Abstract: From a perspective centered on actor experiences, this paper analyzes time, the accumulation of academic merits, and space as conditions for the configuration of academic networks in the area of sociology in Mexico. Empirical data come from 18 PhD holders affiliated to the main sociology research and teaching establishments in the country. The results indicate that the conditions studied have effects on the ways in which sociologists conduct collaborative academic work throughout their professional careers.

Abstract: This article proposes an updated epistemological and methodological framework to understand how the structural and day-to-day social dimensions are articulated in the center-periphery notion at different levels (worldwide, national, regional, and local) of the geopolitical configuration. This article presents a historical description, both economic and sociological, of the variations of hegemonic discourses on efficiency, race, and development as articulating axes. Similarly, by means of a graphic representation, it proposes several analytical categories to understand how the notion of center-periphery is nowadays materialized and how the current (liquid) structural dimension should be studied from a situated perspective.

Abstract: This article hypothesizes that one way to understand the aggressive behavior of clients toward workers in the contemporary market is to focus on the emergence of the right to personal comfort as a characteristic of a new spirit of the consumer. This right to personal comfort, derived from a situation of authority and subordination between clients and workers, given the personalization of contemporary markets, was paradoxically displayed by the companies themselves in their customer service processes, as can be seen in the customer service manuals analyzed in this work.

Abstract: During the 1980s, violence increased significantly in the main Colombian cities. However, a form of violence stands out, that known by the media as “social cleansing”, aimed at expeditiously eliminating population sectors allegedly involved in crime, drug addiction, prostitution, and subversion. The article analyzes the modus operandi, patterns, and justifications of “La Mano Negra”, a death squad that committed murders in the city of Bucaramanga (Colombia). The article proposes that such a form of violence is a symptom of the institutional insufficiency to provide security, justice, and well-being to the community.

Abstract: The dissimilar constructs that the accounting community has elaborated on the accounting system, based on cause/effect, means/end and whole/part perspectives, have been insufficient to observe complex contemporary reality. Hence, this article uses a functional reference to observe, from the standpoint of the system/environment differentiated unit, the complexity of the element/ relationship category. The study begins with a first-order observation of these constructs, and then presents a second-order sociological reconstruction based on the work of Niklas Luhmann. The results constitute a meta-analysis of the structure of the accounting system, which suggests new theoretical and pragmatic insights for accounting.

Abstract: The officially approved contents on sexual education for middle school in Mexico are ruled by the laicity principle. However, their delivery in classrooms is shaped by values and beliefs of religious origin that configure the faculty’s subjectivity and their limited ability to manage tensions within the school community. Through interviews and classroom observation, the author documented the discourses and practices of teachers and students that give meaning to such contents and incorporate regulations circumscribed by the Judeo-Christian morality. This regularly co-exists with discursive practices that integrate laicity principles and expressions of resistance that transform the “legitimate” sexual order.

Abstract: In the twilight of the Chilean dictator-ship (1985-1986), when the form of transition to democracy was being defined, a group of researchers applied Alain Touraine’s methodology of sociological intervention to the pobladores’ movement. Their conclusion that the pobladores were not a social movement but an impos-sible social movement could have contributed to consolidate a negotiated form of democratization that excluded social actors like the pobladores. Applying the concept of social science’s performativity, this paper investigates to what extent sociology helped establish the coordinates that oriented Chile’s transition to democracy.
