  • A Comparison Between the Thought of Wei Yuan and Xunzi

    • Authors: Xiaofei MA
      Pages: 5 - 10
Abstract: The thought of Wei Yuan has a lot in common with that of Xunzi. First of all, Wei Yuan and Xunzi both care more about modern times instead of ancient times. Secondly, these two philosophers focus a lot on practical administration and value utility, which is considered to be utilitarian. Thirdly, Wei Yuan usually uses exegesis of The Book of Odes as a vehicle for political commentary just as Xunzi does. The similarity results from similar social background of the late Qing and Warring state periods; the revival of the Modern-text School which in 19th century served as the most important camp for the tradition of focusing on practical administration developed by Xunzi, as well as the popularity of study of Xunzi in the Qing Dynasty. However, with his mind deeply rooted in the cultural tradition of China, Wei Yuan failed to step further into modernity.

  • Caribbean Displacement and the Question of Oppression and Cultural Changes
of Post-colonialism in Caryl Phillips’s Crossing the River

    • Authors: Abdalhadi Nimer Abdalqader Abu Jweid
      Pages: 17 - 24
Abstract: This article examines the conditions of the displaced individuals in Caryl Phillips’s Crossing the River (1993). In essence, the displaced individuals undergo oppressive experience. They are forced to leave their homeland for other lands. The study is going to demonstrate how these displaced minorities cope with their conditional presence in the displacement lands. In the main, displacement involves the diasporic movement of the colonized people and their settlement in other lands which are not their own. The analysis will concentrate on the imperial practices exerted over the displaced individuals. As such, the study will apply a postcolonial methodological approach to explore the colonial relationship between the colonized individuals and their colonizers. The displaced individuals become prone to transformation in their new lands since they are negatively suppressed by the colonizers. In the course of the analysis, the focus will be on Phillips’s portrayal of the displaced individuals and their interactions with other characters whether the colonizer or other displaced individualities.

  • Why Indonesia’s Political Attitude not Strong in Myanmar’s Military
Coup' Regional Political Studies for Elections and Democracy

    • Authors: Osbin Samosir
      Pages: 25 - 31
Abstract: The Indonesian government has taken steps to reduce the level of political violence in Myanmar. This effort is one way of political and humanitarian responsibility for the advancement of democracy in the Southeast Asian region. This effort is one of the unusual actions because it is outside the agreement made by countries in the Southeast Asian region. The actions of the Myanmar military junta who have committed murders against their own citizens cannot be seen with a blind eye by their neighbors, namely Indonesia. Thousands of citizens who support Myanmar’s democratic government have been forced into detention by the military junta that carried out the coup. The Activist Group Organization for Assistant Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported that as of Wednesday, April 7, at least 581 civilians who were demonstrating were killed by the Myanmar Military Junta. The purpose of this study is to find out and reveal why the Indonesian government dared to offer the initiative to stop political unrest in Myanmar and how it affected Indonesia. The informants of this research consisted of officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, international political observers, and lecturers of international relations.

  • Work and Inmate Resocialization: An Ambiguous Solution

    • Authors: Jaime Luiz Cunha de Souza, Daniel Augusto Lobo de Melo
      Pages: 32 - 39
Abstract: This article evaluates the efficiency of an agreement between the SEAP-Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration of Pará state, Brazil and a metallurgical company located in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará, Brazil, which sought to provide jobs to prisoners during their sentences. We used qualitative and quantitative research methods and included data on the 240 inmates who participated in the above-mentioned initiative while serving in a semi-open prison regime, after being accepted into the program. Results show a blatant mismatch between the rhetoric that supports resocialization strategies and the reality of the situation, in which such initiatives are minor accessories in the context of the responsibilities involved in managing prison institutions.

  • Democracy and Electoral Corruption in Nigeria: Strategies for Engendering
           Credible Elections

    • Authors: Mike Omilusi, Simeon A. Daisi
      Pages: 64 - 71
Abstract: Periodic and credible elections are regarded as a key component for enhancing the legitimacy of a government and strengthening the social contract between citizens and their governments. Peaceful, transparent and regular competition for political power through elections is a defining feature of stable democracy. In Nigeria, the credibility of the electoral process and consequently, acceptability of election outcomes, are contentious because they are always accompanied with acrimony, widespread irregularities, violence, and all forms of malpractices such as vote buying, thuggery, rigging, among others. This article focuses on the nature and dynamics of electoral corruption in Nigeria and how these have impacted on democratic governance. It essentially recommends strategic ways of combating the menace of electoral corruption with a view to consolidating democracy in Africa’s most populous country.

  • Theoretical and Practical Research on Boosting the High Quality
Development of Higher Education by Technical Service Support System

    • Authors: Chaoming LI, Weixi YANG
      Pages: 72 - 77
Abstract: Based on the development trend of higher education and society’s urgent demand for cross-compound talent training, the paper proposes to change the status quo of teachers and students’ weak innovation consciousness of practical teaching, lack of modern testing skills and weak ability of designing comprehensive innovative experiments by constructing the technical service support system and empirical analysis. On the basis of the optimization of experimental teaching conditions, constructing technical service support system and its connotation, the subjective initiative of teachers and students should be brought into full play, and the practical ability and operation ability of teachers and students should be further enhanced to enlighten their scientific and technological thinking. Then promote the construction of a hierarchical progressive system of experimental teaching in our university from basic experiments to comprehensive experiments and innovative experiments, and realize the high-quality development of higher education.

  • What is the Balance of Knowledge And Technology': Study on the Path of
Enhancing the Core Literacy of University Teachers in the Context of New
           Engineering

    • Authors: Dan LIU, Junhao WANG
      Pages: 87 - 91
Abstract: The new engineering discipline will be built with the concept of facing future changes and leading the new industrial revolution, with “integration and innovation” as the new education paradigm, cultivating future-oriented and innovative engineering talents with modern thinking. The “new” engineering education is born out of the contradiction between national industrial development and talent demand. At the same time, the key to the new engineering education lies in the “new paradigm”, which lies in using the new “engineering paradigm” to revitalize the “old” engineering majors, not in eliminating the “old” engineering majors. The key is to revitalize the “old” engineering professions with a new “engineering paradigm”, not to eliminate the “old” engineering professions. The Fourth Industrial Revolution has already sounded the trumpet of “emancipation of labour” and “integration of innovation”. Therefore, the key connotation of the “new” engineering majors should be on what kind of “new” engineering talents should be cultivated, and what kind of “new literacy” should be possessed by university teachers, and how should university teachers be trained in “cross-border integration”' It is urgent to think about and discuss how to balance the relationship between “learning from all” and “specialization and knowledge” in “cross-border integration”.
