  • Feasibility of a microlearning intervention about nutritional care for
older adults provided by hospital and home care nurses and nursing
           assistants: A mixed-methods study

    • Authors: Debbie ten Cate; Jeroen Dikken, Roelof G.A. Ettema, Lidia van Veenendaal, Marieke J. Schuurmans, Lisette Schoonhoven
Abstract: Background and objective: Hospital and home care nurses and nursing assistants do not provide optimal nutritional care to older adults, which is due to several factors that influence their current behaviour. To successfully target these factors, we developed a microlearning intervention. The next step is to assess its feasibility to achieve the best fit with nursing practice. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of the microlearning intervention about nutritional care for older adults provided by hospital and home care nurses and nursing assistants. Methods: In a multicentre study, we used a mixed-methods design. Feasibility was determined by assessing 1) recruitment and retention of the participants and 2) the acceptability, compliance and delivery of the intervention. Data about the use of the intervention (consisting of 30 statements), and data from a standardised questionnaire and two focus group interviews were used to measure the feasibility outcomes. Results: Fourteen teams with a total of 306 participants (response rate: 89.7%) completed the intervention and the median (Q1, Q3) score for completed statements per participant was 23 (12, 28). The mean proportion of correct answers was 72.2%. Participants were both positive and constructive about the intervention. They confirmed that they mostly learned from the intervention. Overall, the intervention was acceptable to the participants and compliance and delivery was adequate. Conclusions: The microlearning intervention is mostly feasible for hospital and home care nurses and nursing assistants. Based on participants’ constructive feedback, we consider that the intervention needs refinement to improve its feasibility.

  • Factors affecting psychological adjustment of oncology patients at
different cancer welfare societies in Saudi Arabia

    • Authors: Nouf Awdh Alhassni; Lama Saeed Rafie, Majdah Eid Alharbi, Yara Yaser Janbi, Elham Al Nagshabandi, Asmaa Hamdi Khalil
Abstract: Background and objective: Cancer induces more psychological pressure than any other illness in humans, and produces various physical, psychological, social, economic, and family issues. There are many factors associated with adjustment in cancer patients. Various cancer therapies can complicate and affect patient’s adjustment to the disease. Study aim: To assess factors affecting psychological disease adjustment of oncology patients at different cancer societies in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A quantitative cross sectional correlational research design was utilized to conducted the study among cancer patients at different cancer welfare societies in regions of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Two electronic questionnaires were used to collect data including Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) Scale, and Factors affecting patient’s adjustment to cancer disease questionnaire. Data were tabulated in MS Excel and all data analyses were carried out using SPSS version 26.Results: 374 cancer patients most common age group from them was 18-29 years old (31.3%) with more than a half were females (53.2%) and nearly all (89.6%) were Saudis. In terms of mental adjustment, female gender and low income had a negative impact on worried preoccupation, whereas regular exercise, listening to music, having a family history of cancer, and having friends with cancer had a beneficial impact. Non-Saudis had a higher fighting spirit than Saudis, while those with a decent income and regular exercise had a lower fighting spirit. Fatalism also had a strong impact on patients who were less educated or had a family history of cancer. Conclusions: The overall mental adjustment of cancer patients had been affected by the regular exercise and similar illness among their friends but non-Saudis demonstrated better coping strategies than Saudi patients. The researchers recommend that health care providers encourage the patient to express feeling and to perform regular exercise to decrease the level of anxiety and enhance mood.

  • Validation of an instrument to assess fluid control in outpatient
           hemodialysis patients

    • Authors: Viviane Nóbrega Gularte Azevedo; Tahissa Frota Cavalcante, Raphaella Castro Jansen, Rafaella Pessoa Moreira, Ana Luisa Brandão de Carvalho Lira, Ana Railka de Souza Oliveira-Kumakura
Abstract: Purpose: To validate an instrument to assess fluid control in outpatient hemodialysis patients, using the NANDA International (NANDA-I), Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) terminologies. Methods: A methodological study was carried out in two steps: (1) construction of an instrument composed of operational definitions of the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis Excess fluid volume, indicators of the NOC outcome Fluid balance, and activities of the NIC intervention Fluid management, from a narrative literature review, and (2) content validation of the instrument by five experts through a focus group. Results: The instrument was composed of operational definitions of 27 defining characteristics of Excess fluid volume, 23 Fluid balance indicators, and 13 Fluid management activities. Twenty-five out of the 27 defining characteristics were considered valid. Two defining characteristics were excluded from the instrument, as they were considered unsuitable for assessing outpatients on hemodialysis. Thirteen out of the 23 indicators of Fluid balance were reformulated, and two were removed. Thirteen activities of Fluid management were reformulated. Conclusions: An instrument was built incorporating components of the nursing diagnosis Excess fluid volume, the nursing outcome Fluid balance, and the nursing intervention Fluid management. The instrument was considered valid in terms of content and can be used to assess outpatients on hemodialysis. Implications for nursing practice: The instrument created may contribute to the standardization, qualification, and improvement of nursing practice in outpatient hemodialysis facilities.

  • Reflections on fostering student nurse evidence-based practice
competencies via integration of nursing best practice guidelines

    • Authors: Kathryn Ewers; Charles Anyinam, Erin Davis
Abstract: Evidence-based nursing practice has been identified as an important nurse competency and standard of practice by nurse regulators and nurse educators in both the United States and Canada, yet little is known about the curricular strategies which foster development of evidence-based competencies in the undergraduate nursing context. Although there are several evidence-based practice models that are being used by nurses, much of the literature reflects evidence-based practice implementation strategies which are focused on nurses already in practice. It remains unclear how evidence-based practice competencies are being taught to undergraduate nursing students. In the Canadian context, the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, promotes the implementation of Nursing Best Practice Guidelines as a viable strategy for implementing evidence-base nursing practice in both the clinical and academic contexts. Clinical and academic institutions that implement best practice guidelines and meet the outcome criteria of the Registered Nurses Association may be designated as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization. In this paper, two of the authors reflect on the curricular strategies they used to integrate Best Practice Guidelines into selected undergraduate nursing courses and the challenges and opportunities that this engendered as part of their university school of nursing’s journey to achieve designation as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (Academic).

  • Nurses’ professional identity and information needs in the time of
           Covid-19: A latent cluster analysis

    • Authors: Veronika Anselmann; Benjamin Bohn
Abstract: The aims of this study are to find out, how nurses differ regarding their professional identity in times of Covid-19 and if nurses of different clusters of professional identity also differ regarding their satisfaction with their information needs. To get more insights in nurses work situation in Covid-19, we asked nurses about information sources they use to get information about Covid-19, by whom they feel supported, and if they feel fear working in times of Covid-19. We conducted a cross-sectional study. We used online questionnaires. 266 Nurses in Germany (N = 266) participated in our study. The study was conducted during Covid-19 pandemic. Our results show that most nurses use information about Covid-19 provided by their organisation. Most of them find social support through their colleagues. There are two clusters of nurses with significantly different professional identities; these two clusters show significant differences regarding their satisfaction with information needs. The results of the study are important for nursing organisations that should provide information for their nurses and by this can have influence on their coping strategies.
