  • Punk, Planetarity, and the Wages of Neocolonial Globalization

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Although discussions of punk tend to coalesce around its manifestation in the North Atlantic, recent research and documentary filmmaking have focused on punk as a worldwide phenomenon (Dunn; Patton; Jones and Maas). What largely remains underexplored is the neocolonial cultural politics of its global travels—although O'Connor and Dunn briefly address this. More precisely, turning to Gayatri Spivak's conceptual division in Death of a Discipline, one can ask whether punk is an element of neocolonial globalization, "the imposition of the same system of exchange everywhere" (72), or part of a novel decolonial planetarity, which is "in the species of alterity" (72). As Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui summarizes this division ... Read More

  • Raudal y pervivencia del corrido mexicano

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

Intercultural Encounter at the 1924 Olympic Football Tournament

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Across Latin America, football is central to the construction of local, regional, and national identities and vital to their representation abroad. The sport's function as "un espejo en donde verse y ser, al mismo tiempo, mirado" (Alabarces 2018, 194) is best observed during "mega-events" such as the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic Football Tournament, defined as "large-scale cultural events, which have a dramatic character, mass popular appeal and international significance" (Roche 2008, 286). The worldwide audience, intense media interest, and antagonistic structure of such competitions generate potent arenas for the "articulation of a shared national identity" (Podalsky 2015, 8) and a legible "confrontation" ... • Camaleón cultural: La construcción discursiva, musical y performativa
"chola" en la artista peruana Ruby Palomino

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• "The Many Faces and Shades of Blackness": Race, Class, and Geography in
           Early Twenty-First-Century Telenovela Representations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "Preta is accepted by children as well. I'm happy to see blond and blue-eyed little girls passing me on the street and shouting: 'Preta, Preta, you're beautiful!' Who knows, maybe we will bring forth a generation of cool children who can look at a Black person and admire them. In my childhood, I only had Xuxa to admire because of the absence of the reference of a Black woman on TV."1 This is how the actress Taís Araújo described the ways that, through her character of Preta ("Black girl" or "Black woman" in Portuguese) in Da Cor do Pecado, the hegemony of the White ideal of beauty in Brazilian telenovelas was truly challenged for the first time. As Araújo herself was keenly aware in the interview she gave to the ... Read More

  • The Murder of a Pawnbroker and the Gentlemen's Duel

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Of recent, pawnbrokers have developed into a truly alarming presence in Lima. It would be difficult to find in the world another city like Lima, so favorable to these types of businesses … the pawnbroker should live away from society, closed in his establishment guarding his pawns against a misfortune that could come at any moment to his front door.1In early twentieth-century Lima, modernization, an indigenismo literary movement, and the political problem of incorporating el indio took the national center stage. Banks, insurance, and finance companies were established to support the emergent industrialization of the national economy, yet the local economy continued to engage in traditional forms of financial ...

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • Sports Culture in Latin American History ed. by David M. K. Sheinin
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This fascinating collection casts a wide net of investigation. All but two of the essays focus on sports and athletic practices of the twentieth century. Such a proportion could be expected, as most cultural activities studied in this collection are the by-products of modernization and the relative stability that the past century afforded the Latin American countries examined in the volume: Argentina (two essays), Bolivia, Brazil (two essays), Colombia, Mexico, and Panama. The subject matter on the twentieth century is also diverse, ranging from an Argentinean soccer club established in 1904 to a popular sport imported to Brazil from Japan in 1979. After soccer, boxing is the most popular and nationally significant ... Read More

  • Commodifying Violence in Literature and on Screen: The Colombian Condition
           by Alejandro Herrero-Olaizola (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Commodifying Violence explores how the global cultural market has contributed to the dissemination and exploitation of Colombian violence for profit. It illustrates how many cultural producers privilege the darker side of human experience, thereby satisfying the demand coming from global audiences for the spectacularization of grittiness, marginalized subjects, and social inequality. Herrero-Olaizola refers to this phenomenon as the "Colombian condition"; it stands for the inescapability of delivering easily packaged forms of violence powered by market demands, because audiences worldwide prefer to consume stories that fetishize violence rather than explore its more subdued forms that require reflection and greater ... • Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño's Fiction and Poetry by J.
           Agustín Pastén B. (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • The City as Photographic Text: Urban Documentary Photography of São Paulo
           by David William Foster (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • The Walls of Santiago: Social Revolution and Political Aesthetics in
Contemporary Chile by Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In The Walls of Santiago, Terri Gordon-Zolov and Eric Zolov offer a bottom-up account of Chile from the estallido social (social explosion)—the wave of mass protests that rocked the South American country starting in October 2019—through the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic. To assess this four-month period in Chilean history, the authors, one a literary and gender studies scholar and the other a historian of twentieth-century Latin America, center their book on roughly 150 different works of street art that covered city walls around Santiago in late 2019 and early 2020. One of the authors' goals in focusing on these sources, including graffiti to posters, stencil art, murals, and "paste-ups," is to better ... Read More
