  Abstract: Tutoring websites can facilitate and incentivize students to upload course materials in violation of syllabus and copyright policies. In a study investigating the prevalence of instructor-generated exam problems appearing online, 23.3% of all investigated problems appeared on tutoring websites, with those from an online graduate course appearing more frequently (74.7%) than traditionally-delivered undergraduate courses (11.2%). Reasons for this disparity as well as strategies to minimize this type of academic misconduct are presented.

  Abstract: Examples of applications of equilibrium-based methods for multicomponent separations usually require the use of simulation packages, which do not allow students to follow the involved algorithms step by step. Excel spreadsheets with examples of six such rigorous methods have been used with MSc students of Chemical Engineering of the University of Alicante (Spain), showing a significant enhancement of their ability to apply these methods.

  Abstract: Readers at ABET-accredited institutions may be familiar with General Engineering Program Criterion 5, which in part says that the curriculum shall contain “a culminating major engineering design experience that 1) incorporates appropriate engineering standards and multiple constraints[1].” Those of us who teach capstone design generally have little challenge in identifying problems that fully embrace the “multiple constants” part of this criterion, but some folks struggle a bit more with the “standards.” Chemical Engineering isn’t like Electrical, Mechanical, of Civil Engineering, where there are published standards that practically govern your morning tea (or at least the appropriate amperage and pressure of your electric kettle and the construction of the kitchen-cabinets in which the kettle is stored!)

  Abstract: Each summer over the past decade, the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Washington has hosted the “Distinguished Young Scholars Seminar” (DYSS) series, bringing outstanding research trainees from top-tier programs around the country for day-long campus visits filled with student discussions, faculty meetings, mock interview questioning, and a research seminar. Here, we discuss the history and evolving structure of DYSS, highlighting prior successes and lessons learned, as well as opportunities for ongoing improvement.

  Abstract: The development, testing, and classroom implementation of a low-cost, reproducible, desktop sized, highly visual double-pipe heat exchanger are presented. Quantitative measurements with the module reveal its usefulness for demonstrating basic and advanced convective heat transfer theory while worksheet-guided inquiries promote student engagement. Results from students’ conceptual and motivational assessments show the module and associated activities improve student conceptual understanding and student confidence and engagement.
