Authors:Xiaofei MA Pages: 5 - 10 Abstract: The thought of Wei Yuan has a lot in common with that of Xunzi. First of all, Wei Yuan and Xunzi both care more about modern times instead of ancient times. Secondly, these two philosophers focus a lot on practical administration and value utility, which is considered to be utilitarian. Thirdly, Wei Yuan usually uses exegesis of The Book of Odes as a vehicle for political commentary just as Xunzi does. The similarity results from similar social background of the late Qing and Warring state periods; the revival of the Modern-text School which in 19th century served as the most important camp for the tradition of focusing on practical administration developed by Xunzi, as well as the popularity of study of Xunzi in the Qing Dynasty. However, with his mind deeply rooted in the cultural tradition of China, Wei Yuan failed to step further into modernity. PubDate: 2022-04-26 DOI: 10.3968/12420 Issue No:Vol. 18, No. 2 (2022)

Authors:Abdalhadi Nimer Abdalqader Abu Jweid Pages: 17 - 24 Abstract: This article examines the conditions of the displaced individuals in Caryl Phillips’s Crossing the River (1993). In essence, the displaced individuals undergo oppressive experience. They are forced to leave their homeland for other lands. The study is going to demonstrate how these displaced minorities cope with their conditional presence in the displacement lands. In the main, displacement involves the diasporic movement of the colonized people and their settlement in other lands which are not their own. The analysis will concentrate on the imperial practices exerted over the displaced individuals. As such, the study will apply a postcolonial methodological approach to explore the colonial relationship between the colonized individuals and their colonizers. The displaced individuals become prone to transformation in their new lands since they are negatively suppressed by the colonizers. In the course of the analysis, the focus will be on Phillips’s portrayal of the displaced individuals and their interactions with other characters whether the colonizer or other displaced individualities. Authors:Jaime Luiz Cunha de Souza, Daniel Augusto Lobo de Melo Pages: 32 - 39 Abstract: This article evaluates the efficiency of an agreement between the SEAP-Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration of Pará state, Brazil and a metallurgical company located in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará, Brazil, which sought to provide jobs to prisoners during their sentences. We used qualitative and quantitative research methods and included data on the 240 inmates who participated in the above-mentioned initiative while serving in a semi-open prison regime, after being accepted into the program. Results show a blatant mismatch between the rhetoric that supports resocialization strategies and the reality of the situation, in which such initiatives are minor accessories in the context of the responsibilities involved in managing prison institutions. Authors:Dan LIU, Junhao WANG Pages: 87 - 91 Abstract: The new engineering discipline will be built with the concept of facing future changes and leading the new industrial revolution, with “integration and innovation” as the new education paradigm, cultivating future-oriented and innovative engineering talents with modern thinking. The “new” engineering education is born out of the contradiction between national industrial development and talent demand. At the same time, the key to the new engineering education lies in the “new paradigm”, which lies in using the new “engineering paradigm” to revitalize the “old” engineering majors, not in eliminating the “old” engineering majors. The key is to revitalize the “old” engineering professions with a new “engineering paradigm”, not to eliminate the “old” engineering professions. The Fourth Industrial Revolution has already sounded the trumpet of “emancipation of labour” and “integration of innovation”. Therefore, the key connotation of the “new” engineering majors should be on what kind of “new” engineering talents should be cultivated, and what kind of “new literacy” should be possessed by university teachers, and how should university teachers be trained in “cross-border integration”' It is urgent to think about and discuss how to balance the relationship between “learning from all” and “specialization and knowledge” in “cross-border integration”.
