  • Corporate Social Performance and Firm Location - An Empirical Evidence

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The study addresses the relationship between firm location and the Corporate Social performance (CSP) of manufacturing enterprises in India. The study argues that a higher number of Multinational corporations (MNCs) at a location lead to higher social performance. An Environment and Social Involvement (ESI) index, based on ISO26000 and National Voluntary Guidelines, has been used to measure the Corporate Social performance of manufacturing enterprises. The data is obtained through questionnaires from a survey of 121 medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in the national capital region in India and analyzed through one-way ANOVA and regression analysis. Results reveal that the presence of MNCs at the location of enterprises is significant to their CSP. The findings of the study aggregate to make original and substantive contributions to the CSP literature on the geography of strategic management. This research is valuable for social responsibility practitioners in developing countries for small and medium enterprises seeking to enhance their understanding of CSP.

Abstract: Clean energy is currently a top priority on the global agenda, and green bonds have emerged as a key response from financial markets. However, while these bonds aim to reduce carbon emissions, they may create perverse incentives. Brazil has made significant investments in eolic parks in recent years, with players issuing green bonds to finance these activities. One region that has seen high levels of investment is the interior of Bahia state, which has historically had low levels of economic and social development. Unfortunately, the production of wind energy in this region has been marked by several social conflicts. Despite this, these conflicts have largely gone unnoticed, as the appeal of clean energy has overshadowed them. Social issues such as land disputes are critical but often overlooked in green finance mechanisms. In some cases, these financial incentives may incentivize land grabbing from vulnerable populations in the name of clean energy production.

Abstract: Coastal fishing in the Moroccan Mediterranean plays a key role in the fishing industry's economy. This activity is an important source of jobs and income for many coastal communities in the Al Hoceima region of the north-western Mediterranean. This study aims to investigate the state of socio-economic knowledge of the fishermen of the coastal fleet in the region of Al Hoceima, using a diagnosis based on the analysis of socio-economic indicators. The data were obtained by a structured questionnaire with 90 fishermen, 30 captains, and 15 ship owners. The analysis of the data collected revealed, from a social level, a high rate of illiteracy and a low level of education among the fishermen. The economic weight and value of trawlers are significant. Despite the high commercial value of the species, the net income is not satisfactory, so the wealth produced by these fisheries does not have a real impact on the quality of life of the fishers, which does not guarantee the sustainable development of this activity.

  • Social Implications and Criticisms of Marketing

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Mandal; Pratap Chandra
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: Companies adopt marketing practices to delight their customers, generate revenues and profits, and to create customer relationships. However, companies may focus on their selfish motives of growth and may ignore consumer welfare and social welfare. Marketers are criticized for such practices and for the negative impact created on the society. The practices include high prices of products, deceptive practices, high pressure selling, harmful or unsafe products, planned obsolescence, poor service to disadvantaged customers, and negative impact of celebrities in marketing communications. Adverse impact on society includes false wants and materialism, too few social goods, and cultural pollution. Marketers are accused of harming and reducing competition. In the era of social marketing, companies should respect social concerns of various stakeholders and should maintain a balance between their own objective of growth and long-term social requirements. This will result in mutual trust and in sustaining the society.

Abstract: The social dimension of sustainability has not gained as much attention in bioeconomy (BE) literature as have the environmental and economic dimensions. Thus, this study's purpose is to analyze how social sustainability of the non-timber forest-based BE enterprise in the Amazonian Forest has been leveraged. A case study was performed in the largest enterprise in Latin America that produces babassu coconut-activated carbon for industrial use. This enterprise is a benefit corporation (B Corp) certified by B lab. The main contributions of the study are: (i) proposing a framework for social sustainability that considers its drivers and elements, for both internal and external stakeholders; (ii) indicating the impact of social sustainability on enterprises' business model; (iii) pointing out the contribution of technological innovations to the circular economy and preservation of traditions and environment; and (iv) studying an under-explored object such as a B Corp in the Amazonian Forest.

  • Sustainability Through Total Factor Productivity Growth in Agriculture
           Incorporating Institutional Factors

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Das; Ramesh Chandra
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: With the increasing population pressure and food insecurity problem in India, and the problem of unsustainable social and economic systems, it was inevitable to shift away the focus of agricultural activities from the traditional system to the modern one. Having followed a series of agricultural policies in India, the role of irrigation and institutional credits cannot be denied upon the growth of output in the sector. There are some studies on the total factor productivity growth (TFPG) in Indian agriculture, but a few studies cover the role of irrigation and bank credit upon agriculture output. The present study computes TFPG out of the institutional roles through public irrigation facilities and commercial bank credit besides traditional inputs in Indian agricultural sector for the post globalized era of 1991-2019. Using the growth accounting approach, the study finds that the institutional factors such as public irrigation facilities and bank finances have contributed significantly to the growth of the agricultural output in India as the values of TFPG have increased over time.

  • Twitter-Based Disaster Response Using Machine Learning

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Lamsal; Rabindra, Kumar, T. V. Vijay
      Pages: 1 - 18
Abstract: Twitter, a microblogging platform, receives real-time information via informal conversations, and it has, accordingly, become the main source of data for research studies based on emergency situational awareness. Millions of tweets are posted on Twitter every day, and during disasters, the frequency of tweets relating to an on-going crisis event grows exponentially. This unprecedented increase in the number of tweets during disasters needs to be monitored, identified, processed, and analyzed so that necessary measures can be taken at the earliest to reduce the loss or damage during emergencies. However, due to large voluminous data being available during crisis hours, it is almost impossible for a human to perform these tasks in real time. In this regard, a semi-automated AI-based disaster response system for Twitter data is proposed. The proposed disaster response system would be capable of extracting essential situational awareness information related to a disaster and would also be capable of sketching tentative area of critically affected population.

Abstract: It is necessary to equip employees with green abilities as well as to develop their dedication towards green behaviour, in order to improve an organization's environmental performance. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the direct impact of green training on organizational environmental performance (OEP) and the mediating effect of organizational citizenship behaviour on the environment (OCBE). The study is based on responses from 107 employees of the IT sector in India. The findings suggest that green training has a significant positive impact on the organizational environmental performance, and that the impact is strengthened by organizational citizenship behaviour towards the environment. The findings are of particular importance given the growing importance of sustainability in the organizational context.

  • Modelling Urbanization, Economic Growth, and Ecological Footprint Using
Environment Kuznets' Curve in Selected Asian Countries

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Kaur; Ramanpreet, Kaur, Tushinder Preet
      Pages: 1 - 19
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between urbanization, economic growth, and environmental quality using environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. The hypothesized link is tested using time-series analysis of 10 selected Asian countries over the period 1990–2018. First, the EKC hypothesis is tested through examining the relationship between EF, GDP, and URB. Further, the long-run relationship between EF, URB, and GDP is investigated using a vector error correction model. It was found that there is a cointegrated relationship between the variables in the countries China, Malaysia, and Thailand. Additionally, almost all error correction terms are correct in sign and are significant, which implies that some percentage of disequilibrium in EF in the previous year adjusts back to the long-run equilibrium in the current year. Therefore, an efficient trade-off between environmental protection and economic benefits should be taken, and EF should be reduced through changing consumption patterns, improving the efficiency of use of resources and cleaner technology choices.

Abstract: Satellite images play an important role for capturing Earth's surface. Using satellite images land cover monitoring could be done through which the modification or changes on land surface could be identified. Comparison can be made on the basis of past satellite image analysis, which helps to identify the changes that are occurring or have already occurred. Although there exist many techniques for land cover monitoring, proper land cover identification and detection of changes on the land cover is still a challenge. In the recent years, machine learning techniques have been utilized in distinct areas of image analysis and resulted in positive outcomes. Hence, in this paper, four supervised machine learning algorithms (i.e., support vector machine [SVM]), neural network [NN], maximum likelihood [MLC], and parallelepiped [PP] algorithms) have been utilized for land cover identification and detecting the amount of changes that have occurred in the individual land cover classes.
