  • Tracing the Sustainability Components in the Indian Tourism Curricula: An
           Exploratory Study

    • Abstract: Tourism for its intrinsic character of people, planet and profit has been an enduring area of research for sustainable policy and practices. Planning and implementing sustainable tourism in India are largely shaped and groomed in the classrooms. Currently, over two hundred universities across the country offer tourism programs. The current study involves a two-stage process. Available literature was first summarized into items of sustainability components required of a program structure such as sustainability aspects; viz. socio-economic, environmental, and business, case study approach, interaction with stakeholders, research & practices in local settings and timely update of the syllabus. Such components in the second stage of the research formed the basis of the questionnaire used for qualitative research involving senior academics responsible for designing the syllabi. Findings present a model on the effective integration of sustainable tourism theories and practices into tourism curricula.

  • The Effect of Environmental Education Open Inquiry Learning Kits on the
Environmental Literacy of Pre-service Biology Teachers

    • Abstract: Pre-service biology teachers’ environmental literacy is still generally low. It is necessary to improve their environmental literacy through the innovation of open inquiry learning kits. There are two primary aims of this study: (1) to develop appropriate open inquiry learning kits that can foster pre-service biology teachers’ environmental literacy in environmental education courses, (2) to examine the effectiveness of open inquiry learning kits in improving environmental literacy. This study used the procedure of the 4-D Thiagarajan model, i.e., four stages: (1) define, (2) design, (3) develop, and (4) disseminate. The products produced are open inquiry lesson plans, student worksheets, and environmental literacy test instruments. The product validation was carried out by experts in the field of environmental education and biology teaching and learning. The preliminary field testing and the main field testing were carried out in environmental education courses. The data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and written tests. The data were analyzed in a quantitative descriptive way through the calculation of the gain score. The results obtained from the research and development are open inquiry learning kits to improve the environmental literacy of students, which as a whole are suitable to use in environmental education lectures based on expert judgment. These open inquiry learning kits are not very effective in improving students’ environmental literacy based on the calculations of the gain score due to various shortcomings.

  • Developing an Environmental Impact Assessment Methodology for Disc Golf
           Courses

    • Abstract: The demand for outdoor recreational activities is rising. Therefore, it is important to pay more attention to their environmental impact and sustainability. However, there is a lack of methodology for measuring the impact of novel recreational activities, such as disc golf. This research aimed to address the existing environmental problems with disc golf in Estonia and elaborate on the methodology for assessing the environmental impact of disc golf courses and using it as a teaching tool for rising environmental awareness of the students. Based on existing research, the environmental impact assessment methodology for disc golf areas was developed and tested. The developed methodology is relevant for discovering negative impacts and for minimizing them. It could be used as an assessment tool for service providers and destination managers. Using the methodology as practical exercise proved to be an effective tool for rising the student’s environmental awareness.

  • A Conceptual Framework for Sustainable Promotion of a Positive School
           Climate: Context, Challenges, and Solutions

    • Abstract: There is a common understanding among researchers and practitioners that the learning environment is a key aspect of the adjustment and well-being of students and teachers. There is a necessity to translate the findings of individual studies on building positive learning environments to a comprehensive and integral framework to sustain and promote a positive school climate using a holistic approach. Sustainability in this theoretical paper is approached as a dynamic, continuous, and long-term process of consciously and consistently implementing actions, strategies, and values at all levels and in all environments to facilitate and maintain a positive climate in educational settings. This conceptual approach, based on action research in the fields of education and psychology, will help to broaden perspectives on both positive school climates and sustainability to improve the understanding and practices of all stakeholders in education. As such, this article presents a conceptual framework as well as guidelines for the assessment of sustainably promoting a positive school climate.

  • Effectiveness of Interdisciplinary Instruction in Pre-service Teacher
Education for Sustainability: Issues From the Big History and the Study of
           Climate Change

    • Abstract: The paper analyzes the impact of interdisciplinary instruction on the perception, awareness, and knowledge about climate change of 102 Spanish pre-service primary teachers using a pre- and post-test design. Our findings demonstrate that pre- to post-test scores significantly increased in all the studied categorizations and that students’ academic background influences score improvement. Data also reveal that there is a positive and significant correlation between teaching capability perception and knowledge, suggesting that knowledge instruction is crucial for teachers’ confidence in climate change education. The study also confirms the opportunity to explore sustainable teacher education from an interdisciplinary perspective, carrying out congruent teaching from different approaches on a complex phenomenon to understand it in a holistic way.

  • Social Ecology and Environmental Diversity in Teacher Education

    • Abstract: This paper offers reflections on the development and potential of a transformative teacher education project as one component of the Professional Development Programs (PDPs) at the Faculty of Education of a comprehensive Canadian university. The work of our teacher education program is set in Vancouver and utilizes the lenses of social ecology and environmental diversity (or SEEDs) to examine the roles of teachers in bringing an awareness of local/global sustainability issues to student learning experiences. Using auto-ethnographical methods our project reflects on a critical and place-based teacher education agenda highlighting democratic and participatory methods in its approach. We use our experiences combined with relevant literature to explore what inspirations might be drawn from our evolving approach. Drawing from Bookchin’s social ecology, our teacher education practices are based on the conviction that most of our present ecological problems originate with/in deep-seated social problems. It follows, from this view, that ecological problems cannot be understood, let alone solved, without a more careful understanding of our existing society and the irrationalities that often dominate it. In our most recent work, our teacher education candidates identified strongly with the related theoretical notions of Social Ecology and Diversity; hence, our identity (as seeds or seedlings) is in a state of flux as we continue to move and adapt to our current socio-political conditions.

  • Online Adult Education for Sustainable Development: The Analysis of the
Consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Latvia

    • Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has left significant consequences at every level of education, including adult education. In order to adapt to the restriction caused by the pandemic, adult education institutions all around the world were forced to transform the way how the educational process was being organized. By introducing various web-related technologies, the physical place of teaching and learning processes has become a less significant factor, thereby, potentially, contributing to the inclusiveness of education and, as a result, to sustainable development. The paper aims to analyze how the recent transformation of adult education caused by the pandemic between 2020 and 2022 contributed to the sustainable development of Latvia. To achieve the aim, the following research methods are used: a scientific literature review to investigate the concepts of sustainable development and online adult education as well as their potential correlation, a survey of adult education institutions in Latvia, as well as statistical data analysis of adult education indicators. The main findings of the article: during the pandemic when the in-person teaching process was restricted, the Latvian adult education sector experienced unprecedented digital transformation. The transformation positively contributed to the improvement of not only the digital skills of teachers and learners but also to the sustainable development of Latvia by facilitating access to potential learners living in rural areas and regions.

  • Diagnosis of Blue and Sustainable Entrepreneurship in University Education
           in Spain: A Case Study

    • Abstract: University education, in terms of its social and environmental responsibility, plays an important role in promoting local and global sustainability from its fundamental corporate principles: “Mission, Vision and Values”. Four dimensions associated with fourteen values related to blue and sustainable entrepreneurship were considered in this study: “Entrepreneurship values”, “Personal values”, “Social values” and “Environmental values” (the variables that are the object of this diagnostic study), which enabled the internal correlations that occurred between them to be seen, according to their level of presence in degree qualification syllabi at public universities in the region of Andalusia (Spain). The main conclusion we have found is the importance of prioritizing the “Personal” dimension in university education as an exogenous variable that conditions the social and entrepreneurship values, which also has a direct effect on the values related to the “Environmental” dimension, with the purpose of achieving a balanced and significant presence of values related to blue and sustainable entrepreneurship.

  • Project-based Learning at a Saudi University: Faculty and Student Feedback

    • Abstract: Education for sustainable development (ESD) flourishes with student-centered learning methods, including project-based learning (PBL). These methods are still new to Saudi Arabian university students who tend to experience teacher-centered approaches. Saudi Arabia’s recent policy decision to shift to a knowledge-based economy that respects sustainability will benefit from PBL-enhanced learning. This small-scale qualitative study investigated faculty and students’ feedback on their experience with PBL. Four faculty members (three female, one male in accounting, sports management, and information management) and six female students (financial sciences or accounting) from an Eastern Province university college were interviewed (45 minutes) in 2020–2021 using Zoom. Without exception, the instructors were in favor of PBL as a teaching strategy, and students’ overall experience could be described as positive. A thematic analysis (89 % inter-rater reliability coefficient) generated three themes: (a) beneficial learning strategy, (b) beneficial but challenging learning strategy with room for improvement, and (c) sustained student support over the semester with exceptions. Saudi universities are encouraged to employ PBL in all courses and use assessment methods conducive to student-centered learning. Universities are encouraged to streamline the project approval process, which was quite involved herein. Communications with community partnerships are important, and faculty and students should be thoroughly in-serviced and oriented to PBL.

  • The Relationship Between Sustainability and Food Consumption in Teacher
           Training

    • Abstract: We explore the relationships that future teachers establish between food consumption and sustainability, as well as their intentions to act and their competences in ESD, after a training program. Three instruments were designed and analyzed within the methodological framework of qualitative content analysis. The results showed that, although the future teachers set adequate relationships, they still had significant difficulties in accepting the need for ambitious changes in their diets. Their educational proposals are focused on the diagnosis of the problems instead of the assessment of the sustainability of eating habits and the empowering of learners to take responsible decisions and actions.

  • Reflections of Good Practice of Infusing ESD to Improve Education Outcomes
for Indigenous Learners in Light of a Global Pandemic

    • Abstract: The COVID-19 global pandemic presented an unprecedented challenge to the sustainability strategies and initiatives of many nations. In many countries, education strategies and funding were negatively impacted and, consequently, especially vulnerable groups were highly affected, amongst them Indigenous communities around the world. As Indigenous communities were already amongst the most vulnerable before 2020, a strategically and well-planned recovery from this pandemic would be vital to secure their well-being.This article offers reflections on the potential of infusing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the classroom, the school and the community as a whole, to deal with known and yet unprecedented sustainability challenges in presenting commonalities of 32 good practice reports from 21 countries collected in advance and during the global pandemic.
Authors make the point of considering the pandemic and its widespread impact as yet another sustainability challenge and position ESD as a potential tool to achieve quality education and unleash the full potential of education for society when planning recovery efforts in hope for a better future of Indigenous communities in the long term.As the good practices were also included in a report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to the 48th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, focusing on the post-pandemic recovery efforts for Indigenous Peoples, further thoughts on both official reports and their alignment with the overall 2030 Agenda from an ESD perspective are included.

  • State of the Research on Teacher Education and Sustainability: A
           Bibliometrics Analysis

    • Abstract: Qualitative education is one of the key contributors in achieving the goal of sustainability. Several studies mention that the sustainability curriculum and educators can play an immense role in developing awareness in practicing the concept of sustainability. Relatively there is no comprehensive study to typify the recent contributions of teacher education for sustainability. In this light, the aim of the study is to understand the progress of the research on teacher education for sustainability (TES) in terms of growth, evolution, influence and significant research themes. To achieve the aim of the study, 1782 documents indexed in the Scopus database over three decades starting from 1991 to 2020 were analyzed by using bibliometric analysis. The data are visualized in the paper by using VOSviewer and Tableau. Results show that there has been a significant increase in yearly publications and citations over the years, trending research papers, productive authors, institutions and countries and thematic areas of research. Most frequently published journal has a considerable cite score and quartile. Universities from Australia published the most. The most commonly published themes are education for sustainability, Agenda 21, sustainable development education, environmental education, and later the focus is shifted to teacher training, teachers, education, values, teaching and education policy, sustainability competencies. Future research should focus on blended learning, digital learning, other modern tools and techniques to achieve the goal of sustainable development as well as to address the issue of teaching sustainability during uncertainty conditions.

  • Is Sustainable Development Really Sustainable – Theoretical Reflections,
Statistics and the Need for Changes

    • Abstract: The aim of the article is to explain holistically the main provisions of sustainable development in the nature-society-human system based on the methodology for analyzing changes in energy flows and the power of socio-economic systems. The authors consider the development of society as a creative process aimed at changing the direction and speed of free energy flows (useful power) in Space and Time. They also consider sustainable development in the nature-society-human system to be consistent with the laws of the global evolution of living nature and the laws of the historical development of humankind. The paper focuses on key questions concerning the new concepts of sustainable development; the methodology for designing the sustainable development using the concept of energy flows in open, non-equilibrium stable systems and power change analysis approach. The results of the main positions of the models and their interpretation are presented based on the statistical data of United States of America (USA) in the period of 1960–2021.One of the most important primary things in order to bring about changes in people's thinking, understanding and attitude towards sustainability issues is their education in different forms – formal education and non-formal education opportunities. Creating an interdisciplinary approach and explaining sustainability as a set of economic, social and ecological factors also play a crucial role in raising public awareness of sustainability issues.

  • Knowledge, Perceptions and Readiness of Nigeria's Beginning Teachers for
           Sustainability Education

    • Abstract: Beginning teachers should be adequately prepared for their roles as propagators of sustainable development core messages. Using a mixed method approach, this study assessed current knowledge, perceptions and readiness of beginning teachers for sustainability education. Two hundred (200) randomly selected final-year undergraduates from the Faculty of Education of the Nigerian University participated in the study. Results revealed gaps in the awareness and understanding of sustainability concepts and issues among the respondents. However, a high level of interest in handling the core issues was expressed. The respondents differed according to gender and age, but there were no significant differences according to mode of entry. The study recommended infusion of sustainability concepts in teacher education curricula and promotion of sustainable development issues through students' activities within and outside university campuses to address knowledge gap and sustain interests in sustainability education among beginning teachers.

  • Using Citizen Science Tools for Distance Field Study of Botanical Cycle
Disciplines in Times of Pandemic and Beyond

    • Abstract: Humanity has existed in special living conditions since March 11, 2020 when WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. This coronavirus disease has already taken more than 6.55 million of people's lives from almost 625 million of officially confirmed cases of people infected around the world at the beginning of October 2022. Lot of university lecturers, teachers and researchers are concerned by new challenges in the education and science process. Therefore, many new recommendations and methodologies have been published for effective teaching in the pandemic time focusing on different forms of distance digital education. Certainly, the process has been actual for biological disciplines too where the biggest problems appeared with the organisation of field courses. Every country and even every university have been looking for optimal ways within their epidemic situation according to country restriction rules. Therefore, we have generalized this experience, as well as developed protocols on example of iNaturalist platform (https://www.inaturalist.org/) for effective use of citizen science tools not just for distance learning of botanical cycle disciplines in the pandemic time and beyond, but also for collecting valuable data about plant distribution during this process. We present a future-oriented vision of the solution of biodiversity and sustainability education.

Education' An Analysis of Nature-Based Learning in Higher Education Using
           Multispecies Ethnography

    • Abstract: The multiple crises of the 21st century once again highlight the significant role of sustainable education in all educational institutions. Particularly in higher education, the inclusion of nature and animals in the curricula is underrepresented. Using the method of Multispecies Ethnography, which recognizes the interconnectedness and inseparability of humans and other life forms of the more-than-human world, such as plants or animals, this paper discusses the presence of nature in online-based nature and outdoor learning in higher education. This study examines nature-based learning in higher education. It analyses the role of nature in the learning process in general and in sustainable education in particular. The results of the study show that a relationship with nature leads to a change in one's worldview, which is evidence of the methodological importance of introducing nature in the learning process. The results also illustrate that – despite digitalization – direct interaction with nature is essential for a paradigm shift in education.
