  • Comparative Analysis of Methods for Calculating the Discharge Process in a
           Positive-Displacement Pump

      Abstract: By analyzing the indicator diagram of a positive-displacement pump, it is shown that the key step in the cycle is the discharge process, whose accurate calculation thus becomes of great importance. A literature review reveals two main approaches to calculating the discharge process to be established. From a discussion of their physical meaning, simultaneous equations for their implementation were derived. A numerical experiment disclosed a discrepancy in determining dynamic pressure, calculating the fluid amount supplied per process, and evaluation of the work losses. Based on the research results, it is recommended to calculate the discharge process using simultaneous equations.

  • Stochastic Analysis of Rotary Mixing of Polymer Components in the
           Framework of Recycling and Development of 3D-Printing Technologies

      Abstract: Based on the proposed stochastic model for the formation of rarefied flows, an analysis of the first stage of rotary mixing of polymer secondary and primary components using a three-row blade sprayer at the preliminary stage of the injection molding machine operation has been carried out. The most significant factors influencing the degree of efficiency of indicated rotary mixing have been established. It is shown that for the maxima of the corresponding differential distribution functions of the number of particles of polymer components, the extreme values of the scattering angles approach each other. In particular, the ratio of these angles for primary and secondary polypropylene corresponds to a value of 1.2.

  • Sources for Helium-3 Isotope Extraction and Prospects of its Development

      Abstract: The article considers the current problem of helium-3 supply constraints for industry and science. The projected 3He shortage is approximately 55000 liters (at 1 atm and 20°С) in the world production market. Tritium is the only industrial 3He source. Alternative sources of 3He are discussed in this paper. Between 25 and 50% of the 3Не shortage could be addressed with natural gas extraction. To obtain high purity 3He gas, low-temperature methods of separation (superfluid filtration, rectification and adsorption) are promising. The 3He lunar mining operation could cover the entire worldwide shortage, but this is not a perspective over the next fifteen-twenty years. The controlled thermonuclear fusion is both an energy source and a new 3He production alternative source. Between 10 and 25% of the 3He shortage could be covered with this technology. The high molar concentration of 3He in the obtained mixtures will make it possible to extract the rare isotope by the method of low-temperature adsorption with subsequent enrichment by the method of low-temperature rectification.

  • Effect of the Degree of Plastic Deformation on Hardness of Austenitic
           Steel

      Abstract: A diagram of hardness change in 12KH18N10T austenitic steel depending on relative compression strain has been obtained. The relationship between the hardness of austenitic steel subjected to various degrees of compressive plastic strain (using the example of steel 12KH18N10T) and ultimate tensile strength was revealed. It is experimentally shown that, for this grade of austenitic steel depending on the degree of its compression strain, the proportionality coefficient κ in the empirical dependence σu = κ · HB is in the range from 0.36 to 0.38 following annealing.

  • Study of the Effect of Seawater on the Microhardness of the Surface Layer
           of Carbon Steels Subjected to Combined EMP+SPD Hardening Treatment

      Abstract: The corrosion behavior of the surface white layer of various grades of steels subjected to combined hardening by electromechanical processing and final surface plastic deformation (EMP+SPD) is investigated. The characteristic features of the distribution of microhardness in the hardened surface of steels 40X, 55, 60C2A following exposure in a model solution of sea salt are considered. It was found that the microhardness of the surface hardened EMP+SPD steel samples depends on the content of carbon and alloying elements of the parent metal. The corrosion resistance of the surface layer of samples made of steel 40X and steel 55, strengthened by EMP+SPD, is 2–3 times higher than that of samples made of steel 60S2A. It was found that alloying steel with silicon in a concentration of 1.6–2% worsens the corrosion resistance of the white layer, while alloying with chromium 0.8–1.1% retains resistance to seawater for 1440 hours.

  • Analysis of Industrial LNG Production Technologies

      Abstract: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an economical form of storage and transportation of natural gas. The demand for LNG is increasing steadily and the infrastructure for its supply is developing as the LNG market expands. This paper reviews the LNG production technologies in terms of their production capacity. The main LNG production volumes (85–90%) are concentrated at large-capacity plants located in coastal areas or at floating plants. In current conditions, new strategies are needed for implementing LNG projects based on medium- and small-capacity plants that can better meet new market demand. Through construction of several lines, they can achieve the production volumes of large-capacity projects. Medium- and small-capacity LNG plants mean modularity, factory assembly, shorter plant construction time, and possibility of development of marginal wells and alternative sources of methane-containing gas. The main advantage of LNG is the possibility of recovering up to 40% of the energy spent on liquefaction during the regasification process. Natural gas contains small amounts of heavy inert gases, which are enriched during the liquefaction process. The development of a technology for extracting Kr and Xe from natural gas is a promising area of further research.

  • Evaluation of the Efficiency of Fluoropolymer Gaskets Taking Cold Flow

      Abstract: The sealing and relaxation characteristics of fluoroplast-4 gaskets are studied. It is established that, at the same specific pressure, the use of wider gaskets can increase sealing of the working pressure by about 25%. The influence of the stress level and time on the value of the relaxation modulus is also studied. A safety coefficient is proposed that takes the relaxation of specific pressures into account. Results of a control experiment conducted to assess the adequacy of the relaxation model are presented along with practical recommendations.

  • Investigation of Efficiency of Various Designs of Devices for Feed Input
           into Mass-Transfer Columns Using CFD Analysis

      Abstract: A comparative analysis of various designs of devices for feed input into fractionating columns was made using CFD modeling. The feed supply rate at which special feeding devices are not required was determined. A comparative estimation was made of the separation zone height and hydraulic resistance at various feed supply rates for various designs of feed input devices as well as for hollow columns (without a feed input device). The proportion of feed distillation was found to affect the performance indices of various feed input devices.

  • Modernization of a High-Performance Electrostatic Precipitator

      Abstract: The article presents the results of studies of the flow patterns in an electrostatic precipitator using computer modeling systems. Significant flow inhomogeneities observed in the existing pattern are shown to result in a decrease in the efficiency of dust collection. Recommendations are proposed for the modernization of the inlet and outlet gas ducts in order to equalize the volumetric flow density in the operating area.

For a comparative analysis of the plants, the Carnot and Novikov efficiency criteria, thermal and exergy efficiency, specific work per kilogram of liquefied natural gas, as well as the newly proposed calculated effective efficiency have been used. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of characteristic fields, which can be used to significantly increase the accuracy of calculations and reduce the time for design and refinement of the low-temperature power plant being created (the values of efficiency and specific work are refined by 30-50% compared to the pre-design estimate according to Novikov). The proposed technique for using the library of characteristic fields in the methodological complex of calculation and design of low-temperature power plants allows significantly reducing the development time and bringing the calculated characteristics of the designed power plant as close as possible to the real ones.
