  • To Print or Not to Print: An Investigation of Print Marketing Preference
           and Use in the Campus Community

    • Abstract: Th e current trend of increasing return on investment by phasing out print marketing campaigns in favor of digital and social media-based marketing may not be appropriate for all campus communities or stakeholders. Th e authors investigated the communication preferences of students, faculty, and staff at a diverse, public university. In addition, they surveyed the primary use and eff ectiveness of a printed schedule. Th eir fi ndings indicate that most students use the printed Summer Term schedule to check the session calendar, dates, deadlines, and policies. Th ey also compared printed schedule use among new and returning students. In stark contrast to the students surveyed, faculty and staff were found to use the printed schedule to obtain general campus information. Th e printed schedule, both mailed directly and available for pick-up on campus, was preferred as a method of communication at a level on par with social media. While these fi ndings may not be generalizable to all summer term programs, they indicate that the conversation regarding print marketing is perhaps one that should be revisited.   • Pandemic Response: Impact of Accelerated English Courses on Student
           Achievement and Withdrawal Rates

    • Abstract: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been efforts to modify teaching modalities to avoid interruption in the learning process. Previous studies determined a correlation between accelerated classes and student achievement, but there is a lack of research on the efficacy of accelerated learning in response to a pandemic. This study analyzed college student academic achievement and withdrawal rates in accelerated 8-week English courses to determine whether fast-paced courses were a better modality than 16-week courses. Quantitative methods were employed with collected archival data to establish comparative statistical relationships between students’ success and withdrawal rates in accelerated-term and full-term English courses. Nonrandom sampling was conducted to obtain intended data from 368 college students in a Texas public college in 2019–21. The results indicated that students in accelerated sections had higher success rates and lower withdrawal rates based on the characteristics and limitations of this study. Further research is required to focus on factors that might affect the outcomes, such as teaching styles and preparedness of professors to handle different modalities.   • Condensed and Uploaded: Comparing Student Learning Outcomes in a Condensed
           Online Summer Class with Outcomes in a Full-Length Semester Face-to-Face
           Class

    • Abstract: With the significant cost of higher education and the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, college students are increasingly seeking alternative modalities to traditional, face-to-face learning. However, concerns arise regarding whether condensed, online classes offer a comparable experience to their full-length, face-to-face counterparts. Using a pretest/posttest design, this study compares the achievement of learning outcomes and student satisfaction between a course offered in a full-semester, face-to-face format and a condensed, online modality. Results indicate that, although online students in the condensed course achieved more of their anticipated learning outcomes, they were less satisfied with their instructor.   • What Every President and Every Chief Academic Officer Should Know about
           College and University Summer Sessions—Redux

    • Abstract: Using as a framework a paper titled “What Every President and Every Chief Academic Officer Should Know about College and University Summer Sessions”(based on a 1997 North American Association of Summer Sessions conference presentation by Ronald Wasserstein), we explore the extent to which research findings over the intervening 24 years support or question Wasserstein’s views. Topics include summer term organizational structures and administrative oversight, serving academic needs of students, instructional contributions and benefits of faculty, and the relationship of the summer term to the mission and goals of institutions. As well, we comment on Wasserstein’s arguments encouraging the alignment of the summer term with the rest of the academic year and recommending membership in professional associations to support the functions of nascent and established summer term offices. Finally, and understandably not part of Wasserstein’s discussion, we offer a perspective on the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic has affected and will affect the role of the summer term within universities and colleges.   • Library Support for Online Graduate Students in the Summer Session

    • Abstract: Summer sessions are an excellent opportunity for graduate students, and have been increasing in popularity in recent years. However, many of these sessions are moving online. Online library databases can be challenging to navigate, and there is a lack of student-librarian interaction. This paper discusses the research on the problems that arise for online graduate students during summer sessions and presents best practices for digital library support for those students. These best practices include • online citation and reference management workshops, • online subject-specific library navigation and user guides, and • collaboration between library and teaching faculty. These practices will help eliminate students’ use of unreliable research resources and provide them with proper support.   • A By-Product of Summer Programs: Student Marketers and Career-Readiness

    • Abstract: Universities are exploring many models for delivering a fuller term in the summer. The structures and strategies of these differing models are invariably aimed at the same thing: increasing institutional awareness, student enrollment, and ultimately university revenue. Yet there is also room for involving students themselves in this endeavor so that the institutions benefit from their insight and labor, and so that the students benefit from on-the-job training that develops the skills prized by their future employers. This paper provides a brief narrative of one university’s shift from the fairly industry-wide, relatively casual approach to summer term of yesterday to something much more substantive today. This story itself is neither important here nor surprising. In fact, many other universities will recognize elements of it. Rather, it provides an introductory context for a surprising by-product: the professional development of student marketers involved in the strategy. We lay out employer definitions of career-readiness and, through structured interviews, demonstrate how supervised involvement in peer-to-peer marketing, much like an internship, enabled students to recognize how they had improved their career-readiness.   • Experiential Learning in a Summer Program: Engaging Undergraduate Students
           in STEM Research Experience

    • Abstract: This study explored experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students in the area of energy and environment as part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research Experience for Undergraduate students (xREU). This summer research project was conducted in a private university located in the northeastern United States. Since the primary objective of the xREU program was to attract students from non-research-intensive universities to interdisciplinary research, the program was specifically designed to address the development of key learning and working skills that will serve participants throughout their careers. Using several instruments (including the National Engineering Students’ Learning Outcomes Survey [NESLOS], a survey administered biweekly, and a 24-item demographic questionnaire), we collected both qualitative and quantitative data. The results showed that, overall, participants’ content knowledge and other related skills were enhanced over the summer through experiential learning opportunities. At the beginning of the program, most students learned more about conducting an experiment from their coursework learning, whereas toward the end of the program they learned more from their engineering service experiences.
