  • A History of Boxing in Mexico: Masculinity, Modernity and Nationalism by
           Stephen D. Allen (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this cultural history, Stephen D. Allen examines the careers of five legendary Mexican boxers: Rodolfo Casanova, Raúl Macías, Vicente Saldívar, Rubén Olivares, and José Nápoles. Beyond discussing their accomplishments in the ring, Allen explains how their biographies, careers, and personal behavior reflected popular conceptions of masculinity, modernity, and nationalism in the late twentieth century. To a greater extent than other public figures, boxers encouraged their countrymen "to tell tales of Mexican greatness when they performed admirably … and stories of Mexican stability when their performances … coalesced with mainstream notions of Mexican masculinity" (12). The success of these five pugilists against ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Cultural Nationalism and Ethnic Music in Latin America ed. by William H.
           Beezley (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The edited collection presents a broad overview of cultural nationalism by examining how it was initially forged in Latin America, noting both foreign and native influences in shaping the ethnic musical and cultural production of specific countries. Spanning twelve chapters, the book homes in on case studies regarding Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia; their respective ethnic-cultural influences are noted by sociohistorical processes, cultural campaigns, and social movements tied specifically to these countries. The ethnic diversity of these nations' musical origins is traced back to the colonial history of the Americas and distinguishes the various indigenous, African ... Read More

  • In Search of the Sacred Book: Religion and the Contemporary Latin American
           Novel by Aníbal González (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Despite more than three centuries of colonization coupled with a Catholic ascendancy in nearly every ideological facet of Latin America, some scholarly works tend to overlook the lingering effects and inherent presence of Christianity in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin American literature. As understandable as this inattention is, due to the countless destructive ramifications brought about by Western monarchies and contemporary secularization, Latin American authors still continued and continue to have direct and indirect religious exchanges and debates in their narrative productions. In Search of the Sacred Book by Aníbal González is a delightful and pioneering study that recognizes the significance of ... Read More

  • Portraits in the Andes: Photography and Agency 1900–1950 by Jorge
           Coronado (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Through a comprehensive analysis of the sociocultural practice of southern Andean studio portraiture, Jorge Coronado explores the implications of photographed indigenous and mestizos agents from the first half of the twentieth century (10). Utilizing an amalgamation of untitled transnational photographs from collections, museums and archives, located in cities such as La Paz, Cuzco, Huancavelica, and Huancayo, the overarching objective of Portraits in the Andes is to highlight the likely cultural discourse between photography and the lettered elite narrative. Many of the lower- to middle-class portraits examined in this study are ungoverned and were not included in the photographic projects of aristocrats ... Read More

  • "Times of Extreme Broadcasting": Argentine Socialism and Mass Culture
during the Rise of Commercial Radio (1920–1945)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The need to translate a complex system of ideas into something practical was one of the most difficult challenges of the Second International socialisms (1889–1916). The task was necessary, though, in order to enable the proletariat to take on the ideology as its own. Educational actions and dissemination were at the center of the strategies developed by political forces linked to socialism worldwide. The future society these forces struggled for was unthinkable without the commitment and active participation of the working class and "the people." On many occasions, this led different socialist leaders to see media and different expressions of mass culture like radio and cinema as enemies to their task of ... Read More

  • Body as Text: Challenging Marginalized Identities through Literary
           Performance in Contemporary Brazilian Saraus

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The transparent physicality of the body is a complex, nuanced interplay of social and cultural forces. The body is at once a highly local reflection, interacting in the here and now via face-to-face interactions. It is also equally generalizable as a mediator across cultures and physical space, having the capacity to transmit values, orientations, and functions across diverse social fields that are themselves inscribed and produced through the body. In the past decade, beginning in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, literary saraus have become spaces that reconceptualize public relationships to literature through bodily performances of living language that is dynamic and assessable. Saraus build consciousness and allow ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

           histórica en un contexto transcultural

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

           Córdoba, Argentina, 1970–1977

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

           telenovela La esclava blanca

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

... • The Tyrannical Mother in Mexican Telenovelas

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In its 2007 edition Studies in Latin American Popular Culture published my first article on the representation of maternity in telenovelas: "The Good and Bad Women of Telenovelas: How to Tell Them Apart Using a Simple Maternity Test." In that project I examine the characterization of the good and bad women, las buenas and las malas, of telenovelas vis-à-vis their relationship with motherhood. For those at all familiar with the glorification of maternity in Mexican culture and cultural expressions, it will come as no surprise that in those productions las buenas desire to be mothers above all else. Once the dream of motherhood is fulfilled, they view their purpose in life as that of being an ideal mother. By ... Read More

           futbol mexicano

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Juárez by Juan Carlos Ramírez-Pimienta (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More
