certain ways.)This new branch of Objectivist philosophy would be distinct from both the metaphysics of reality (more generally called ontology) and epistemology. Consolidating all the axioms about the fundamental nature of ... Read More
