  • Tipas raras cargando un movimiento: Reggaetón, Decoloniality, and
           Knowledge Through Subversion

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The system of power created by hegemonic societies displaces, controls, and organizes colonial subjects. However, these subjects have always resisted. Oppressed people have developed alternative ways of interpreting their world, by creating and transmitting knowledge. Indigenous, Cuir (Spanish for Queer), Black, Femme, and other communities have used art in subversive ways to represent their realities and threaten the oppressive structures and notions of the hegemonic-normative system. Music has always been present in Puerto Rico as a tool to express and build resistance, from enslaved revolts and the use of la bomba puertorriqueña as a way to plan rebellions, and plena's telling stories to inform poor communities ...
           Rico

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • The Afro-Surinamese "Du" Dance and Song Theatre: A Historical Analysis in
           a Caribbean Context

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1817, a remarkable announcement appeared in the Surinaamsche Courant. Signed by a certain Modestus, the members of the "incomparable and excellent Amber Du" used the local newspaper to express their gratitude to "all their reputable benefactors" for "generously multiplying the splendor of its past feast."1 The Amber Du was one of dozens of associations composed of enslaved and free Afro-Surinamese in the nineteenth-century Dutch colony that organized satirical dance and song performances in Sranan, the local creole language. These Dus were led by a Sisi or Misi, a (generally manumitted) Black female, with whom a wealthy slaveholder lived in concubinage. The Sisi typically featured as guest of honor at ... Read More

  • Scripts of Sexual Ethics: Tensions and Violence With/In the Performance of
           Jamaican Citizenship

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The components assembled in this essay are anchored by a dance-like leap, where the dancer offers a fleeting glimpse of what it means to exist suspended between Earth and sky—a transitory moment that challenges the groundedness associated with the balance of feet on the floor. It is through the practice of leaping that we can depart from our accustomed perspectives in order to gain new ways of seeing. The leap embodied by this essay allows for an evaluation of the tragic intersections of colonial practices and homosexual desire in Jamaica in both creative and critical ways. The central figures contributing to the perception of homosexual desire as immoral in Jamaica have fostered a demoralizing relationship with ... Read More

  • Betancino hasta los tuétanos

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Jean-Pierre Sainton (1955-2023)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • Where the Man with the Hammer Gone' A Lament for Brinsley Samaroo

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: He was a boy from Ecclesville, and he entered Naparima College in the early 1950s. He stayed in the school's dormitory ("dormitry"), a place where boys from places a long way from San Fernando survived on skimpily buttered bread: caraille and bread; bread and red beans; ochro and bread; and for variety, bread soaked in the oil of slices of fried plantain. On days when there was meat at lunchtime, you had to rush into the dining room and secure the morsel on your plate, or spit on it to deter the bigger boys. The day-students were from San Fernando and its surroundings, included all the island's ethnic groups, and were much nearer to middle-class than were the Indian boys from the different country districts who ... • Michael Anthony: Writer, Cultural Historian, Educator, Friend

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Michael Anthony (February 10, 1932–August 24, 2023) was our oldest living writer and our most prolific. Between 1963 and 2020 he authored at least 33 books (one of which, The History of Aviation in Trinidad and Tobago [1967], I have not seen). He published poems and short stories in the Trinidad Guardian in the early 1950s before his departure for England in 1954. He published stories in the Barbados magazine Bim in the 1950s, and in the BBC's program Caribbean Voices, concentrating on short stories and other prose fictions. V.S. Naipaul, the program's editor at the time, had summoned him to the office and told him his stories were promising but please do not think of pursuing a career as a poet. We had good times ... • Eugenio María de Hostos: Praxis teatral by Anamín Santiago
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: En Hostos.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More
