  • Analysis of the Attitude Resources in English News Reports About

      Abstract: Xiong’an New Area is designed to become a new economic hot point. So it is urgent for Chinese media to publicize it to the whole world. With Appraisal Theory as the theoretical framework, through the analysis of the distribution and frequency of attitude resources in English news reports about Xiong’an, the present study tends to explore what kind of images the attitude resources have established in readers’ mind. It is found that Chinese journalists exquisitely employ attitude resources to create a forward-looking and down-to-earth international image of Xiong’an, which may contribute to its healthy development.

  • Student Teachers’ Perceptions of Their Development of 21st Century
           Competencies in Jordan

      Abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine Jordanian student teachers’ perceptions of whether their Teacher Education had prepared them for 21st-century competencies, and how well they applied these competencies to their classroom teaching. The study also identified best practices, major obstacles, and suggestions for achieving these competencies. The study was conducted in two universities in the South and three universities in the North of Jordan that offer teacher education programs. A mixed-methods approach was used for this study. The sample consisted of 457 Student teachers who completed a structured questionnaire with open-ended questions to assess 21st-century competencies. Quantitative data analysis relies on descriptive statistics and correlations, while qualitative data analysis relies on content analysis. Despite differences in competency, the student teachers achieved 21st-century competencies based on their self-assessment. Students’ perceptions of whether they succeed in implementing 21st-century competencies in their classrooms were documented in this study. The best-achieved competency was collaboration, and the least well-achieved competency was global connections. Answers to open-ended questions provided convincing evidence that courses involving collaborative and interactive learning, high quality, sufficient support, relevant 21st-century competencies, and integrating theory and practice can contribute significantly to the development of student teachers’ 21st-century competencies.

  • Local Government Financial Autonomy and Rural Development in Enugu State

      Abstract: The growing rate of poverty coupled with absence of basic infrastructural facilities in rural communities in Enugu State has sufficiently justified the need to investigate the factor(s) responsible for the inability of local governments to address these challenges and by extension ensure rural development in their areas. It is on this premise that this article offers to investigate the correlation between local government financial autonomy and rural development in Enugu State. The article adopts micro-analysis method using secondary data. The secondary data used in this study comprises of journal articles, books, official documents, policy documents and conference speeches. The finding of this study demonstrates that there is local government financial autonomy deficit in Enugu State resulting from manipulation of State Joint Local Government Account among others by the state government and this has greatly undermined efforts made by local governments towards development of rural communities. It is also indicated in the study that the measure adopted by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit titled “Guidelines to Reduce Vulnerabilities Created by Cash Withdrawals from Local Government Funds throughout Nigeria” to solve these problems failed. The implication of the foregoing findings is that rural development in Enugu State will continue to be impracticable until these fundamental issues are well addressed. Therefore, this article recommends among others that State Joint Local Government Account should be urgently abolished to enable local governments receive their statutory allocation among other funds directly.

  • The Shift of Directionality in Translation Activities in China (2011-2020)

      Abstract: Translation as an intercultural and interlingual activity is in the progress echoing synchronously the social, economic and cultural development of a country. In the long recorded history of China, translation has played an irreplaceable role in political, cultural and economic exchanges between China and other nations. By way of reviewing the long history of translation activities in China from the Han Dynasty to the 21st century, it is found that the directionality of translation from foreign languages into Chinese (FL-C) has kept over thousands of years until the late 10 years have witnessed the reversed directionality in translation. After perusing literature review together with quantified translation works and the comparative study, the four high tides with the dominant FL-C translation are periodized in the span of thousands of years and much focus is given to evidence and justify the shifted directionality of Chinese into foreign languages (C-FL) translation activities from 2011 to 2020. Aided by the quantitative and qualitative analysis, this article makes an in-depth exploration of C-FL translation activities from three major aspects, that is, main fields and target languages in translation industry, the government funded projects for publishing C-FL translation works, and the major publishing houses for C-FL translation works, and it also has a further elaboration of the shifted directionality of translation under the framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s(1984, 1986) sociological theories on the field and the capital.

  • Exploration of Space Sculpture

      Abstract: Sculpture is an art in space. It is a creation where the creator uses physical substance as a medium to express personal thoughts and emotions in space. The concept of space has become increasing rich, and artists are no longer satisfied with the pure expressions of ‘shape’ and ‘between shapes’. They are pursing elevation in the spiritual level. Sculpture appreciation requires multi-dimensional perspectives of the viewer. In addition to the shape of the sculpture, its spatial factor is also very important. If the artists can merge space and time organically and coordinate their interactions and relationship, then they can better display the art itself. The space sculpture can be roughly categorized into three kinds: positive, negative, and imaginary spaces. Positive space is the physical sculpture itself, negative space is the empty space within and around the sculpture, and the imaginary space is spiritual resonance between the viewer and the sculpture. Artists have inherited and innovate their understanding and usage of space and incorporate negative space rationally in sculpture creation.

  • Urban Housing Affordability in Zimbabwe: The Case of Homelink Housing
           Mortgage Scheme

      Abstract: The purpose of the study was to understand the factors that affect the affordability of urban housing with regards to the Homelink Housing mortgage scheme in Bindura, Zimbabwe. The study utilized qualitative methodology while a case study research design of Homelink was used. Data was collected using key informant interviews, surveys, and secondary data. A total of 30 participants were purposively selected to participate in the study. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of the study showed that there were five key factors that affected the affordability of urban housing in Zimbabwe. These are loan repayment, interest on the loan, inflation rate, loss of regular employment, and cost of construction. The conclusions of the study are that the affordability of housing in Zimbabwe is influenced by factors related to the socio-economic characteristics of households and loan characteristics.

      Abstract: In the post-pandemic era, students’ international exchanges present new characteristics, the proportion of students’ overseas exchanges has decreased significantly, new changes have taken place in students’ teaching methods, local internationalization has been paid attention to, and the student mobility mode has been reorganized. This paper aims to put forward countermeasures in alignment with the current trend of students’ international exchanges, enable online education and improve the education ecosystem; advocate local internationalization and internalize the form of education; strengthen the reform of system and mechanism and create a friendly virtual environment for international online education; strengthen the effectiveness of Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools and consolidate the level of foreign cooperation, so as to provide reference for international educators.

  • Multimodal Interactivity and Brand Image of Xiaomi Company: Take its
           Overseas Product Launches as an Example

      Abstract: In recent years, the mobile phone has become an indispensable part of people’s life, which is an important tool for people to socialize, shop, relax and pay. With the saturation of domestic mobile phone market, Chinese manufacturers are gradually casting their eyesight abroad and seeking to enter the overseas market. Xiaomi company is one of the best. Nowadays, almost all mobile phone manufacturers will launch new products through the product launching ceremony, which is also a good way of marketing and brand image transmission. The product launch usually contains abundant multimodal resources, such as image, text, music, video and so on. Therefore, the multimodal resources of Xiaomi product launch are worth exploring, which can provide experience and reference for other companies preparing to penetrate the international market. Drawing on the analytical framework of the interactive meaning of visual grammar, this thesis selects five videos of Xiaomi mobile phone product launch from 2016 to 2020 as the main research objects to elucidate how Xiaomi allocate the multimodal resources in its product launch and how multimodality facilitates the construction and transmission of Xiaomi’s brand image.

  • Ideology and Governance in Nigeria: The Case of 1999 Nigerian Constitution

      Abstract: The study investigates ideology in governance text focusing on The 1999 Nigerian Constitution. Critical Discourse analysis theory is applied to the study of selected extracts to show traces of ideological positioning in the text. The study shows that lexical choices and other text production techniques are used in the context of law making to project and legitimize group and sectional interests to the disadvantage of others. Findings from the study shows that such lexical choices as landmass and population are strategically used to confer advantage on a group to the disadvantage of others. The use of inclusive ‘we’ , distancing and access restriction are other text production techniques that are employed to project the dominant ideology in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.

  • “Problems” and “Answers” Faced by the Grassroots Governance of the
           CPC in Sudden Public Security Incidents: Thinking on the Prevention and
           Control of the COVID-19

      Abstract: Grass roots governance is the basic unit of the national governance system. The level and effectiveness of grass-roots governance are closely related to the vital interests of the people. In COVID-19 prevention and control, the grass-roots level is in the “front line” of epidemic prevention and control, which has played a positive role in the phased victory of the COVID-19 prevention and control war. However, it also exposes the difficulties of human resources, serious deficiencies in the storage, supply and development of grass-roots risk management materials, and the lack of a mature grass-roots risk management mechanism. Therefore, we should strengthen the construction of the CPC’s grass-roots risk management team from the two aspects of “quality” and “quantity”, adjusts the supply of grass-roots risk management materials from the two perspectives of “open source” and “cost reduction”, and build a grass-roots risk management system from the two aspects of “long-term” and “effectiveness”. Build an effective emergency response mechanism for grass-roots organizations to respond to major public security incidents, and increase human resources, material support and mechanism assistance, so as to effectively improve the governance level of grass-roots organizations of the CPC to respond to major public security incidents and promote the modernization of grass-roots governance.

  • Globalization, Cultural Diversity and Skewed Hybridization as Triple Helix
           of African Conflict of Identity and Development Burden: The Nigerian

      Abstract: Understanding the African space and developmental status in the global political economy requires examining its cultural identity in the globalization-hybridization context. While cultural diversity is noted for having stimulated social development and progress in some parts of the world, it has bred discontent and arrested development across Africa. This is particularly true of Nigeria where, for instance, one of the unpleasant realities of post-colonial history is the scourge of intra- and inter-ethnic wars. This resulted from contestation among cultural groups, and combined with other factors to deepen under-development in the country. This paper interrogates Nigeria’s mismanaged cultural diversity, and the consequent skewed hybridization for which colonial rule provided the gestation period, in the new age of globalization. It argues that, the unequal cultural hybridization, more harmful than (but in tandem with) mismanaged diversity, and as a high point of neo-imperialism unleashed through globalization, is fast eroding all vestiges of Nigerian collectivism and ‘we-feeling’. Engaging critical issues like language power, sexuality and marriage, and family values, as well as use and abuse of modern technology, the study found that Nigerians (particularly the young and middle-aged) are now sucking up Western orientations as being stamped and strengthened through globalization, without caution. This promotes fluid identity, which for a long time, is capable of making Nigeria’s pursuit of development in the contemporary international system a wild goose chase. It concludes that Nigerians, like other Africans, need to decisively work in one accord to develop strong mechanisms for resolving intergroup conflicts, deploy their cultural diversity as instrument for genuine development, and stamp out skewed cultural hybridization which is a signpost and symbolic representative of neo-imperialism. It is only such initiatives that can truly mainstream Africa, nay Nigeria, as respectable player within the global political economy space.

  • The Effectiveness of Using Thelen’s Model on Acquiring Physical Concepts
           and Developing Scientific Thinking for Tenth-Grade Students in Jordan

      Abstract: The current research aims to know the effect of teaching using Thelen’s Model on acquiring physical concepts and developing scientific thinking among tenth-grade students in Jordan. The researcher used the quasi-experimental method. The sample consisted of 55 female students in the tenth grade for the academic year 2021-2022 from Mutah Secondary School for Girls. The researcher prepared a test for physical concepts and built a test for developing scientific thinking. Their validity and reliability were verified. SPSS software was used to analyze the data statistically. The results showed that the students of the experimental group who studied according to Thelen’s Model outperformed the control group who studied in the usual way in the test of acquiring physical concepts, and in the test of developing scientific thinking with a statistically significant difference. In light of the results, the researcher recommended the necessity of using Thelen’s Model in teaching physics because of its effective impact in acquiring concepts related to this subject and in developing scientific thinking.

  • Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) Analysis of User Respond on Douyin
           Advertising Placement

      Abstract: With the development of mobile Internet technology, short-video social media with the characteristics of lower costs, wider dissemination, stronger interactive capabilities, and more precise marketing positioning, has gradually entered people’s world. Douyin is currently one of the most influential short-video social media that is becoming more and more popular with the public. Advertising placement is an increasingly frequent marketing tool used by advertisers on Douyin. In this context, it is very important to explore how users to process advertising placement in a short-video environment. This research studied the relationship between User Activity and Elaboration Participation based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model, and then infer which ELM routes were users with different activity tend to choose. In terms of specific theoretical framework, this article divided User Activity into two dimensions, User Viscosity and User Engagement, and maede them as independent variables, and constructed a cross-relationship model with two subordinate dimensions of Elaboration Participation: Scrutiny and Ads Involvement, which were regarded as dependent variables. This study adopted quantitative research methods, and SPSS24.0 as well as Office Excel 2016 was used to analyze the 158 valid data collected from the survey. Based on the data results, the following conclusions were drawn: a) User Activity is positively related to Elaboration Participation; b) User Viscosity is positively related to Ads Involvement; c) User Engagement is positively related to Ads Involvement. According to the conclusions drawn in this article, a series of theoretical and practical implications were generated, which guided both academic researchers and practitioners in short-video-related industries. At the same time, the limitations of this article and the suggestions for future researchers were also discussed simply and clearly in relevant sections.

  • Suspects’ Narrative Discourse and Identity Construction in Police
           Investigative Interviews

      Abstract: This study, using conversation analysis as the research methodology, probes into the relationship between suspects’ narrative discourse and identity construction in Chinese police investigative interviews. It is found that suspects may employ different expressions to construct various identities in the interaction. Hedging expressions in their narration depict their identity as narrators and through the use of direct speech, they could construct different identities of both themselves and other characters involved in the crime events. In the responsive turns, they adopt various language practices to normalize their illegal behaviors, attribute the blame to the victims involved in the case or mitigate the losses caused by their illegal behaviors.

      Abstract: Sheng Keyi, originaire d’un village vétuste de la province du Hunan, commence sa carrière d’écrivain au début des années 90. En tant que membre de la génération assistant aux influences de la politique de réforme et d’ouverture, elle prend les migrantes pour thème dans l’un de ses romans, Filles du Nord.
      Comme ce que le titre indique, ce sont des filles du Nord de la Chine à la poursuite d’une ascension sociale à Shenzhen, mais qui manquent de connaissances et se heurtent ainsi à un bon nombre de difficultés.
      A leurs dépens, elles découvrent qu’il existe autant de désirs que d’obstacles dans les grandes villes. Dans cet article, nous nous concentrerons sur la question suivante : « Les migrantes du Nord seront-elles dévoyées devant les défis semblant incontournables et les tentations matérielles innombrables ' »
      Au bout d’une analyse de ce chef-d’œuvre, nous constaterons que face à la corruption des mœurs et la discrimination sexiste et régionale, ces filles du Nord, pauvres mais tenaces et courageuses, persistent dans leurs propres principes et leurs belles qualités.

  • Apprentissage à l’aide d’une plateforme Moodle et Emotions des

      Abstract: La pandémie de la COVID - 19 a occasionné, dans la plupart des pays du monde, la fermeture des écoles et des structures de formation. Pour assurer l’éducation et la continuité de la formation des apprenants, la Côte d’Ivoire a opté pour le télé-enseignement. C’est ainsi que l’IPNETP a développé à l’attention du corps professoral et des étudiants une plateforme Moodle pour la réalisation des activités d’enseignement apprentissage à distance. Cette nouvelle modalité de formation, dans un contexte de rupture brusque d’avec l’enseignement en présentiel, ne susciterait-elle pas des inquiétudes d’ordre émotionnel chez les apprenants ' En vue de répondre à cette interrogation, la présente étude se propose d’analyser les états émotionnels et les réactions des Etudiants - Formateurs de l’IPNETP face à l’utilisation de la plateforme Moodle. Sur la base des données collectées à l’aide d’un questionnaire et d’un guide d’entretien, l’étude présente deux principaux résultats. La majorité des étudiants ressente des émotions positives stimulant l’emploi de la plateforme Moodle. Cependant, les Etudiants - Formateurs rencontrent des difficultés liées à l’accès à la plateforme de formation. Face à ces difficultés, la majorité d’entre eux s’oriente vers des alternatives plus accessibles comme le recours à une tierce personne.
