  • Practices for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and Neglect

    • Authors: Havvanur TORAMAN; Feyza ÖZKAYA, Mehmet BULUT, Ayşenur ÜNAL, Nur KESEN, Serap DAŞBAŞ
Abstract: Old age, which is a stage of human life, is a period in which the individual loses their social role in society and experiences disability, and therefore the need for social support increases. Elderly neglect and abuse emerge as the most important problems experienced during this period. It is seen that the negligence and abuse of elderly people as a social problem does not have sufficient visibility at the level of politics and society. However, studies show that elderly care and rehabilitation place a serious economic and social burden on society and emphasize the importance of preventing abuse before it even occurs. In the study, it is aimed to provide information about the scope, importance, objectives and prevention interventions of elderly neglect and abuse prevention practices. It is aimed to inform both the elderly and the community by providing information about prevention practices, as well as to contribute to policy regulations on the issue. In the study, it is determined that elder abuse is a long-term process and that multidimensional and multidisciplinary work is more effective in intervening in elder abuse. As a result, it is thought that the study would contribute to the sustainability of social well-being by protecting older people from abuse and supporting their social functionality.

  • The Evaluation of Istanbul’s Urban Teksture through Postage Stamps

    • Authors: Serkan AYCİL
Abstract: The research aims to introduce Istanbul, which has a deep-rooted and historical past and was the capital of three different empires, through philatelic objects in a different style. The physical losses on immovable cultural assets caused by the changes in modernization and urban sociology revealed the necessity of the study. The ancient city, which hosts sea and land cultures together, witnesses the historical accumulation of both Turks and Europeans living in this geography. In this context, walls, waterways, obelisks, bridges, places of worship, castles, lighthouses, towers, train stations, mansions, mansions, mansions, bazaars, museums, fountains, palaces, nostalgic trams and cisterns, which has become the symbol of the city and describes the urban experience, are processed together with the sociological texture of the city in order to create a thematic synthesis. The fiction, created to reinterpret the concept of promotion and tourism on a cultural axis, includes the idea of raising awareness for the preservation of existing artifacts. It is also thought that besides contributing to the promotion of the city, the study job would help researchers develop their visual thinking skills.

    • Authors: Yüksel ERDAŞ; Fatih ECER
Abstract: With the discovery of the internet, there have been significant changes in people's lifestyles and habits. Businesses have tended to make their sales with the internet, and people have started to meet their needs more on the internet. With Covid-19, which emerged in 2019, the internet has begun to have an even more important place in consumers' lives. Consumers have tended to meet their needs through online shopping platforms due to the fear of illness. In this context, in the study, the performance of online shopping platforms during the outbreak period is analyzed with the AHP and MAIRCA integrated model, in line with the five main criteria and their twenty-three sub-criteria. In this context, the importance weights of the criteria are highlighted with the AHP method. The MAIRCA method, on the other hand, is utilized to rank online shopping sites. The AHP results reveal that “affordable price”, “quarantine period”, and “fear of being infected” are the most crucial determinants of the performance of online shopping platforms, respectively. Further, Trendyol is highlighted as the most successful shopping site. The study can be a guide for online shopping platforms in assessing their own performances during the pandemic period.

  • The Role of Voters’ Empathy and Altruistic Attitudes on
           E-Participation Behaviors

    • Authors: İdris ŞİMŞEK; Şakir GÜLER
Abstract: E-participation refers to the new generation of political participation activities realized through digital communication technologies. E-participation activities allow for broader political expression by including the individual in the digital agenda. The research presented in this context includes the e-participation activities of the voters in terms of empathy and altruistic attitudes. In addition, the situations in which the participants' psychological attitudes (empathy, altruism) and e-participation activities differ, are questioned, especially for demographic factors. 886 voters residing in Isparta province participated in the study. The study is built on the relational screening model within the quantitative method. Findings show that there is a negative relationship between empathy and altruistic attitudes and e-participation activities. On the other hand, the participants have different levels of empathy and e-engagement according to gender and field of study. Female participants have higher scores in emotional response and cognitive empathy subscales than males. There is no relationship between altruistic attitudes and the policy-following habits of the voters. No relationship is found between the "emotional response" sub-variable of empathy and the "policy follow-up" and "political debate" sub-variables of e-participation.

  • The Effect of the Depreciation of Turkish Lira on Turkey’s Foreign

    • Authors: Ezgi KOPUK; Oytun MEÇİK
Abstract: The study aims to determine the effect of depreciation on Turkey's imports and exports after the 2008 global crisis. For this purpose, the period 2008-Q1:2020-Q4 is analyzed. For real effective exchange rate, foreign trade, and inflation variables; Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF), Phillips Perron (PP) and Zivot-Andrews (ZA) for unit root tests and short-long term coefficient estimations; Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), Dynamic Least Squares Method (DOLS) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares Method (FMOLS) methods are applied, respectively. Causality between variables is determined by Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis. The findings of the analysis conducted with two models are as follows: i) In the short run, the real effective exchange rate decreases imports. In the long run, both the real effective exchange rate and inflation reduce imports. ii) While REDK decreased exports in the short run, it increased inflation, and both variables decreased exports in the long run. iii) There is bidirectional causality between imports and inflation, and unidirectional causality from inflation to exports. Based on the findings, considering the negative effects of inflation and the real effective exchange rate on imports and exports, it wouldbe possible to eliminate the foreign trade and macroeconomic imbalances by reducing inflation and increasing production.

  • Investigation of Non-Communicable Diseases and Risk Factors among Elderly
People in Turkey with Association Rules Analysis and Social Network

    • Authors: Şenol DEMİRCİ; Sıdıka KAYA
Abstract: While infectious diseases were the biggest health threats in the past, both non-communicable diseases and their risk factors have become the biggest health threats today. The elderly are more affected by non-communicable diseases than the young, and they face the problem of multimorbidity. In this context, the aim of the study is to evaluate 1) the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and risk factors, 2) the number of multimorbidities/risk factors of 2,458 individuals aged 65 and over who participated in the Turkish Health Survey (THS) conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) in 2019, and 3) to examine the multimorbidity/risk factor patterns by association rules analysis and social network analysis. According to the results of the research, low back and neck disorders and diabetes are diseases with a higher prevalence compared to other diseases. It is determined that lack of physical activity, obesity/overweight, and hypertension are risk factors with higher prevalence compared to other risk factors. Fifty-one percent of the individuals have multimorbidity and 64% have 2-4 risk factors. According to the results of association rules analysis and social network analysis, low back and neck disorders are the most co-existing non-communicable diseases. Among the risk factors, obesity/overweight and lack of physical activity are the most co-existing risk factors. Non-communicable diseases, multimorbidity, and risk factors are important health problems for elderly individuals in Turkey, and policymakers and health care managers should take the necessary precautions.

  • Resource Use in Advanced Renal Cancer with the Payer Institution
Perspective: The Case of Training and Research Hospital

    • Authors: Hüseyin DEMİR; Pınar YALÇIN BALÇIK
Abstract: The study aims to evaluate advanced renal cancer disease in the context of health economics and to investigate the resource-use related to the disease with the payer institution perspective. The study is descriptive and cross-sectional, and population consists of 2,611 patients. The data falls into the categories of service, medicine and material. Analyzes are done using the data of all patients. R program is utilized to discover and visualize the data. According to the findings, 52.7% of the patients (1,376 patients) underwent nephrectomy operation. Services, drugs, and materials are used extensively in the disease. Although services and materials are used extensively, the costs of these resources are partially reimbursed, whereas almost all costs related to drugs are reimbursed. Therefore, the drugs have a challenging burden on the institution. On the other hand, the amount paid for the resources used in providing services has gradually increased. This trend suggests that the burden on the institution’s budget is high and it may gradually increase. The study points to the finding that the treatment of the disease has a drug-intensive character. This finding, in return, makes it necessary to measure the health outcomes brought about by chemotherapy drugs.

  • Evaluation of Financial Performance in Hospitals with Different Analysis

    • Authors: Ferda IŞIKÇELİK; Meryem TURGUT, İsmail AĞIRBAŞ
Abstract: The purpose of the study is to analyze the financial performances of hospital businesses in Turkey. To that end, it is made use of the sectoral financial statements published by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) under the sector code Q-86-Human Health Services and the sub-sector code Q-861-Hospital Services. The financial tables of the Hospital Services Sector between 2009 and 2019 are evaluated using the DuPont analysis technique, the Financial Strength Index, and the Hospital Financial Viability Index. Employing three distinct methods to measure the financial performance of hospitals, it is found in the study that hospitals have low profitability, high liabilities, low short-term solvency, high costs, and expenditures. In addition, it is determined that the financial performance of hospitals fluctuates. In line with the findings of the study, it would be beneficial for hospitals to take measures to increase their profitability, reduce the use of foreign resources, improve short-term debt solvency, and reduce costs and expenses. In future research, it is recommended to use different financial analysis techniques for financial performance measurement and evaluate the relationship between these techniques.

  • Prediction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions for Turkey Using ANFIS Method

    • Authors: Ahmet SEL; Berrak TEKGÜN
Abstract: Today, global high levels of industrialization, rapid population growth, unconsciously consumed energy resources and high energy demand have brought about an increase in the amount of carbon emissions. The increase in greenhouse gas emissions has come to a position that threatens economic development, sustainable growth, climate conditions, urbanization and most importantly economic power in Turkey as well as in the world. In the study, the Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) method, in which both fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks are integrated, is used for the estimation of carbon dioxide emissions. In the first part of the application, the monthly data set covering the years 1998-2018 for the explanatory variables of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), population, exports, and imports and retrospective 2019-2020 carbon emissions (R2=0.964) are estimated. In the second part, using the data obtained in the first part, the variables (t-12, t-11, t-10, mean-t-12, mean-t-11, mean-t-10) for monthly carbon emission values (t) are used. Forecasting success (R2=0.99) is estimated for 2021, 2022 and 2023. In this context, the findings of the study are evaluated within the scope of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Climate Agreement. It is expected that the results obtained would help decision makers in their projects and plans to reduce carbon emissions.

Bourdieu’s Concepts of Field and Capital

    • Authors: Elif BAŞ
Abstract: In the study, the movie of Rüzgarda Salınan Nilüfer is tried to be analyzed sociologically based on a Bourdieuan approach, specific to two families representing the middle class, and in line with the concepts of space, capital and habitus. The movie has a narrative through two families representing the new middle classes. On the one part, there is a family with a lower cultural capital density but a higher economic capital density; on the other hand, there is a second family with a higher cultural capital intensity but a lower economic capital intensity. Attempts to establish supremacy in the cultural field, the differences in the economic field, the cultural capital accumulation, eating and drinking practices in the context of the movie, divided into four sections of Bourdieuan tried to be considered from one point of view.            Cognitive Flexibility of Healthcare Manager Canditates

    • Authors: Işıl USTA KARA; Aysu KURTULDU
Abstract: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between the decision-making styles and cognitive flexibility of healthcare manager candidate. For this purpose, research is conducted on healthcare manager candidates who have an undergraduate education in Health Management. The survey method is used as a data collection method in the research. The data obtained from 334 participants are analysed through SPSS and AMOS programs. The relationship between cognitive flexibility and decision-making styles is tested with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). According to participants’ statements about cognitive flexibility, “I would like to listen and evaluate alternative solutions to overcome a problem (5.39)” is the highest mean. On the other hand, when the statements about the decision-making behaviours of the participants are examined, "I need to think carefully about the problem in order to make a decision" is the statement with the most participation with an average of 4.24. Cognitive flexibility and rational decision-making, impulsive decision-making, spontaneous decision-making styles have statistically significant relationships. It is thought that conducting applications based on observation, interpretation, and analytical thinking in places such as different administrative units of hospitals would be effective in improving the decision-making styles of healthcare manager candidates and increasing their cognitive flexibility.

    • Authors: Meftune ÖZBAKIR UMUT; Tuğçe ÜNER
Abstract: Research process on the product to be purchased constitutes an important stage of the purchasing process. However, this stage has gained a different dimension with the digital development experienced today. Especially with the development of mobile vehicles, consumers are increasingly comparing physical stores and online stores. The consumer, who wants to take advantage of the positive aspects of both the physical store and the online store, examines the products in the physical store, visits the online store simultaneously with his mobile device for information and price research, and finally, the consumer decides to purchase them from an online store if the products are cheaper. This, namely showrooming, negatively affects physical retailers. In this context, the study aims to understand the consumer showing the showrooming behaviour and to develop suggestions for retailers. The data collected by the survey method are tested with quantitative data analysis methods using SPSS program. In the study, it is concluded that both the practices of online stores in the communication process strengthen the consumers' perception of "low and discounted prices", and showrooming behaviour is carried out by consumers with high price sensibility and suggestions about the sector are presented.

  • Financial Impacts of Covid-19 Pandemic for Turkish Public Hospitals

    • Authors: Aziz KÜÇÜK
Abstract: The aim of the study is to assess financial implications of Covid-19 pandemic on Turkish public hospitals and to discuss Turkish government's responses. A comparative analysis is carried out with the medical and financial data of Turkish public hospitals between March-December 2019 and March-December 2020. Outpatient services decreased by approximately 49%, inpatient admissions dropped by %35. Due to this decrease in the number of patients, outpatient revenues decreased by 37.8%, while inpatient revenues increased by 6.3% thanks to reimbursement supports by the Social Security Institution (SSI). On the other hand, total hospital expenses increased by 24% with the impact of Covid-19-related expenses. This increase is largely caused by performance-based supplementary payments, drugs, and operating expenses. Prospective global budget model helps healthcare financing stability for Turkish public hospitals. Public hospitals receive their global budgets to compensate for revenue shortfalls. The SSI also try to compensate the financial losses of public and private hospitals with additional reimbursement supports. However, policymakers and managers should prepare for the change of paradigm in the healthcare system and should concentrate to cost-effective policies (such as tele-health services) in hospitals as a result of Covid-19 demands.
