           Different Academic Areas

Abstract: Abstract Causes for the distinct and growing separation of the academic domains of economics and neighboring fields are ongoing processes of specialization, fragmentation, and evolution. Thanks to the proliferation of publications and knowledge in economics, degrees of specialization have emerged. One of the great paradoxes in economics is the existence of mainstream economics, which is taught to undergraduate students and dominates textbooks, alongside new contributions that enter the arena via other disciplines (e.g., psychology, history, and law). The paper delineates some developments in economics over the last 100 years oscillating between continuity and change. Especially, the interplay between different domains in the social sciences is discussed as fields of tension and cooperation between economics and other disciplines. The message of the article is that economics is not a homogeneous body of being, content, and learning. Economics has a diverse knowledge base on a theoretical and methodological level with different forms of economic capacity, conceptual sensitivity, and methodological rigor. Many different approaches coexist with corresponding camps of authors. A multiplicity of topics and discourses can be observed with an interesting division of economics with one branch focused on mathematics, econometric tools, and applications, and the other branch moving towards increasing social scientification with strong links to psychology, history, philosophy, and sociology. The Oxford credo of politics, philosophy, and economics (PPE) has undergone a revival in this respect.

  • Rationality and Business Cycle Theory in the Austrian Tradition: A Note on
           Methodology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Since most economic theories that discuss individual choices treat individuals as acting for reason, and thus in some way rationally, questions about the role that rationality plays in economics are of great importance. Rationality is often expressed by “Homo Economicus” through utility theory versus its identification through social terms by “Homo Sociologicus”. In this framework, business cycle theory is often rooted in assumptions regarding individual or collective rationality. Thus, the study of business cycles in combination with the concept of rationality may shed light on methodological issues. This paper focuses on the Austrian tradition because of its distinct characteristics: (a) the view that economics is part of the broader concept of political economy; (b) its antithesis to mathematical formalism, (c) its antithesis between ideal types and reality, (d) the struggle between groups for the distribution of wealth; and (v) methodological reductionism. Hence, investigating the methodological origins of these ideas in economics and re-evaluating the influences that shaped them is quite useful for promoting dialogue in the methodology of economics.

           Sciences'

Abstract: Abstract This paper explains the role of methodological individualism as a methodology for the social sciences by briefly discussing its forerunners in economics and sociology, especially in the works of Carl Menger and Max Weber, followed by some comments on Karl Popper’s and other critical rationalists’ contributions as well as rational choice theories. Some recent arguments against methodological rationalism are then provided, including counterarguments, mainly based on exemplary work by economists and sociologists. This paper proposes a scheme for analyses using (weak) methodological individualism, in particular, arguing that evolutionary approaches to the explanation of economic and other social phenomena that accord with methodological individualism suggest that it is a successful and progressive methodology for economics and sociology.

  • Amartya Sen and the Revival of Ethical Tradition in Economics

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Much of the twentieth century debate regarding economics revolved around the contested roles of the state and the market. The outcome of this debate largely deprived economics of the moral compass that was once one of its hallmarks. In this regard, Sen made a significant contribution in placing ethics back into the theory of economics by focusing his work on the long-neglected relationship between the two subjects and challenging the philosophical foundations of traditional economic theory, arguing that although, in principle, economic behaviour and moral disposition might be separated, in practice, both are deeply intertwined. Ethical concerns inevitably infiltrate even a good deal of positive and normative economics. In recent years, there has been a call from within economics to humanize economics by reviving its ethical tradition. Consequently, the moral dimensions of economic life are now subject to reflection and constant negotiation. This reinterpretation may deal with overall economic relations or it could be related to one specific aspect. The former focuses on reviving the economic system as a whole while the latter aims to improve the system by focusing on existing limitations. In examining the relationship between economics and philosophy, this paper draws on one of the principal areas of Sen’s economic research, the capability approach, to explore how Sen’s ethical philosophy delineates engagement between economics and moral philosophy.

  • Internet Access and Bank Deposit Rates

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This paper explores the level and dispersion of retail bank deposit interest rates and finds that a crucial differentiating factor in whether deposit rates rise or fall in search costs is the extent to which depositors are responsive to higher deposit rates. Using a search-theoretic model in which depositors have uniform search costs but differing utilities from bank services, lower search costs through greater internet access cause equilibrium deposit rates to rise for products in which depositors are more rate-sensitive (e.g., certificates of deposit (CDs)) and fall for less rate-sensitive products (demand deposits). The study’s contribution, in contrast to typical single-product analyses, is in revealing search cost effects across products with differing elasticities. In so doing, a rationale is provided for the mixed results in the empirical literature. Using United States census and internet access data from 2001 to 2010, a time period for which internet access grew nationally from 55 to 76% according to the Pew Research Center, the study finds that a reduction in search costs, measured by greater internet access, is associated with a higher average interest rate on CDs and lower demand deposit rates. Additionally, dispersion of both demand deposit rates and CD rates are negatively correlated with search costs, consistent with theory under reasonable conditions. While internet access results in more deposits, the differences in rate movement across banking products imply that depositors gain proportionally more welfare in the case of CDs, but banks gain proportionally more welfare in the case of demand deposits.

  • Spontaneous Order and the Hayekian Challenge to Interdisciplinary Social
           Scientists

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The social sciences have been divided into departmental silos for far too long, yielding at best partial insights among economists, political scientists, and sociologists. The most influential attempt at integration, economic imperialism, distorted our understanding of processes with looser constraints than among producers in competitive markets. The theory of spontaneous order, first developed by Michael Polanyi and Friedrich Hayek in the 1940s and 1950s, offers a more promising framework for interdisciplinary social theory. It does not rely on unrealistic assumptions of maximizing behavior, unlike rational choice theory borrowed from neoclassical economics. It is compatible with psychological findings on human behavior, recognizes the heterogeneity of resources and constraints in different social orders, and pays attention to historical processes of individual and social learning. Spontaneous-order theory provides a unified framework for four key orders of decentralized human interaction: the cultural, democratic, market, and scientific orders. Each such order is associated with order-specific resources. Order participants face constraints, but these constraints are not always the same, even within the same order. For example, competing producers face relatively tight break-even constraints, which make their actions unusually predictable. In contrast, consumers in a market order or politicians in a democracy face looser constraints. They are not compelled to maximize utilities or votes, but their relatively loose constraints nevertheless make many potential actions infeasible. Consumption requires money and policies require votes and resources. Exact predictions become impossible, but spontaneous-order analyses offer the promise of more reliable pattern predictions.

  • Economic Complexity and Inflation: An Empirical Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study examines the relationship between inflation and economic complexity, the set of productive capabilities and know-how embedded in the structure of an economy. It posits that economic complexity, by providing the economy with the ability to reduce macroeconomic shocks, is associated with lower inflation. Economic complexity is inferred from the overall sophistication and mix of a country’s exports. Complex economies are highly diversified and export a large number of less ubiquitous products. Using a sample of 94 countries for the period 1970 to 2014, the impact of economic complexity on inflation is estimated using the Arellano and Bond generalized method of moments estimation procedure. The empirical results show that economic complexity has a negative causal impact on inflation. This effect is statistically significant, quantitatively large, and robust. From a policy perspective, the findings suggest that development driven by economic diversification, a critical component of economic complexity, rather than export specialization, is more likely to promote low inflation, a crucial objective of macroeconomic policy.

  • Protestant Refugees, the Calvinist Ethic and the Industrial Revolution

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract In this paper, it is argued that the industrial revolution in eighteenth century Great Britain had its origins in the arrival of 100,000–140,000 Protestant refugees in England and Ireland in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Specifically, it is argued that their arrival prompted both Schmooklerian pull and push factors. The pull factor was the thousands of refugee merchants and ship owners/captains to England and Ireland resulting in the creation of the Protestant International (1550-1750). This increased the demand for tradables which in turn spurred invention and innovation among refugees (push factor) and their descendants as well as in the local population. These factors were self-reinforcing, leading in time to the industrial revolution. The result is a novel account of the origins of the industrial revolution, one that is consistent with competing explanations.
