  • From Refugees to Legitimate Minority' Rohingya Performing National
           Belongings in Thailand

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For decades, Rohingya have had to flee Arakan/Rakhine1 state in Myanmar because of military violence connected to the nation-building projects in South and Southeast Asia at the end of colonialism. While most people know about Rohingya residing in Bangladesh and Malaysia, few are aware that a sizeable Rohingya population has also settled in Thailand since the late 1970s. In this article, I focus on the Rohingya who found their way to and made a home in Thailand. I argue that through the Thai government’s approach to its own minorities and its restrictive policies and practices towards refugees in general, and the Rohingya in particular, the Rohingya community living in Thailand have de facto integrated into Thai ... • Representations of Malay Rurality and Bugis Village-Making in Malaysia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Anthropologists studying rural areas in Southeast Asia have moved on from earlier efforts to define a village1−its characteristics, livelihood, socio-culture and religious system—to redirect attention to rural space as a site of contestation between state and rural communities. Earlier anthropologists such as Firth (1966), Koentjaraningrat (1967), Jocano (1988) and Potter (1976) approached the study of rural people and rural places holistically through the social structure of villages. But the process of nation-making in Southeast Asia—which brought together the ideas of nationalism, assimilation, agrarian transformation and modernization—has reoriented the approach to rural studies.Southeast Asia provides a good ... • On Contested Territory: Điện Biên Phủ and the Making of Northwest
           Vietnam by Christian C. Lentz

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Before it became Northwest Vietnam, the Black River region was home to various ethnic groups, including a Tai majority whose elites ruled through a local system of rule, referred to as muang in Tai language. It was a region characterized by thriving production of commercial crops, connected to trade networks that overlapped with areas of what are now parts of China, Thailand and Laos. Tai domination was premised on the control of land and labour, rather than territory. On the other hand, modern states, including those emerging in the postcolonial period like the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), premise their sovereignty on territory. In Contested Territory: Điện Biên Phủ and the Making of Northwest Vietnam ... Read More

  • The Wa of Myanmar and China’s Quest for Global Dominance by Bertil
           Lintner (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: To date, Myanmar is the only country in Southeast Asia that is far from achieving nationhood. Ethnicity, conflict and military are tightly linked in Myanmar, creating a vicious cycle of violence, military rule and coups. The Tatmadaw’s coup d’état on 1 February 2021 demonstrates that Myanmar always has the ability to surprise the world. The coup has reshaped Myanmar’s conflict landscape. The ethnic armed groups have adopted a wide range of responses in the battle between the regime and its political opponents.Bertil Lintner’s latest book, The Wa of Myanmar and China’s Quest for Global Dominance, focuses on the Wa and presents a worthwhile study of the most powerful ethnic armed group in Myanmar. The author displays ... Read More

  • Home SOS: Gender, Violence, and Survival in Crisis Ordinary Cambodia by
           Katherine Brickell (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Arguably the most conceptually innovative monograph on Cambodia to emerge in the last ten years, Home SOS brings together two critical themes in contemporary research on Cambodia—namely, gender-based violence and forced eviction—within a common nexus of a displacement that is at once cultural, gendered and immutable. Scholars who focus on gender issues in Cambodia and those who have been attuned to corruption, governance and human rights will find common ground in Home SOS.Human geography lends itself to interdisciplinary research; Home SOS is an exemplar in this regard—drawing from gender studies, cultural studies and theories of displacement and violence. This is the latest monograph in the Royal Geographers ... Read More

  • Seaways and Gatekeepers: Trade and State in the Eastern Archipelagos of
Southeast Asia, c.1600–1906 by Heather Sutherland (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Seaways and Gatekeepers, Heather Sutherland tells the stories of the trading polities of Ternate (central Maluku), Gorontalo (northern Sulawesi), Ceram (central Maluku), Maguindanao and Sulu (southern Mindanao), Lombok (east of Bali), Sumba Island (west of Timor) and many other smaller polities that comprise the eastern archipelagos of Southeast Asia. She argues that if one sets aside the usual approaches of state-building and border formation, and looks at their histories along comparative lines, one could see that these polities played as important a role in the regional trade as Batavia, Manila, Manado, Penang and Bangkok. This ‘relational thinking’ therefore allows us to imagine a broader maritime Southeast ... Read More

  • Mandalay and the Art of Building Cities in Burma by François
           Tainturier (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Mandalay and the Art of Building Cities in Burma is a fascinating book, fluidly written, thoroughly researched and clearly structured around key arguments. The title, however, is slightly misleading as the book is largely focused on the founding protocol of the city of Mandalay over the years 1856–59. Readers interested in ‘profane’ urban studies should therefore not expect to find an extensive analysis of the political, social, ecological and economic processes that shaped urban development in the longue durée in Burma. The book is indeed primarily one of religious and cultural history, which will be better appreciated by readers with a background in humanities and notions of Buddhist canonical history and the ... • The Shop on High Street: At Home with Petite Capitalism by Souchou Yao
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Although the centrepiece of Souchou Yao’s book is his family’s shophouse on High Street in Kuala Lumpur, he separated ‘shop’ from ‘house’ in his book and chapter titles to afford himself some analytical distance. As noted in his preface, an autoethnography about his childhood home and himself might seem self-indulgent or overwrought with unsolicited emotions. Why should the plight of his family be published as an academic monograph' He answers this question aptly through an engaging story that simultaneously reveals the intimate life of the shophouse as both home and business and critiques the cultural constructs that have enabled this kind of family business to continue despite their emotional and financial ... • Conceptualizing the Malay World: Colonialism and Pan-Malay Identity in
           Malaya by Naoki Soda (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Soda’s Conceptualizing the Malay World is the first book-length effort in Malaysian studies to analyse the construction of the modern Malay world through the lens of colonial knowledge (pp. 1–4) as expounded by Cohn and applied by anthropologists and sociologists to the Malaysian context. But it would have been helpful if he had discussed what ‘colonial knowledge’ is and its difference from ‘colonial discourse’ to avoid the term colonial knowledge coined by Cohn. The following paragraphs should be helpful in distinguishing between the two.Discourse on the impact of colonialism in Malaysia’s historiography has been extensive both in academic as well as non-academic writing. But ‘colonial knowledge’ as a ... Read More

  • Unwritten Rule: State-Making through Land Reform in Cambodia by Alice
           Beban (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Cambodia’s integration into regional and global economies has accelerated the demand for land for real estate development and agricultural plantations. Rising land demand within the context of Cambodia’s poor property regimes has produced high incidents of land conflicts and land grabbing. In Unwritten Rule, Alice Beban situates data drawn from her extensive ethnographic fieldwork within an interdisciplinary literature to provide a thick description of the complexity of land conflicts in Cambodia. More specifically, the book focuses on the land titling programme—known as Order 01 or ‘leopard skin’ land reform—promulgated by Prime Minister Hun Sen in 2012.Order 01 surveys and issues land titles to rural Khmer and ... • Religious Tourism in Northern Thailand: Encounters with Buddhist Monks by
           Brooke Schedneck (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Tourism research on Chiang Mai is relatively nascent, having emerged only around twenty years ago following the trend of tourism research in Thailand. Most of the research has been undertaken by master’s students of the Graduate School, Chiang Mai University, and academics from the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Architecture, and the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, focusing mostly on topics such as tourism development, marketing strategies, ecotourism and the impacts of tourism. In recent years, however, there have been attempts to expand tourism research in Chiang Mai by incorporating interdisciplinary topics such as fine arts and ... Read More

  • Language, Resistance and Ambivalence in Chinese Malaysian Political Satire

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For Lunar New Year 2013, Malaysian opposition politician Teresa Kok posted her New Year’s greetings via two short satirical skits on YouTube. Employing a mix of spoken Cantonese and Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles, and typical Chinese New Year motifs of a new haircut and a family dinner, the humorous skits criticized government corruption and urged viewers (and voters) to ‘dare to try’ something new. In the 2013 Malaysian general elections that followed, opposition candidates won a majority of the popular vote for the first time since independence, even though the ruling party retained control of the government. Teresa Kok’s expanded 2014 Chinese New Year video, “Onederful Malaysia”, featured Teresa Kok ... Read More

  • Phantasmagorias of Violence in Thai and Filipino Drug Wars: Projecting
Police Drug Suppression through Media Spectacles in Southeast Asia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In a full-colour image by a Filipino freelance photographer covering President Duterte’s war on drugs, a bloody body lies in the middle of a broad Manila street. This image, purchased by the LA Times, shows a man who was killed by the police, his barefoot corpse partially hidden by rain, darkness and the homicide detectives standing over him. The photographer later described how, “[i]n the morning, if you shoot dead people, it’s gory, but at night it’s almost beautiful.… You can hide the blood, because of the shadows. It’s psychedelic, the colors” (Kaiman 2016). In the years before, another Southeast Asian drug war also led to the murders of thousands of ‘suspects’. A glossy issue of the Thai Top Cop magazine ... • Field Theory, Capitals, and the Development and Marketing of Condominiums
           in Bangkok

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The demand to live close to the mass transit rail systems in Bangkok is strong and growing (CBRE 2012, p. 6; Moore 2019, pp. 121–25), yet there is a lack of understanding about the dynamics of development around such locations and how it is shaped, particularly from the perspective of agents involved in these processes. A gap in knowledge in relation to the practices of developers and how they adapt to the contexts within which they are operating has been noted elsewhere (Mosselson 2020, p. 278). The aim of this research is thus to contribute to the literature by exploring the nature of condominium development in Bangkok around or close to mass transit stations. This paper focuses on the relative roles of the ... Read More
