  • Seperatist Movement In The Process Of Nation Building

    • Authors: Hadza Min Fadhli ROBBY
Abstract: This paper would like to discuss how the separatist movement in Chechnya and Aceh developed and grew during the process of nation-building. This paper found that the Chechen and Aceh separatism was grown out of ethno-religious sentiments and the autocratic policy of the central government. Finally, Chechnya and Aceh had different ways to solve the problem of separatism. Russian government approaches the Chechen separatism issue by “Chechenizing” the issue. However, the Indonesian government used a more holistic approach by opening political channels to all of the parties involved during the conflict to finally agree on a new system.

  • Taxation of Performing Arts or Film Screenings in The Ottoman’s
           Istanbul (1908-1914)

    • Authors: Özlem POYRAZ
Abstract: This article has two aims. The first purpose is to reveal the types of taxes collected from modern performing arts and film screenings, and the other is to determine the prevalence of performing arts and film screenings in Istanbul. Lubiyyat has been preferred for screening activities, and lubiyyat companies have been preferred for these companies. The Ottoman society has acquainted with theatrical performances before the film screenings. However, unlike theater, a serious technological infrastructure had been needed for film screenings. Although there were difficulties in providing this technological infrastructure, the Ittihad Terakki government supported the establishment of these companies and did not prevent the execution of their activities. During World War I, while the number of theater performances decreased, the number of film screenings increased. The government understood the power of the screenings and then established the Military Office of Cinema (MOC) in 1915. Thus, it was started to film production by the empire for the first time. Foreign companies and non-Muslims have performed almost all of the screenings in the Ottoman Empire. However, the empire had troubles in collecting the tax payments from foreign companies due to the capitulations. The tax inequality between domestic and foreign companies was eliminated by the abolition of capitulations. It is found that Stamp and Profits taxes and Hejaz Railway and Hospice aids were received from the companies and Istanbul turned out to be the art center of its era.

  • The Last Witnesses of The Tradition And The Children Intergenerational
Spiritual Empowerment Training Program An Example of Application with
           Primary School Fourth Graders

    • Authors: Esra AYDINBAŞ
Abstract: This study describes the Intergenerational Spiritual Empowerment Training Program as an original example of intergenerational learning programs in schools and discusses the effects of the program on children. The 12-session program, developed based on the Taba-Tyler model, has been designed with a value-centered approach. The program is an example of the designs that rely on social problems and reconstructions with a view to restructuring and reinforcing traditional and cultural values by focusing on the ignored needs of changing society, and it constitutes a proposal for the policies that will be developed in line with our cultural codes against social isolation and intergenerational deprivation. The effects of the Intergenerational Spiritual Empowerment Training Program, first implemented at a primary school and nursing home, on children were assessed in terms of resilience and humanitarian values and, at the same time, its effects on children were assessed based on humanitarian values, family ties, and their perception on different generations. The research was designed as a mixed-methods study, an experimental design was adopted for its quantitative dimension, and the study group of 61 children who attended the fourth grade of primary school was divided into experimental and control groups. Before and after the implementation of the program for the experimental group, both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests. Phenomenological model was adopted for the qualitative dimension of the study, and the data obtained through semistructured interviews and document analysis were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Changes to the concepts of children not only show that the program has created an intergenerational similarity in terms of values but also signify a positive development for children as regards their humanitarian values and perceptions about family and intergenerational relations. In the light of these findings, the program is of critical importance for the contributions it will make to the process of cultural transfer and social harmony.

  • Addiction Typologies of Adolescents Using Substance In The Process of
           Migration and Urban Adaptation

    • Authors: Fatma ŞENCAN; Kadir CANATAN
Abstract: The individual and social effects of the problems that develop due to the misuse of addictive substance are getting deeper. The greatest danger that awaits people using these substances is the risk of addiction to the substance used over time. Studies on substance addiction show that the extent of the danger is not limited to users, and that non-users are also affected by this problem in different ways. The fact that larger masses are affected negatively increases the importance of studies aimed at understanding the nature and development of addiction. The aim of this study is to reveal the addiction typologies of adolescents who live in neighborhoods shaped by migration and who have made substance use an indispensable part of their life. In order to reveal these typologies, 13 cases of substance use in adolescence who dropped out from the school were interviewed, and how individuals interpreted the individual and environmental factors influencing their use of stuff in their own worlds were examined. The meanings attributed to the concept of addiction and the communication expressions they use among the cases were determined as one of the focal points of the study. As a result of the research, it was seen that individuals identify the substance they depend on with the most indispensable values in their lives while defining addiction. In addition, it was understood that they attribute different meanings to some idioms and expressions that are also used in folk language in order to communicate among themselves and thus develop a special terminology specific to the addiction subculture. Furthermore, in this study four main addiction typologies were determined that direct adolescents to the substance use, namely Family, Peer, Family-Peer, Relationship.

           Movements

    • Authors: İhsan KONAK
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the context of new social movements. First of all, the theoretical framework of the new social movements and the reasons for the "new" characterization compared to the traditional "old" social movements are put forward. Then, the emergence and development process of the Black Lives Matter movement is covered. At this point, the role of social networks in the development of the movement is examined. The different aspects of the BLM movement, which emerged as a twitter hash tag, from other black freedom movements, the perception of BLM in the American public and the impact of BLM on the American public are evaluated. • Authors: Kürşat SARUHAN
Abstract: Are “War” and “Technology” concepts that affect each other' How much of the technologies we use today do we owe to the concept of war' How much has the existence of the concept of war contributed to the advancement of technology' Would American scientists have worked so hard on radar systems if there had been no nuclear threat in the Cold War' Wasn't the first goal of the invention of GPS, which has an important place in our lives, to increase the hit rate of missiles' Or vice versa, how much has the advancement of technology changed the concept of war' How did the invention of steam engines change the fate of war' How did the invention of communication tools such as the telegraph, radio and internet affect the nature of war' From the invention of iron to the invention of the internet, we can generate thousands of questions to reveal the context between the concepts of war and technology. • Perceptions of Bosnian Students’ of Turkey and Turkish Culture

    • Authors: Mirsad KARIC; Esref Kenan RASİDAGİC, Recai AYDIN
Abstract: Perceptions about other nations or countries are generally formed and shaped by historical events, cultural differences, beliefs and often prejudices and they are difficult to change overtime. Turkey, as a country with big goals and aspirations as well as a natural interest in the region because of its historic ties with the region, would like to strengthen its image and its relations with Balkan countries. In order to reach this goal, Turkey has poured substantial amount of money and resources to the region in last twenty years. This study aimed to investigate if the efforts of Turkey worked and were able to attract the hearts and minds of the young generation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in five major state universities of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019. The results show that religion and ethnicity still play an important role in forming the perceptions. According to survey results, Bosniaks or Bosnian Muslims heavily favor Turkey and are more interested in Turkish culture while Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats are not very comfortable with Turkish involvement in Bosnia and they feel suspicious about the motives of Turkey in the region. The results also indicate that Bosnian Serbs and Bosnian Croats feel that Turkey discriminates in its efforts, and mostly focuses on the Bosniaks.

  • Testing the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis: A Comparative
Empirical Study for Islamic and Non-Islamic Emerging Economies

    • Authors: Mervan SELÇUK; Şakir GÖRMÜŞ, Murat GÜVEN
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the relationships between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, trade openness, and urbanization within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for 11 Islamic and 11 non-Islamic Emerging Economies in the period of 1990-2018. For this purpose, the long-term relationship between variables are investigated for both country groups using MG, AMG, and CCEMG estimators. The results show that the effect of energy consumption on CO2 is significantly positive in both country specific and panel results. In non-Islamic emerging economies, there is significantly positive relationship between urbanization and CO2 for most country specific and panel results whereas the effect of urbanization on CO2 is significantly negative for most country specific and panel results in Islamic emerging economies. The effect of trade openness on CO2 is significantly negative in most Islamic and non-Islamic emerging economies. In panel results, the effect of trade openness on CO2 is significantly negative in non-Islamic emerging economies while it is insignificantly negative in Islamic emerging economies. The country specific results within the framework of the EKC hypothesis show that the EKC hypothesis is valid for Malaysia and Kuwait in Islamic emerging economies as well as Argentina, China, and Thailand in non-Islamic emerging economies for all models. The panel results represent that the EKC hypothesis is not valid for Islamic emerging economies in all models while valid for non-Islamic emerging economies in MG and AMG models.
