  • Hydrogen Trapping States and Apparent Hydrogen Diffusion in Laser
           Additively Manufactured Ultra-High Strength AerMet100 Steel as a Function
           of Secondary Hardening

      Abstract: Microstructures, reversible hydrogen trapping states, and effective hydrogen diffusion coefficients (DH,eff) of laser additively manufactured (LAM) ultra-high-strength AerMet100 steel in tempered conditions were studied by several material characterization methods, to determine diffusible, trapped, and total hydrogen content. With secondary hardening temperatures in the range of 454°C to 566°C, increasing temperature mainly promotes M2C carbide coarsening and film-like reverted austenite thickening in the steel. Reversible hydrogen traps of tempered LAM AerMet100 steel are closely related to the precipitation behavior of highly coherent M2C carbides. The desorption activation energy of the reversible hydrogen traps in the steel is seen to increase from 17.9±0.3 kJ/mol to 21.8±1.3 kJ/mol with temperature increasing from 454°C to 566°C. This correlates with the composition and size change of M2C carbides at a higher tempering temperature. Hydrogen trapping capability of the steel has a peak value at a tempering temperature of 482°C corresponding to the combination of both high amount and medium trapping intensity of these reversible hydrogen traps. This results in the lowest diffusible and highest total hydrogen concentration for precharged H specimens of the steel. In addition, the DH,eff of LAM AerMet100 steel in the overaged condition is not only influenced by the increased thickness of film-like reverted austenite but also simultaneously affected by the altered density of M2C carbides. In comparison with the lowest DH,eff (approximately 2.4 × 10−9 cm2/s) of LAM AerMet100 steel tempered at 482°C, a slightly higher DH,eff of the steel tempered at a higher temperature is achieved by the apparent decrease of reversible hydrogen traps due to a decrease in density of the highly coherent M2C carbides. These findings are important when considering achieving improved hydrogen embrittlement resistance for LAM high Co-Ni secondary hardening ultra-high-strength steel in an over-aged condition at the strength level of interest.

  • Three-Body Abrasion-Corrosion Behavior of As-Printed and Solution-Annealed
           Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel

      Abstract: Selective laser melting (SLM) or powder bed fusion is a type of additive manufacturing technology with applications in, e.g., the orthopedics, energy, and aerospace industries. Several studies investigated the localized corrosion behavior of SLM-fabricated Type 316L (UNS S31603) stainless steel. However, little is known about the effects of tribocorrosive conditions on the response of stainless steels fabricated by SLM. In this study, the effects of third-body abrasive particles on the tribo-electrochemical behavior of SLM 316L stainless steel produced by SLM were investigated and compared with wrought counterparts (including UNS S31703, 317W) in 0.6 M NaCl. It was found that the presence of Mo played a more decisive role in the tribocorrosion behavior than the manufacturing method, i.e., 317W revealed the best tribocorrosion behavior vis-a-vis wrought 316L and the SLM-fabricated specimens. The improved tribocorrosion behavior contrasted with the much higher breakdown potential of the SLM-fabricated samples. Nano-scale secondary ion mass spectroscopy was used to investigate the effects of Mo on passivity. The implications of passivity and tribocorrosion behavior are discussed.

  • Effect of 3.5 wt% NaCl and Cathodic Charging on the Atomic Strain
           Distribution of a Plastically Deformed AA 7004

      Abstract: The effects of environments in altering the atomic strain distribution in AA 7004 while subjected to slow strain rate testing to environmentally assisted cracking are investigated. Two different temper conditions—one where predominantly G.P. zones are present and the other with predominantly η′/η precipitates were chosen for the present study. Three different test environments—glycerol (Gly), 3.5 wt% NaCl (OCP), and 3.5 wt% NaCl with 100 mV cathodic charging vs. open-circuit potential (CP) were used. Under the above environmental conditions, the alloy aged at 140°C for 24 h, containing predominantly G.P. zones, showed the existence of the tensile nonshear components of the strain. On the other hand, the alloy aged at 140°C for 48 h, containing predominantly η′/η precipitates, showed only one of the two nonshear strain components that were tensile in nature, with a simultaneous reduction in the shear component of strain. The work highlights that the effects of the environment on the deformation behavior of the alloy are evident by way of alterations in strain distribution at the atomic level, which could possibly explain the increase in dynamic recovery for the microstructure containing primarily the G.P. zones, and the decrease in dynamic recovery for microstructures consisting predominantly of η′/η precipitates.

  • The Transition from Short- to Long-Term Marine Corrosion of Carbon Steels:
           1. Experimental Observations

      Abstract: This paper is concerned with developing an understanding of the transition between modes 1 and 2 of the bi-modal characteristic often observed for corrosion (mass) loss of many different alloys and in a variety of longer-term (years) exposure conditions. Corrosion losses and pit depth and size for carbon steels (0.01 wt%, 0.04 wt%, and 0.06 wt% C) immersed continuously in sheltered 20°C (av.) seawater, 30°C (constant) seawater, and 70°C (constant) distilled water environments are reported with observations at 14 d and 28 d intervals over 1.4 y. The data allow clear demonstration of bi-modal behavior and variability in mass loss much less than typical for unprotected environments. All cases showed significant development of pit depths and pit areas particularly later in mode 1, through the transition phase and into mode 2. Using established observations of pitting mechanisms, the development of pitting is interpreted as facilitating the reduction in pH at the corrosion interface that permits the cathodic reaction to change from oxygen reduction in mode 1 to hydrogen evolution in mode 2, consistent with longer-term predominantly anaerobic corrosion in the later part of the bi-modal model. The observations also shed some light on the relationship between pitting corrosion and what is conventionally referred to as uniform corrosion.

  • Corrosion Behavior of Weathering Steels with Different Contents of Rare
           Earth Elements La and Ce

      Abstract: The effects of different contents of rare earth (RE) elements Ce and La on the corrosion behavior of weathering steel Q355NHq were investigated with alternate immersion tests and electrochemical measurements. The corrosion rates were lowest with the rusted steels containing 170 ppm RE elements. Aspex analysis showed that steels with the RE elements content of 170 ppm had the greatest percentage of inclusions with high content of RE elements. The immersion tests showed that modified inclusions with a high percentage of (RE)xOy exhibited a better corrosion resistance than CaS-Al2O3 inclusion. Compared with steels containing no more than 90 ppm RE, the rust layers of steels containing 170 ppm RE elements were compact and contained high amounts of α-FeOOH and low amounts of γ-FeOOH. Based on the results obtained, the influence of the different contents of RE elements in weathering steel corrosion is discussed.

  • Hydrogen Permeation in FeCrAl APMT Alloy for Accident Tolerant Fuel
           Cladding

      Abstract: Iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys such as APMT (advanced powder metallurgy tubing) are candidate materials to replace zirconium alloys for the light water reactor fuel cladding. This alloy meets the requirements to be a material more tolerant of high-temperature accidents than the current zirconium alloys. One concern is that the use of FeCrAl may result in an increase in tritium presence in the coolant compared to the current design. The aim of the current research was to obtain effective diffusion coefficients (Deff) for hydrogen through APMT using the Devanathan-Stachurski cell. Results showed that at 30°C the Deff value was 2.8 × 10−8 cm2/s. Results also showed a linear relationship between the permeated hydrogen flux and the inverse of the test specimen thickness, which demonstrated the validity of the permeation measurements.

  • Failure Forecasting of Corroding Bridge Post-Tensioned Tendons

      Abstract: Post-tensioning has evolved to become an important design and construction method for reinforced concrete bridges. However, corrosion-caused tendon failures on such structures have occurred and these, in turn, compromise integrity. In response to this, a previous research program developed an analytical methodology that projects the progression of wire and strand fractures and bridge tendon failures based upon corrosion rate statistics for wires. A remaining challenge, however, is to better understand the effectiveness and accuracy of existing technologies for in situ bridge tendon condition assessment, as well as the development of new and improved approaches. The present research builds upon this need by establishing quantitative relationships between the extent of corrosion damage to wires and strands and residual tendon strength. Most analyses are based upon a mean corrosion rate of 0.075 mmpy (3.0 mpy) with standard deviation 0.3, 0.4, or 0.5. As a forewarning of a pending tendon failure, the present study identifies the percentage of wire/strand section loss at 1 y and 5 y prior to failure.
