  • The Impact of Academic Titles of Board Member and Directors Over the
Performance of Companies Traded at B3

    • Authors: Marcelo Perlin; Guilherme Kirch, Daniel Vancin, Mauro Mastella
Abstract: Previous studies show that the academic qualification of directors affects the performance and risk of companies. However, such evidence is based on a restricted set of information regarding the academic background and scientific output of directors. In this paper we investigate whether the academic titles of directors and board members impact the performance of publicly traded companies. The sample comprises 133 non-financial companies, from 2010 to 2018, consolidating information extracted from the financial exchange and the Lattes platform. Our results show that academics are more common on large boards of publicly controlled companies. Overall, the estimation results do not provide convincing evidence for the impact of academics over corporate performance. However, particularly, we see that only the presence of doctors with degrees obtained abroad affects positively the profitability and negatively the risk of the studied companies. Other academic attributes of the board impacted companies’ risk but not their profitability.

  • Are Altruists Environmentally Responsible and Materialists Environmentally
Irresponsible' An Analysis on the Moderation of Social Desirability
           and Mediation of Environmental Awareness

    • Authors: Thiago Costa; Heidy Ramos, Leonardo Vils, Julio Cunha
Abstract: We investigated if altruism and materialism can explain attitudes related to the lower impact on the environment. This study aims to investigate the role of environmental awareness as a mediating variable between altruism and environmental responsibility, and if materialistic individuals can manifest environmental responsibility through social desirability. Also, we investigated the relations of altruism and materialism with environmental irresponsibility. Using the structural equations model, we analyzed the data from a survey with 339 individuals. The results conclude that altruism does not have a direct relationship with environmental irresponsibility, but has a relationship with environmental responsibility, not direct, but mediated by environmental awareness. Besides a direct relationship between materialism and environmental irresponsibility, we did not find a direct relationship with environmental responsibility, not even with the moderation of social desirability. This study shows values and attitudes that collaborate with proenvironmental behaviors, demonstrating the importance of environmental awareness for individuals to engage in actions favorable to sustainable consumption.

Abstract: Dear readers, We present to you the volume 18, nº 5 of 2021 of the Brazilian Business Review. Always focusing on the quality and diversity of the areas of knowledge, BBR proposes to contribute to the academic environment by bringing relevant research and discussions to the business area. Opening the issue, Lima, Kubo, and Oliva analyze how the personal values of entrepreneurs influence the degree of professionalization in their businesses. Based on a descriptive and exploratory approach, with data collected via survey and focus group, the authors find evidence that ethics and capitalist values have a great influence on professionalism, more than risk, innovation, and family history.  https://bit.ly/37RyhuA Our second paper, by Costa Júnior, Primo, and Jerônimo, proposes a model for studying organizational routines as generative systems based on time and innovation. Based on a qualitative approach, through multiple case studies, the authors find evidence that confirms the relationship between routines and the process of resource orchestration, incorporation and development of innovations, and organizational learning. The main contribution of the study is the proposed model to understand routines as a generative system capable of diversifying the outputs of organizational action, enhancing the results arising from innovations.  https://bit.ly/3xOSQT1 Next, Borges and Janissek-Muniz propose an investigation into the reasons for low adherence of foresight processes in organizations. Based on a sample of 185 executives from the financial and technology sectors, the authors identified a reduction in the perceived value of foresight processes due to the illusion of control and the individual practices of these activities. The results contribute to the understanding of the low adherence of foresight processes, from the perspective of cognitive biases attributed to the decision maker. https://bit.ly/3kXCPHH Our fourth paper, by Laviniki, Laimer, Rodrigues and Marques, analyzes the effect of absorptive capacity on the financial performance of Brazilian and Portuguese companies operating in a low-tech sector. Based on a sample of 72 real estate companies, the authors find evidence that absorptive capacity exerts an effect on financial performance in both the Brazilian and Portuguese contexts, being more pronounced in the latter. The results can help companies identify ways to better appropriate external information and knowledge to improve absorptive capacity.  https://bit.ly/3rzDVe5 Following, Perlin, Kirch, Vancin, and Mastella analyze whether the academic qualifications of directors and board members impact the performance of publicly traded companies. Based on a sample of 133 non-financial companies, between 2010 and 2018, the authors find evidence that academics are more common in larger boards of publicly controlled companies. One of the contributions of the study is a discussion of how academic professionals can help the market. https://bit.ly/2YnYL5F Closing the issue, Costa, Ramos, Vils, and Cunha investigate whether altruism and materialism can explain attitudes related to lower impact on the environment. Based on a survey with 339 individuals, the authors find evidence that altruism is not directly related to environmental irresponsibility, but rather an indirect relationship to environmental responsibility, mediated by environmental awareness. The study contributes by showing values and attitudes that collaborate with pro-environmental behavior, demonstrating the importance of environmental awareness for individuals to engage in actions that favor sustainable consumption. https://bit.ly/3zIaqd8 I hope you enjoy our selection of papers. • Routines, Generative Systems Analyzed as a Function Based on Time and
           Innovation

    • Authors: Júlio César da Costa Júnior; Marcos André Mendes Primo; Taciana Jerônimo
Abstract: This study aims to propose a model to study organizational routines as a generative system based on time and innovation. Routines are intrinsically related to resources orchestration processes, learning, know-how accumulation and organizational expertise. Over time, combined with innovations, inprocess, or via technological artifacts, routines may contribute to diversifying the portfolio of outputs able to add value to a company result. The study follows a qualitative approach, with an applied nature, and was made through multiple case studies. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews and was beaconed by protocol subject to peers validation. The main contribution is the model which is proposed to understand routines as a generative system able to diversify the outputs or organizational actions enhancing the results arisen from innovations. Results have confirmed the relation between routines and resources orchestrations process, incorporation and development of innovations, and organizational learning.

  • The Personal Values of Small-Business Entrepreneurs: Evidence from Brazil

    • Authors: Daniel Lima; Edson Kubo, Eduardo Oliva
Abstract: Despite the apparent relationship between personal values and entrepreneurship, this topic t has been subject to little academic research. This article aims to explain, in the Brazilian context, how the personal values of entrepreneurs influence the degree of professionalism in their business. The article uses a descriptive and exploratory quantitative approach, with data collected via a survey and focus group. Results show that, in the Brazilian context, ethics and capitalist values have a greater influence on professionalism than do risk, innovation, family history, etc. Certain personal values of small-business entrepreneurs become organizational values that drive their actions in challenging environments. The finding that only one of the ten independent variables has been considered statistically influential on professionalism constitutes its main theoretical contribution. It rethinks professionalism, no longer as a dependent variable, but as a personal value, like the rest, in independent, innovative and sovereign way.

  • Perceived value of organizational foresight processes: effects of the
illusion of control and individual foresight

    • Authors: Natália Borges; Raquel Janissek-Muniz
Abstract: This research proposes an investigation into the reasons for low adherence for foresight processes in organizations. Studies involving the relevance of foresight processes have become increasingly frequent, driven by an environment of increasing volatility, uncertainty, ambiguity, and complexity. Despite the importance of the topic, which seeks to enable organizations to anticipate threats and opportunities from the environment through methods, there
is still little adherence to these practices, which justifies the purpose of this investigation. To achieve the proposed objective, a questionnaire was structured. Then, it was applied via electronic survey, allowing the observation of the effects of the illusion of control and individual foresight activities on the perceived value of formal foresight processes in organizations. The data were analyzed based on structural equations modeling with estimation through Partial Least Square (PLS). The sample was composed of 185 executives from the financial and technological sectors, and a reduction to the perceived value of foresight processes was identified, as a result of the illusion of control and individual practices of these activities. These results contribute to the understanding of the low adherence of foresight processes, from the perspective of cognitive biases attributed to the decision-maker.

  • The effect of absorptive capacity on the financial performance of
Brazilian and Portuguese companies in a low technological intensity sector

    • Authors: Juliane Laviniki; Claudionor Guedes Laimer, Carlos Rodrigues, João Lourenço Marques
Abstract: The digital transformation has driven a more assertive absorption of external information and knowledge in all economic activities, especially in the low technological intensity sector, where competition has been fierce. In this way, the use of information and knowledge can provide companies with higher performance before its competitors. Thus, this study seeks to verify the effect of absorptive capacity (ACAP) on the financial performance of Brazilian and Portuguese companies that operate in low technological intensity sectors. The study is part of initial research that addresses ACAP in sectors that do not release innovations in the market. A survey was carried out based on validated scales, but adapted to the low technology sector. Then, a new validation of the scales was carried out and a t-test was performed to check if there are differences and regression analysis to answer the hypotheses. The results showed that ACAP has an effect on financial performance, both in the Brazilian and Portuguese context, being higher in Portuguese companies. In addition, it was also shown that the two dimensions of ACAP have different influences on financial performance, when considering the two contexts. It can be concluded that ACAP can be applied in sectors of low technological intensity, as this has an influence over the financial performance of companies.
