  • Preferred tilt angle for solar heaters operating in natural circulation
           regime in Cuba

    • Abstract: Resumen En el trabajo se realizó la modelación de un colector solar plano para calentamiento de aire operando en régimen de convección natural en las condiciones de Cuba. Se determinó el ángulo de inclinación del colector que permita obtener la mayor extracción de energía con un mayor rendimiento energético anual de la instalación. Para ello se realiza la simulación del colector variando su ángulo de inclinación, buscando así el de mayor eficiencia. El análisis se realizó siguiendo una aproximación numérica siguiendo el método de los volúmenes finitos. El cálculo fue realizado en estado estacionario y bajo régimen turbulento de flujo. Fue obtenido el ángulo de inclinación con mayor rendimiento energético entre 45 y 50 grados. Debido a la similitud entre el comportamiento del flujo de masa y la eficiencia media anual es el flujo de masa y su influencia en el calor útil el efecto predominante en los cambios de eficiencia. Existe asimetría en el perfil de velocidades del colector pues se alcanzan las mayores velocidades en la mitad inferior del colector.Abstract The best tilt for solar air collector working in natural convection regime under Cubans conditions. The paper dealt with the modeling of a flat solar collector for air heating operating in a natural convection regime in Cuba. The angle of tilt for the collector which allows the greatest extraction of energy and a greater annual energy efficiency of the installation was determined. The collector simulation is performed by varying the tilt angle, looking for the one with the highest efficiency. A numerical approach following the finite volume method was applied. The calculations were carried out in steady state and the flow regime was turbulent. The tilt angle having the best energy efficiency was obtained ranging from 45o to 50o. Due to the similarity between the mass flow behavior and annual average efficiency, the mass flow and its influence on useful heat are the predominant effect in the efficiency changes. An asymmetric velocity profile was found since the higher speeds are reached in the lower half of the collector.
       
  • Analysis of indicators at canned tuna processing plant boiler

    • Abstract: Resumen El presente trabajo es el resultado de la investigación realizada en la Planta Procesadora de Conservas de Atún. El atún en conservas es su producto estrella, lo cual ha llevado a establecer los estándares de uno de sus equipos más críticos; el generador de vapor (la caldera Cleaver Brooks CB-LE), teniendo como punto de partida, el registro de fallas en un software de mantenimiento programado ya implantado. Una parte de la gestión de mantenimiento que se aplica actualmente en esta caldera, está basada en la experiencia adquirida del personal encargado del mantenimiento, mientras que la otra parte se basa en la sustitución de piezas a intervalos de tiempo fijos, por tanto, el objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar el estado de la gestión del mantenimiento de la caldera, a través de la aplicación de indicadores de Confiabilidad, Mantenibilidad y Disponibilidad, aplicando el denominado análisis RAM (Reliability, Availability and Maintainability). Como resultado de la investigación se detectó que: la Confiabilidad es relativamente baja, la Mantenibilidad es media y la Disponibilidad es alta.Abstract This work is the result of the research carried out at the Canned Tuna. Canned tuna is its star product, which has led to setting the standards of one of its most critical equipment; the steam generator (the Cleaver Brooks CB-LE boiler), having as a starting point, the record of failures in a scheduled maintenance software already implemented. One part of the maintenance management that is currently applied in this boiler is based on the experience acquired by the personnel in charge of maintenance, while the other part is based on the replacement of parts at fixed time intervals, therefore, the objective This work is to evaluate the status of the maintenance management of the boiler, through the application of Reliability, Maintainability and Availability indicators, that is, applying the so-called RAM analysis (Reliability, Availability and Maintainability, for its acronym in English). . As a result of the investigation it was detected that: Reliability is relatively low, Maintainability is medium and Availability is high.
       
  • Analysis of a maintenance strategy to be implemented in electric
           transmission companies

    • Abstract: Abstract Maintenance management guarantees the life cycle of assets. The objective was to implement a tool to verify the relevance or not RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) estrategy for a company. With the agreement between the specialists, the effectiveness of the tool was approved because the reliability indicators of the survey are good. The results obtained, from its application in an electric transmission company, showed that it had in the first variable, based on the RCM, a reliability of 92 % considered excellent and of 72 % in the second variable, preparation of the company for its implementation, rated as acceptable, both obtained using Cronbach's Alpha. In addition, it was possible to establish the relevance of this strategy and it showed that the entity was not prepared to be able to assume it without first making changes.Resumen La gestión del mantenimiento garantiza el ciclo de vida de los activos. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo implementar una herramienta para la comprobación de la pertinencia o no de una estrategia de RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) para una empresa. Con el concierto entre los especialistas fue aprobada la eficacia de la herramienta debido a que los indicadores de confiabilidad de la encuesta son buenos. Los resultados obtenidos, de su aplicación en una empresa de transmisión eléctrica, expusieron que tuvo en la primera variable, basada en el RCM, una confiabilidad del 92 % considerado de excelente y de 72 % en la segunda variable, preparación de la empresa para su implementación, calificada de aceptable, ambas obtenidas mediante el Alfa de Cronbach. Además, se pudo establecer la pertinencia de esta estrategia para este campo de investigación y demostró que la entidad no estaba preparada para poder asumirla sin antes realizar cambios.
       
  • Methods used for the evaluation of coating-substrate systems adhesion

    • Abstract: Resumen La adherencia es uno de los parámetros que posee mayor influencia en el desempeño de recubrimientos depositados sobre sustratos metálicos sometidos a elevadas solicitaciones mecánicas. Este trabajo presenta una revisión de los métodos más utilizados, en específico se reseñaron los ensayos de tensión adhesiva, de indentación, de rayado, de corte y de adhesión por impacto con láser. Las ventajas y limitaciones de cada una de estas técnicas son presentadas y discutidas, así como las tendencias en su desarrollo actual.Abstract Adhesion is one of the parameters that has the greatest influence on the performance of ceramic coatings deposited on metal substrates subjected to high mechanical stress. This work presents a review of the most used methods, specifically the adhesive stress, indentation, scratch, cutting and adhesion tests by laser impact are expose. The advantages and limitations of each of these techniques are presented and discussed, as well as the trends in their current development.
       
  • Impact of COVID-19 on formation-evaluation process at undergraduate
           mechanical engineering program

    • Abstract: Resumen En el presente trabajo se analizaron 3 etapas en el enfrentamiento a la crisis sanitaria provocada por la covid-19 en la carrera universitaria de ingeniería mecánica de la Universidad Central Marta Abreu de Las Villas, UCLV. Se utilizó un enfoque cualitativo desde una perspectiva fenomenológica. Diversos factores favorecieron la complejidad del escenario educativo en tiempos de pandemia, tales como la disponibilidad de recursos tecnológicos, conectividad, preparación para el manejo de distintas herramientas virtuales y nuevas relaciones comunicacionales. Los resultados del estudio demostraron que la diversidad de respuestas que profesores y estudiantes produjeron, fueron un laboratorio de oportunidades para perfeccionar el proceso docente ante un escenario inédito, en donde el dominio de las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones y la fluidez del diálogo, fueron elementos centrales para éxito en la formación y evaluación de los estudiantes.Abstract In the present work, 3 stages were analyzed in the confrontation of the sanitary crisis caused by covid-19 in the undergraduate mechanical engineering programme at Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas. A qualitative approach from a phenomenological perspective was used. Several factors favored the complexity of the educational scenario in times of pandemic, such as the availability of technological resources, connectivity, preparation for the management of different virtual tools and new communicational relationships. The results of the study showed that the diversity of responses that teachers and students produced were a laboratory of opportunities to improve the teaching process in an unprecedented scenario, where the mastery of information and communication technologies and the fluency of dialogue were central elements for success in the training and evaluation of students.
       
  • Effect of pore diameter on tensile stress of welded ASTM A36 steel joints

    • Abstract: Resumen El siguiente estudio tuvo por objetivo la evaluación del efecto que tiene el diámetro de un poro descrito en la norma API (American Petroleum Institute) 1104 sobre el esfuerzo a tracción del acero ASTM A36, en una junta soldada. En el estudio se obtuvieron probetas normalizadas con diferentes diámetros de poros internos inducidos en el cordón de soldadura. Las discontinuidades se formaron con inclusiones de esferas de material cerámico Al2O3 de diferentes diámetros. Mediante inspección visual se comprobó la ausencia de discontinuidades superficiales, mientras que, para la presencia de porosidades y ausencia de otro tipo de discontinuidades internas se utilizó radiografía industrial. Adicionalmente, se incluye un análisis de esfuerzos mediante simulación numérica por elementos finitos, para una validación y extrapolación de los valores obtenidos en la experimentación. El esfuerzo último a tracción tanto experimental como en la simulación tuvo una diferencia inferior al 3 %, además el diámetro de los poros tuvo un comportamiento inversamente proporcional al esfuerzo último.Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pore diameter described in the API 1104 standard (American Petroleum Institute) on the tensile stress of a ASTM A36 steel welded joint. In the study, standardized samples with different diameters of induced internal pores were obtained. The discontinuities were formed with inclusions of spheres of ceramic material Al2O3 of different diameters. Using visual inspection, the absence of surface discontinuities was verified. Furthermore, the presence of porosities and also the absence of other types of internal discontinuities were verified by industrial radiography. Additionally, a numerical simulation to analyze the stresses involved in the welded joint was included using the finite element method. This simulation was used to validate and extrapolate the values obtained in the experimentation process. The results showed that the ultimate tensile stress, both experimentally and from the simulation has a difference of less than 3%, it was also concluded that the diameter of the pores has a behavior inversely proportional to the ultimate stress.
