  • Do Astrological Beliefs Reflects Systematic Bias in Personality
           Measurement'

    • Authors: Gözde BOZKURT; Ahmet ÇİLİNGİRTÜRK
Abstract: Personality is a complex concept specified by many factors and separated from character concept in many ways. Astrology is an ancient study that involves classifications based upon the zodiac and regarded now as a pseudo-science. In this study, aim was to investigate the effect of the astrological personality on the personality characteristics, which were measured by the Five Factor Personality Model. The research studies finding that the pre-scientific beliefs had an effect on personality measuremets, motivates to accept the astrological groupings as a factor on explaining the personality and trait. The significant effects indicates either a direct reasoning or a systematic bias without questioning the belief of respondent.

  • The Determinants of Turkey Household Catastrophic Health Expenditures: A
           Different Approach by Data Mining

    • Authors: Uğur ERCAN
Abstract: This study aims to determine socioeconomic, demographic, and household characteristics that affect Turkish household catastrophic health expenditure (CHE). Data gathered by TurkStat belonging to 40,033 households for the years 2009-2012 were used in the analysis. In the study, CHE was defined as household health expenditures that were 40% (or above) greater than the capacity pay of the household. CHAID analysis was used to determine characteristics affecting Turkish household CHE. According to the CHAID analysis; income, presence of a sick/disabled person, residential area, household size, age, education level and gender of the household head, presence of individuals aged 65+, presence of people between the ages of zero and five, and access to health institutions have been observed to affect CHE, while the marital status, age, and employment status of the head of the household, or the household type do not affect CHE. The proportion of households exposed to CHE was 0.62%, and the proportion of households making out-of-pocket health expenditure (OOPHE) was 62.71%. It was especially observed that households with low income, with sick/disabled individuals, and those with difficult access to healthcare facilities are more likely to be exposed to CHE. None of the households exposed to CHE has supplementary health insurance.

  • Transition to Autonomous Vehicles: A Socio-Technical Transition
           Perspective

    • Authors: Fatih CANITEZ
Abstract: This paper reviews the autonomous vehicle (AV) trials around the world and proposes a socio-technical transition (multi-level perspective) approach for facilitating the adoption of AVs in countries. Built on a comprehensive literature review and a review of ongoing AV trials and tests around the world, this paper utilizes both theoretical and empirical approaches in understanding the dynamics of AV adoption. Three AV transition models (government support, industry push and public transport oriented) are proposed to help countries introduce and adopt AVs as part of their transport systems. The findings and insights are also aimed to help Turkey’s efforts to introduce AVs.

  • A Game Theoretical Approach to Conjoint Analysis

    • Authors: Tutku TUNCALI YAMAN; Özgür ÇAKIR
Abstract: The aim of the study is to combine the results of Conjoint Analysis, which is frequently used to determine customer preferences in marketing and market research areas, with Game Theory as suggested in the article of Choi and DeSarbo (1993). In this context, the application of the proposed approach was made within the framework of the factors affecting private university preferences of university candidates and the marketing decisions of school administrations. Student preferences were determined by the choice-based conjoint analysis method. As a result of a study conducted with 296 prospective students who were in the selection process after the 2016 university entrance exams. The reasons for preference in order of importance were determined as the availability of the program to be studied, the academic reputation of the school, and campus facilities. The data related to the characteristics of university managements care in their marketing activities obtained from the interviews with the school administrators and the data obtained from the Conjoint Analysis of students’ reasons for preference were used as input in the payoff matrix organized in the context of Game Theory, and the solution of the game was completed as a two-person zero-sum game. As a result of the application of the method with empirical data, it is observed that how student preferences will change when the weights of strategic marketing factors change in the decisions taken by school administrations from the business point of view. In addition, with the help of this approach and by obtaining competitor data, it allows to describe the situation of the market in general and to make a comparative evaluation of each university on its own.

  • Determining the Green Supplier Selection Criteria in Textile Enterprises
and Selecting the Most Ideal Distribution Model: A Case Study of Gi̇resun

    • Authors: Çağlar KARAMAŞA; Selçuk KORUCUK, Mustafa ERGÜN
Abstract: Supplier selection is an important process that needs to be emphasized if customer satisfaction and operating efficiency are to be attained. Businesses also need to take into account environmental sustainability as part of the criteria when selecting their suppliers. This is in line with the need for enterprises to prioritize ecological conditions in their supply chain components such as production, distribution, and storage. On top of the supplier selection problem, another component of the chain that has an impact on the performance and efficiency of the enterprise, especially due to the accompanying costs, and which needs to be given much consideration is the distribution. This study aims to determine the significance levels of the factors that need to be taken into account when determining the criteria to be used in the selection of a green supplier and an ideal distribution model for the company. The study the SAW method to determine the significance levels of the factors and the ROV method to obtain the ideal distribution model. The results revealed that the most important factors were "quality", "green elements" and "service" while the least important factors were found to be "delivery" and "technical elements", respectively. The most ideal distribution model was the "Feeding Flight Model".

  • ABC/XYZ Inventory Management Model in a Construction Material Warehouse

    • Authors: željko STEVİĆ; Bećirović MERİMA
Abstract: Accounting monitoring stocks of raw materials and supplies plays an important role in the business of every major company. Since inventories are one of the most expensive types of company assets, accounting for more than 50% of total invested capital, optimal inventory management should be an integral part of every company's business. In order to get complete results, this paper applies the ABC method, XYZ method, as well as the cross ABC XYZ method. The goal is to reduce costs of keeping the inventory as much as possible, while maintaining a level of service customers requires. The process of assortment planning, ordering and inventory management in the construction material warehouse is analyzed. The importance of monitoring inventory movements in order to achieve optimal amount of inventory, as well as the obtained results and guidelines for future operations is presented.

  • A Proposal Method for Missing Value Analysis: Cluster Analysis Approach

    • Authors: Uğur ARCAGÖK; Çiğdem ARICIGİL ÇİLAN
Abstract: Imputing values to missing cases is a subject that is frequently met in the fields of Machine Learning and Data Mining, and that require the researchers to study it. It is known that many computer-based analysis algorithms operate under assumption that there is no missing case. The lack of sufficient search of missing case by the researchers is able to negatively affect the performance of analysis results. In this study, it was studied with a data set consisting of 52 variables in order to measure the performance of Corporate Sustainability of district municipalities in Istanbul. Little’s MCAR was applied on 17 variables containing missing case, and it was determined that missing cases were MCAR, namely completely at random. And then Clustering Analysis was applied on 35 variables not containing missing case, and missing case imputations were made based on the clusters formed. It was observed that the cluster labels of municipalities, whose clustering analysis results obtained by data set with 35 variables that didn’t contain missing case, and whose results obtained by the data set with 52 variables following imputation were the same, didn’t change. The lack of change of cluster labels of municipalities indicates that the data set formed following imputation doesn’t draw away from the main data, namely that the data structure doesn’t get disrupted. Consequently, it can be said that clustering analysis is effective in terms of imputing more representative values in the imputation of missing case.

  • An Integrated PIPRECIA and COPRAS Method under Fuzzy Environment: A Case
           of Truck Tractor Selection

    • Authors: Aşkın ÖZDAĞOĞLU; Gülin Zeynep ÖZTAŞ, Murat Kemal KELEŞ, Volkan GENÇ
Abstract: Selecting the right truck tractor is critical for logistics companies involved in road freight transportation. The fact that having many conflicting criteria and many alternatives complicates the decision-making process for the decision-makers (DMs). The determination of the criteria that are effective in the selection of truck tractors and then the evaluation of the alternatives are the main objectives of this study. In this context, a hybrid Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) model composed of Fuzzy PIPRECIA (F-PIPRECIA) and Fuzzy COPRAS (F-COPRAS) methods is proposed to be used in the selection of truck tractors. In the related literature, no studies that applied F-PIPRECIA and F-COPRAS together to determine the best truck tractor have been published yet. In this regard, this study is thought to contribute to the literature both in terms of the methods used and the application of truck tractor selection. Moreover, the findings of this study will pave the way for those who conduct academic studies and the authorities of companies involved in road transport in the logistics sector.

  • Contributions to Theil-Sen Regression Analysis Parameter Estimation with
           Weighted Median

    • Authors: Cem ÖZTAŞ; Necati Alp ERİLLİ
Abstract: Regression analysis is one of the most commonly used estimation methods. In statistical studies, some assumptions must be fully met to make good estimations with regression analysis. Some of these assumptions are not always fulfilled in real life data. For such cases, alternative methods are used. One of them is Theil-sen method, which is one of the non-parametric regression analysis techniques. In this study, different analysis techniques were proposed by using the weighted median parameter instead of the median parameter used in the Theil-Sen regression method. With the proposed four different algorithms, new approaches to Theil-Sen regression analysis estimation have been introduced. It has been seen that the obtained results are successful compared to the classical Theil-Sen results.

  • Artificial Neural Network approach on Type II Regression Analysis

    • Authors: Berkalp TUNCA; Sinan SARAÇLI
Abstract: In this study, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach was applied to the OLS-Bisector technique, which is one of the Type II Regression techniques, through this study. In order to measure the performance of this newly created ANN-Bisector technique, it was compared with the OLS-Bisector technique. First of all, literature information on ANN and OLS-Bisector Regression techniques is given, and the features of two techniques are mentioned. In line with this information, a comparison was made between OLS based bisector technique and ANN based bisector techniques. In order to compare these two techniques, they were modeled in different distributions and in different sample sizes. In order to compare the performances of these models, the "Mean Absolute Percent Error" (MAPE) criterion was used. As a result of the study, it was seen that the ANN based bisector technique gave better results with lower error than the OLS based bisector technique. With this study, it is foreseen that it will represent an example for researchers who want to work in these fields in the future.

  • Financial Development and Economic Growth in BRICS-T Countries: An
           Econometric Application

    • Authors: Tuncer GÖVDELİ; Tuba ÖZKAN, Murat DİLMAÇ
Abstract: In this study, the cointegration and causality relationships between economic growth and financial development were empirically analyzed using the annual data of BRICS-T countries for the period from 1991 to 2017. Access, depth, and effectiveness data, as well as the variables of Gross Fixed Capital Formation, labor force, and economic growth, representing the capital, are among the indicators representing IMF's financial development. In this empirical study, where three different models were used, the long-term relationship of capital, labor force, and one of the three indicators with economic growth was examined. In the results obtained, all of the three models were found to have cointegration relationships, and it was concluded that the variables would act together in the long term. In addition, causality relationships between access, depth and efficiency, and economic growth, which represent financial development, were also investigated in this empirical study. In the findings, it was found that economic growth was the causative of access; and that there was a two-way causality relationship between depth and economic growth, as well as between efficiency and economic growth. In light of these results, it was concluded that there was a two-way causality between financial development and economic growth.
