  • Etisk förhandsprövning av studentarbeten: lärosätenas
           ansvar

    • Authors: Lotta Wendel, Camilla Nordgren, Claes Andersson
English abstract Ethical Review of Student Projects: The Responsibility of Higher Education Institutions How common is it for students to undertake projects involving ethically sensitive content' This article presents a study on higher education pedagogical development project concerning the formalized ethical review of student essays. The survey included essays that were examined and approved at the Faculty of Health and Society, Malmö university during 2014–2017. Ethically sensitive content refers here to sensitive personal data and intervention methods that, in research, require ethical review according to the Act (2003:460) on ethical review of research involving humans. Out of a total of 1215 examined thesis, 277 (22.8%) contained ethically sensitive content; the most common being personal health-related data. 165 (13.6%) essays contained such information. Advanced level theses had a higher prevalence of ethically sensitive content (32.9%) compared to undergraduate theses (20.4%). This indicates that a significant proportion of undergraduate students undertook projects involving content that would require ethical review if they were researchers. The faculty’s guidelines stipulate that all student works containing content requiring prior ethical review in research, should be reviewed by the faculty’s ethics council. However, only 68.9% of the essays that necessitated such review passed the ethics council, indicating a gap in compliance with ethical review processes. The study suggests that the effectiveness of formalized ethical review of thesis projects is enhanced when the student’s supervisor holds a doctoral degree, likely due to their familiarity and experience with ethical review procedures. Furthermore, the research highlights variations in the implementation of ethical review across different departments within the faculty. The article delves into possible reasons for these discrepancies.

English abstract
Exploring One’s Own Teaching Practices: A Discussion on Ethical Aspects Related to Scholarship of Teaching and Learning The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) involves systematically exploring and reflecting upon one’s own teaching practices with the aim of developing teaching to facilitate and enhance student learning. Examining one’s own practices may pose particular ethical challenges, but currently, there are no ethical guidelines in a Swedish context specifically addressing pedagogical development and SoTL. The purpose of this in-depth discussion is to shed light on and discuss the ethical aspects of SoTL and educational development in higher education. Drawing on research ethics, care ethics, and the professional ethics of university teachers, some key ethical dilemmas that university educators need to consider in the exploration of their own teaching practices are discussed.

English abstract A Project to Increase Collaboration between the University Library and Departments at the University of Gothenburg This text describes a development project conducted by the Gothenburg University Library in co-operation with the School of Public Administration at the University of Gothenburg. The aim of the project was to make the library’s activities more visible, gain a better understanding of the departments’ needs and create relationships between librarians and teachers, researchers, and doctoral students. By having a university librarian visiting the department one day a week for a semester, the librarian was able to develop a greater understanding of the staff’s working methods, both in terms of research and teaching. In concrete terms, this has resulted in more contact areas and suggestions for further ways of organising cooperation between the library and the university departments. In this text, we start by presenting the model of embedded librarianship as a way of understanding the integrating and relationship-building approach, and thereafter present the lessons we have jointly learnt during the project.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT Cripping higher education. Difference and experience in university classrooms At the same time as anti-democratic forces are growing in Europe, the issues of broader recruitment and diversity in higher education have once again come to the fore. In its 2022 evaluation of universities’ work towards broader recruitment, the Swedish Higher Education Authority notes that social inequality in recruitment persists. Imbalanced recruitment has negative effects on both democratic societal development and social justice. More than 20 years after the task of promoting broader recruitment was written into the Higher Education Act, there is reason to consider why so little has happened. This essay argues that the gaze should be turned away from underrepresented groups and fixed towards exclusionary norms and social structures within universities. The aim of the text is to discuss how university teachers can counteract mechanisms that make some students feel at home within the university while excluding others. The essay has an intersectional perspective but focuses on exclusionary norms and structures based on the notion of the normal body – namely, ableism. The essay discusses methods for visualizing teachers’ and students’ situatedness, pedagogical tools for giving voice to different experiences, the implications of choice of perspectives and course literature, and accessible teaching. Making differences visible without organizing them hierarchically does not only turn different experiences into a resource for mutual learning, but also promotes critical thinking.

utvikling blant undervisere i høyere utdanning'

    • Authors: Stig Eriksen, Yngve Troye Nordkvelle, Bjarne w. Strøm
      Pages: 15 - 29
ENGLISH ABSTRACT How Can We Document Increased Didactic Understanding and Pedagogical Development Amongst Teachers in Higher Eduction' This article tries to bring substance to a claim that it is useful and profitable for higher education institutions to train their teaching staff in the art and craft of teaching. An analysis of the established research literature tells us that the challenges of measuring and estimating the effect is a cumbersome endeavour. In the era of evidence as a notion stemming from medical research, which is understood as the gold standard of research, this research is based on a modified longitudinal strategy. The study argues that the findings are consistent over years that participants in courses on teaching and learning in higher education affect them significantly in terms of how they teach, supervise and assess students’ achievements. They also develop more of a professional vocabulary about educational matters, they meet colleagues and establish network they find helpful and stimulating for their reflection about educational choices and results. A more somber finding is that candidates returning to their units with enthusiasm and urge to change are most often met with neglect and disinterest. This poses serious challenges to pedagogical leadership in Higher Education and the aim of developing a learning organisation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT On the Art of Learning to Read and Write. The Text Culture of the History of Ideas from a Writing Pedagogical Perspective This text examines the conditions for developing the text-pedagogical approach of the history of ideas discipline by supplementing its traditional reading-oriented teaching style with an adequate writing pedagogy. Its further aim is to show how the application of pedagogical writing perspectives in teaching within the history of ideas subject can contribute to a deeper understanding of the discipline’s text culture and the positive implications such perspectives can have for its teaching methods. Supported by a discussion of findings from the field of writing research, the text analyses how a writing-oriented pedagogy can contribute to the students’ development both as readers and as writing producers of knowledge. The article concludes with an outline of a concept for developing a classical type of courses in the discipline so that these can integrate the insights from the article’s discussion. An overall conclusion is that the acquiring of a metacognitive ability to grasp discipline-specific text cultures is a decisive element in good humanistic education.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT Jointly with others: Learning to collaborate in higher education teacher training In the recommended general learning outcomes for higher education teacher training issued by the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions (SUHF), one objective states that participants should demonstrate the ability to ”independently, and jointly with others, plan, implement and evaluate teaching and assessment in higher education with a scientific, scholarly or artistic basis and within their own area of knowledge”. This article analyzes interpretations made by academic developers of SUHF’s wording jointly with others. It also discusses what foundations higher education teaching courses offer participants for developing knowledge, skills, and abilities to collaborate with others in their pedagogical work. Three aspects of educational collaboration emerged from semi- structured interviews with twelve academic developers at nine Swedish universities: developing a language for learning; developing a critical approach; and developing a professional capacity to act. It also became evident during the interviews that the academic developers interpret jointly as working together with colleagues, rather than just side by side, and that they hope that their course participants are acquiring the knowledge, skills, and abilities to enable them to engage in a shared pedagogical practice. However, the academic developers also find it problematic that they rarely come into contact with teaching teams through their courses, making it difficult to assess participants’ ability to collaborate with colleagues within their own areas of knowledge. In other words, it is uncertain whether it is possible to achieve SUHF’s objective in the higher education teacher training courses as they are organized at the nine universities studied.
