The ultimate purpose of advertising is to initially create an impressive image in the consumers and then to persuade them to make a purchase of the goods advertised. From the above consideration, it is of great value to give a detailed analysis of the advertising. Any advertising relies on the transmission of language and therefore its analysis focuses on the advertising language. Lots of linguists have conducted numerous research on the advertising language, its structure and also the relationships between advertising and culture. This paper tried to deal with the issue from the angle of Memetics with the intention that it could offer a novel perspective to study advertising language. Authors:Jing SUN, Ziyi WANG, Bingxin ZHOU Pages: 9 - 12 Abstract: In the middle and late 19th century, East Asian countries gradually embarked on the road of modernization after the hit of the West. China, Japan and Choson Dynasty, as representatives among those countries, had adopted corresponding reform measures. Among them, the Chinese Westernization Movement and the Japanese Meiji Restoration have been much examined in terms of historical facts, but the analysis of Eo Yun-jung reform of Choson Dynasty and the comparison of the reforms of China, Japan and Choson Dynasty in the late 19th century is slightly insufficient. Thus this paper attempts to make a preliminary interpretation of the academic significance and contemporary value of those reforms through the review of academic history and the theoretical discussions, looking forward to arousing more attention and leading more profound researches on this topic. Authors:Chunmiao LI Pages: 13 - 17 Abstract: Open universities belong to a new kind of colleges and universities dedicated to lifelong education. Teachers’ professional development not only plays a vital role in high-quality development of open universities, but also inevitably has special logics different from other ordinary colleges and universities. Extensive application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of higher education provides a brand-new perspective and mindset for revealing such special logics. It is necessary to take into account the status quo of teachers’ professional development in open universities, focus on in-depth integration of AI and education, and come up with scientific paths for practice in teachers’ professional development in open universities. Authors:Timothy A. Ogunleye, Kehinde K. Adesanya, Oluwatosin J. Akinsola, Godwill I. Wilcox Pages: 18 - 31 Abstract: This paper examines four different methods of computing partial correlation coefficients. These include conventional method, variance-covariance matrix approach, regression residual’s approach, and OLS method. Each of these is fully illustrated with practical examples as well as R syntax. Applicability of each of the methods is discussed in our illustrations. Strength and weakness of each method are extensively detailed. It’s, however, discovered that none of the basic assumptions of partial correlation: linearity, normality, and non-existence of outliers is violated after performing statistical checks on the datasets used. The study, therefore, recommends the best method(s) of computing partial correlation coefficients when at least one variable is held constant, thereby adding more invaluable knowledge to the existing literatures. Finally, the study further recommends the best method in each scenario with illustrative examples as evidences. PubDate: 2022-03-26 DOI: 10.3968/12498 Issue No:Vol. 18, No. 1 (2022)
Authors:Hongxia ZHANG Pages: 32 - 37 Abstract: This study was conducted with 51 normal university students in a third-year class of an English major at a university. A combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis was used, and questionnaires and interviews were adopted as research tools. The questionnaire survey was applied to measure the teaching efficacy of the students before and after the internship as a volunteer teacher. Six normal university students majoring in English from the object of study were selected for interviews and recordings, and two interviews were conducted before and after the internship to dig deeper into imperceptible changes in the subjective emotions of those students before and after their internships. After the questionnaires and interviews were completed at each stage, SPSS 26.0 was used to analyse the stage data and overall data from the questionnaires, and content analysis was carried out on the interview data. The aim of this paper is to explore the impact of educational internships on normal university students’ sense of teaching efficacy, identify the influencing factors, propose strategies to enhance the sense of teaching efficacy of normal university students majoring in English, and provide guiding suggestions for the pre-service cultivation of normal university students, the construction of courses for those students, and the improvement of the level of cooperation with internship bases. Authors:Hong XIAO Pages: 38 - 41 Abstract: Religious lifestyle is the lifestyle of religious believers who restrict their behaviors according to the provisions of religious teachings. It can be regarded as a special combination of social groups -- the lifestyle of religious believers. At the same time, it has one side consistent with secular life style. In 1898, the construction of the Middle East Railway opened a huge “social revolution” for Harbin, China, which rapidly rose from a traditional natural village to a modern metropolis in Northeast Asia within a short period of one or two decades. As the city opened its own port for trade, a large number of immigrants from Russia, Japan, the United States, France, Britain, Germany and other countries poured into the city. The Middle East Railway became the carrier of migration of immigrants, and immigrants became the media for the spread of religious beliefs. Foreign religions were brought to Harbin, which formed a special and main content of Harbin life style. PubDate: 2022-03-26 DOI: 10.3968/12499 Issue No:Vol. 18, No. 1 (2022)

Authors:Hui ZHAN, Changbao LI Pages: 49 - 55 Abstract: Yumi, a representative work of Bi Feiyu, wins Lu Xun Literary Prize and its English Verison Three Sisters, translated by Howard Goldblatt and his wife Sylvia Lin-chun Lin, wins the fourth Man Asian Literary Prize, making this book popular both at home and abroad. Domestic and oversea scholars try to analyze both the original work and its English version. After having a comprehensive research on related studies, we find that there are few previous studies on the translation of Yumi and few theories are applied to their analyses. Although there have been many studies on the translator Goldblatt, many of them focus on Mo Yan’s works, but few on Bi Feiyu’s novels. Therefore, there is much to be explored in this field. This article aims to analyze the translation of Yumi from the perspective of sociology with the help of the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, trying to make clear different factors that play a role in the process of translation of Yumi. Under the framework of Bourdieu’s sociological theory, the analysis is conducted from three aspects: field, capital and habitus, all of which are core ideas of Bourdieu’s sociological theory. Authors:Xiaoting LI, Changbao LI Pages: 56 - 62 Abstract: As a representative of “Avant-garde” novelist, Can Xue is unique in contemporary Chinese literature with her alternative writing style. Most of her works have been translated into English and achieved a quite remarkable literary status in English-speaking countries. Taking Can Xue’s first English translation of Dialogues in Paradise as a case study, this paper analyzes the evaluation and manipulation of five elements (the translation subject, content, channel, audience and effect) in the translation process, and points out that the English translation and communication of Dialogues in Paradise is of significance to the “going out” of Chinese literary works: the translation content that is in line with Western literary aesthetics, by way of co-translation between Chinese and Western translators, is transmitted to the translation audience through western channels, so as to promote the “going out” of the Chinese literature. Authors:Yaqi YANG, Yuchi JIA Pages: 78 - 82 Abstract: This paper aims to figure out the translation methods of the terms used in Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for COVID-19 (Trial Version 7). By comparing the Chinese and English versions of the officially published article and probing into the translation of some mentioned term names, the translation methods of these terms in Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for COVID-19 (Trial Version 7) are divided into three types, a) transliteration; b) free translation; c) combination of literal translation and free translation. It could be found that the combined utilization of these three translation methods makes terms more understandable for foreigners who are interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), especially during the period of COVID-19 epidemic. The result suggests that more efforts should be put into the field of TCM translation and expanding the international influence of TCM.
