  • Art Forgers and the Deconstruction of Genius

    • Authors: Jeffrey Taylor
Abstract: On February 23, 2014, 60 Minutes aired an exposé on the German art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi, and it spurred a national conversation as to why his paintings were any less good than the autograph works he imitated. After all, his fakes had been exhibited at the Metropolitan and sold at Christie’s, and elite collectors happily enjoyed them as if they were authentic. Since the art market’s inception, art forgery has been a constant presence. The phenomenon derives from the market’s prioritization of canonical masters, and the art forgers work serves to directly undermine that hierarchy. This paper would address the portrayals of the art forger and attribution questions in literature, film, and television, and how they serve to validate the general public’s scepticism in the unique genius of the anointed canonical masters. Starting with Hilaire Beloc’s The Missing Masterpiece from the 1920s, which comically reworked the early twentieth century’s first great attribution trial, that of the two versions of La Belle Ferronnière , this novel centers on a trial over a modernist masterpiece that cannot be distinguished from its copies. The story features thinly veiled sendups of two of the era’s dominant figures, Joseph Duveen and Bernard Berenson. Perhaps the single greatest institutional critique of the genius artist was achieved by the Hungarian Elmyr de Hory, who faked the key figures of the École de Paris, Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani. Elmyr’s works entered the collections of museums and were sold by Knoedler. They only became known, however, when Clifford Irving published his biography, Fake! The Story of Elmyr De Hory, the Greatest Art Forger of Our Time in 1969. Irving’s subsequent imprisonment for producing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes inspired Orson Welles, himself a master of illusion, to create his last film F for Fake, about the pair. The film ends, however, with an entirely concocted narrative of Picasso and a beautiful young model who markets her grandfather’s works as his. The fabricated conversation between Picasso and his model returns to the question of whether, if the public enjoyed the works as if they were Picassos, why does it matter that they were not' A variation of that same narrative would appear in The Simpsons 15th episode of season 25, “The War of Art," where a discovered masterpiece by Johan Oldenveldt turns out, when they travel to his island home (a clear reference to Elmyr’s home on Ibiza), to be a forgery by Klaus Ziegler. A conversation ensues that directly imitates the conversation at the end of F for Fake. Again, the question is raised, why does it matter if the work is by the master if the public believes it is, and they enjoy it as such'

  • Three views of a saleroom. Valorization in and valuation of visual
artworks by (mostly) Watteau, Altman and Banksy

    • Authors: Michael Hutter
Abstract: In the European tradition, markets have usually been represented as the place where the actual, live exchanges take place. The article therefore focuses on saleroom representations.
These affect their own artistic value in two ways, leading to two questions: in a first move, the saleroom is an artistic device. How does the artist, or those who collaborate in creating an
artwork, use references to a saleroom in order to put value into the work, to enrich it and thus contribute to its valorization' In a second move, spectators attribute value to the work, and
they assess its value in comparison with that of other, similar works, and they pay money to possess works. How do they react to the use of the saleroom, what part does it play in their
valuation of a particular work' To explore these questions, three works were selected: Antoine Watteau’s Shopsign of the art dealer Gersaint is a fictitious version of the dealer’s showroom; Robert Altman’s film Vincent and Theo opens with the Christie’s auction sale of one of Van Gogh’s Vase with sunflowers paintings and goes on to recapitulate the relationship between Vincent and his brother Theo; Banksy’s 2006 canvas version of Girl with Balloon, half-shreddered during its Sotheby’s auction sale and renamed Love is in the Bin, was applauded as the first artwork to be created during an auction event. Salerooms, however, show only one part of art markets. The conditions of production as well as the drives that shape consumption remain unnoticed. They would require other forms of representation and conceptualization. Salerooms are also an unlikely conceptual device to show features of political domination. And yet, the three works contain quite explicit references to this sphere of value.

  • "Twice as valuable as that of Eumorphopulos and twice as famous..." (Vita
Sackville-West, All Passion Spent, 1931) - The real and imaginary world of
           the Chinese art collector

    • Authors: Nick Pearce
Abstract: The period between about 1900 and 1937 witnessed the opening up of an international market in Chinese artefacts at a time when China was vulnerable to encroachment and, after 1911 with the fall of the last imperial dynasty, was in political, social and economic turmoil. During the post-WW1 decades the visibility of the country and its cultural history also stimulated an academic and popular interest in Chinese material culture of all types and periods, but particularly burial objects being unearthed through railway construction (bronzes, jades and ceramics), which initiated both legal and illegal excavations and the market circulation of collections formerly owned by the Chinese élite. These opportunities to 'collect' ended only with the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, when access to China was severely curtailed. In this article, I will focus on the way in which the visibility of these collectors impacted upon popular culture of the inter-war period, particularly the novel. Referencing actual collectors against their fictional counterparts offers an intriguing insight into character, motivation and the market for Chinese works of art at the time. Indeed the eccentricity and flamboyance of a number of real collectors made them ideal material for the writers of fiction.

  • Through a Screen, Darkly: Exploring Media Representations of the Art
           Market during 2010-2019

    • Authors: Claudia Quinones Vila
Abstract: Over the past decade, since the 2008 economic recession, the art market has undergone a seismic shift. On the one hand, as of 2018 the global art market currently represents a $67.4 billion share of the economy. On the other hand, self-regulation has been largely ineffective, with calls for greater transparency and concerns over antiquities looting, money laundering, and terrorism financing at the forefront of ongoing discussions. Amidst these changes, interest in the art market across all levels of society has grown and media depictions of the art market have become more prevalent. These depictions have many themes. For instance: Black Panther comments on the restitution of African artifacts taken during the colonial period; Woman in Gold depicts the legal battle over artwork taken by the Nazis in WWII while The Monuments Men focuses on the role played by Allied troops in safeguarding and restituting cultural treasures; Blood and Treasure covers antiquities looting in the Middle East; Riviera demonstrates the link between the mega-rich, contemporary art, money laundering, and private foundations; Velvet Buzzsaw skewers critics and dealers alike in the art fair and gallery scene; Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery and Art of the Heist are among several documentaries covering criminal aspects of the art world; the mockumentary Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable accompanied Damien Hirst’s exhibition of the same name; and so forth. There is even an episode of Drunk History with a humorous version of the infamous robbery at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. This article will explore the ways media depictions of the art market from 2008 to the present overlap with reality, as well as how and why the two differ. In particular, I am interested in analyzing the perspectives of insiders versus outsiders due to the art market’s recent popularity with non-market participants; i.e., “becoming mainstream.” Both fictional and non-fictional media projects exude a certain allure, even when portrayals are unflattering; but there are also exaggerated aspects that expose preoccupations with participants’ behavior and the market itself. By examining these representations, I aim to illustrate how the art market has permeated global social consciousness and what this tells us about its future and ongoing evolution.

  • (Con)Artistic Strategies for How to Succeed in the Art Market

    • Authors: Bernd Friedrich Schon
Abstract: In today’s fast-paced art market environment, uncertainty is rampant as to whether works of art are of lasting value, especially contemporary ones. In popular imagination, this gives rise to the fear that many an artist could be nothing more than an impostor who is primarily interested in enriching himself. Within cultural representation, so the artist’s "authenticity“ and "originality” become the most important resources for building trust. The examination of Orson Welles‘ F for Fake and Banksy’s Exit through the Gift Shop shows how artists articulate their own authenticity, originality credibility, and thus their trustworthiness – and how they distinguish themselves to counterfeiters, impostors, and fraudsters. Furthermore, it becomes obvious that both artists and impostors – at least as they’re represented –  (have to) use similar strategies in order to be successful. Both films also reveal tectonic changes in the art market from the 1970s until today: whereas in the past market access used to be achieved exclusively via experts and specialists who had to be convinced or deceived by means of outstanding craftmanship, their influence on the contemporary art market now appears to have diminished. Instead, the purposeful generation of attention through spectacle, the intelligent utilization of social relationships to key figures and the skilful manipulation of the media have become indispensable. This results in the fact that art forgers now can sell their own “original” and “authentic” forgeries at notable prices.
