  • Study on the Narrative Variations in the English Translation of Yu Hua’s
           China in Ten Words

    • Authors: Jie LI
      Pages: 1 - 7
Abstract: Yu Hua’s non-fiction, China in Ten Words, was translated into English by American sinologist Allan Hepburn Barr and released by Random House in 2011. The translation stirred considerable discussion among English-speaking audiences. Utilizing a parallel Chinese-English corpus, this study employs a narrative stylistics framework to conduct a comparative analysis of the original and translated texts, examining narrative variations and their effects. The research highlights significant alterations in narrative time, frequency, perspective, and distance in the translation. Most changes—particularly in time, frequency, and perspective—tended to diminish the narrative’s impact, thereby detracting from the literary quality of the work. However, adjustments in narrative distance positively affected the narrative, subtly enhancing the translated text compared to the original.

  • Historical Investigation and Realistic Enlightenment of the CPC's
Construction of International Discourse Power: Taking the Translation and
Dissemination of Mao Zedong's Works in Vietnamese as an Example

    • Authors: Qinhan ZENG, Rong ZENG
      Pages: 8 - 14
Abstract: Throughout the process of translating and disseminating of Mao Zedong’s works in Vietnamese, it can be found that their types and quantities have gone through different periods with the evolution of Sino Vietnamese relations, exhibiting strong “revolutionary” characteristics, distinct “combat” characteristics, and strong “construction” characteristics. Based on the practical need of external dissemination of the CPC’s ideological theories and policy propositions, the Mao Zedong's works in Vietnamese published by Chinese publishing institutions are superior to Vietnamese publishing institutions in both types and quantities. As an important carrier for enhancing political mutual trust between the governments of China and Vietnam, as well as promoting friendly exchanges between the two peoples, the translation and dissemination of Mao Zedong’s works in Vietnamese not only provided important guidance for Vietnam’s independence, liberation, and economic and social development, but also had a significant impact on the dissemination of Mao Zedong Thought in Vietnam and the construction of China’s international discourse power.

  • Assessment of Success and Failure Factors in Policy Implementation on
           Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) Education

    • Authors: M. Olasunkanmi Aliyu, F. B. Bamire, O. R. Oparinde, S. ‘Tayo Subair
      Pages: 15 - 22
Abstract: Success of any government policy hinges on its execution. The Internally Displaced Persons deserve to be given reasonable consideration as enshrined in the displaced persons policy. However, many factors determine whether the desired benefits of the policy, which includes; enjoyment of equal fundamental human rights as those who are in their homes, freedom from any form of brutality and creation of conducive learning environment are met. This paper presents an empirical study of success and failure factors in policy implementation on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) education and its implications. A total of 2,900,000 IDPs housed in government recognized camps in Nigeria and 24 Desk Officers in-charge of IDPs in the Ministries of Education of the States under study were used. Three research questions were raised and answered using qualitative approach to analyze the data. The major findings are that IDPs of school age in North Central had low access to education; in the North East and North West, they had moderate access but they had high access to quality and inclusive education in South-South. The extent of policy practice of IDPs’ education was moderate in North Central, North West and in South-South but the extent of policy practice in the North East was high; because, the policy dictates were strictly followed. The success of the policy implementation in the Northern part of the country were: IDPs’ access to education, conducive and safe environment for learning and integration; while the failure aspect of the policy implementation was poor access to education. In South-South, success area of policy implementation include access to education and care for girl-child peculiarities, while the down side of the policy implementation in this region was poor integration of IDPs. Therefore, it was concluded that the extent of policy practice of IDPs’ education was moderate in North Central, North West and in South-South but high in North East because of the strict compliance with the policy dictates.

  • On The Transcendence of Marx’s Humanized View of Nature Over
           Non-anthropocentrism Ontology of Wild Nature

    • Authors: Tongjun LU
      Pages: 39 - 45
Abstract: The ecological culture of non-anthropocentrism which is reflected in the concept of “wild nature” in its philosophical ontology hopes to solve ecological and environmental problems through “the absence of people”. The original intention of establishing the ontology of “wild nature” was to save people from the deteriorating ecological environment, but in the end, it fell into a logical dilemma of destroying people. However, the starting point and ultimate purpose of solving ecological and environmental problems should be based on “real people” and “real society”. Based on the historical materialist position, Marx’s humanized view of nature not only advocates the necessity of the naturalization of humans and the practicality of humanization of nature, but also provides scientific guidance for getting out of the ontological dilemma of“wild nature” in the ecological culture of non-anthropocentrism.

  • Religious Influence of Boko-Haram and Governance Challenges in Handling
           Internal Displaced Citizens in Nigeria

    • Authors: David Olubunmi Apeloko, Celestina Ekene Chukwudi, Abayomi John Aluko
      Pages: 56 - 66
Abstract: The prevalence of religious sacrilege is attributed to a lack of comprehension regarding the inherent separation between religion and government. This study explores the intricate relationship between the religious influence of Boko Haram, a notorious extremist group in Nigeria. This study examined the influence of Boko-Haram and governance in the management of internally displaced persons in the Northeast region, specifically Borno and Yobe in Nigeria. Methodologically, content and narrative analysis are used to analyse the study objective. Conflict Management theory is adopted for the underpinning of the study. The findings suggest that religious individuals and groups have disrupted the established societal roles and norms of citizens, thereby undermining the legitimacy of constitutional principles. Hence, the study concludes that religious actors and followers have desecrated constitutional legitimacy, consequently affecting citizens. Therefore, governance has been confronted with administrative fiasco in its handling of the affected citizens in the study area.

  • Spaces of Hospitality and Human Connection: An Ethnographic Analysis of
the Social and Emotional Dynamics in a Pediatric Waiting Room

    • Authors: Danilo Augusto Blanco dos Santos, Roseane Barcellos Marques
      Pages: 73 - 78
Abstract: This study delves into the intricate social and emotional dynamics within a pediatric waiting room at UPA Dr. Thelmo de Almeida Cruz, located in Jacareí, São Paulo, Brazil. Through a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research aims to uncover the interactions and experiences shaped by the concepts of “comunitesque,” liminality, and liminoid, as explored in the works of Lugosi and Turner. The pediatric waiting room, a space teeming with children and their families awaiting care, serves as a microcosm for examining the broader implications of healthcare environments on patient and family well-being. By focusing on the nuances of human connections and the atmosphere within these settings, the study seeks to contribute to the development of more welcoming, humanized, and holistic healthcare practices. The findings underscore the significance of nurturing spaces that facilitate genuine human connections, highlighting their fundamental role in promoting health and well-being in a comprehensive and inclusive manner.

  • Media, Hate Speech and Peace Building in Nigeria

    • Authors: ‘Wale Sadeeq
      Pages: 79 - 90
Abstract: The importance of mass media in the development process of any country cannot be over-emphasized. Aside their traditional roles which are to inform, educate and entertain, the media, which include print, broadcast and new media, also serve as catalysts for development through creation of veritable avenues for aggregation and dissemination of opinions, devoid of undue censorship. The media also facilitate peace building, particularly in plural societies and serve as veritable instruments for national integration. Using a blend of secondary and primary data, this paper, which covers the Fourth Republic (1999 till date), assessed the nexus among the media, hate speech and peace building in Nigeria, interrogating the roles of the media vis-a-vis the freedom of expression as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and how effectively it has performed its gate-keeping roles to guard against hate speeches capable of thwarting peace building, particularly among the various ethnic, religious and social groups in Nigeria. The paper infered that although hate speech is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, concerted efforts must be made to sensitize citizens on the need to end its menace to prevent incitement and plunging the country into needless crises capable of halting peace building and threatening its continued corporate existence.

  • On the Perspective of Cross-Cultural Communication, the Contemporary Value
and Optimization Path of English Translation of Qilu Folk Tourism Culture
           Terms

    • Authors: Jie SHI, Lulu JIN, Mengwei YU
      Pages: 97 - 100
Abstract: As China gradually deepens cross-cultural exchanges, it is essential to effectively communicate China’s story and spread Chinese culture, focusing on showcasing a true, three-dimensional, and comprehensive China. The core issue of telling China’s story urgently needs to be explored from the perspective of the dissemination of folk tourism culture, with folk tourism culture terms as the entry point. Through relevant literature research, this paper analyzes the contemporary value of the English translation of folk tourism culture terms in cross-cultural communication. Relying on Shandong’s Qilu folk customs, the paper explores the “source” of Confucian culture and elements of Chinese civilization. It elaborates on the realistic background of the English translation of Qilu folk culture terms from four aspects: language, semantics, pragmatics, and culture. By conducting case analyses on provincial scenic spots, museums, memorials, and folk museums, the paper aims to uncover the connotations of folk culture, restore the original appearance, recreate the charm, harmonize differences, and narrate quality. It outlines an optimization mechanism for the English translation of Qilu folk tourism culture terms, aiming to better guide and standardize the practice.

  • Pragmatic Exploration of Cross-Cultural Encounters in Chimamanda
           Adichie’s Americanah

    • Authors: Olusegun O. Jegede
      Pages: 101 - 108
Abstract: This study examines the realities of the immigrant experience, specifically focusing on Chimamanda Adichie’s novel Americanah as a lens through which to explore the contextual dimensions of race, identity, and immigration in contemporary America. The purpose of this research is to unravel how the cultural context shapes the portrayal of cross-cultural encounters and informs the characters’ experiences in the novel. Employing a qualitative approach, the study examines key excerpts from Americanah to unveil how cultural context helps in conveying the different challenges and triumphs faced by African immigrants in the United States. The findings of this research illuminate the complex dynamics of race relations, identity formation, and the emotional challenges of migration as portrayed in the novel. The framework of contextualism provides a good understanding of how these themes are deeply intertwined with the broader societal and historical context of America. The study concludes that the novel serves as a poignant narrative that emphasizes the importance of contextual understanding in comprehending the immigrant experience, presenting a powerful message about the realities of cross-cultural encounters in the United States.
