  • The effect of adventure tourists' profile characteristics toward
           wellness dimensions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Melissa Jeanette Lötter, Lisa Charmaine Welthagen
      Pages: 168 - 179
Abstract: Wellness tourism's multidimensional nature lends to multifaceted travel experiences that incorporate a large and diverse set of activities. As many opportunities for different organisational prospects are created, the impact of adventure tourist profile characteristics on the respondents' physical, emotional, social, environmental, intellectual, occupational, and spiritual dimensions of wellness are investigated. The sample population included all residents and visitors of the Tshwane Metropolitan area that partake in adventure activities. Random sampling was used for the total sample frame of N = 213. This study employed an on-site survey based on a quantitative approach with a self-completing questionnaire as the research instrument. Descriptive statistics conducted in this study indicate how each dimension of wellness relates to adventure tourism activities in which the respondents participated. The results suggest that adventure tourism activities can be used as a tool for improving adventure tourists' lifestyles as it has an overall positive effect/impact on the respondents' wellness. Thus, by applying the dimensional model of wellness, tourism, specifically adventure tourism organisations, can develop successful wellness products and services by becoming aware of each wellness dimension's interconnectedness.

      Authors: Sheetal Kapoor, Jigmet Wangdus

Abstract: Globally, key tourist destinations are facing the challenges of overtourism. In recent times, with modern technology and the establishment of affordable airlines has given a boast to mass tourism, the unrestrained demand has a negative impact on tourist spots and local communities. This paper adds to the literature by presenting a comprehensive model and an empirical framework to better understand the environmental challenges due to rapid growth of tourism in the Himalayan region over the short span and explains how locals are dealing to overcome these challenges. An exploratory research design was carried to achieve the research objectives empirically to understand the perception of local resident towards overtourism and the impact of tourism on environment. In recent past Ladakh is experiencing global warming in the form of rising temperature, lesser snowfall, strain on water resources, etc. Results validate that local community are concerned about the negative impact of overtourism and systematic efforts and policy formulation is required to protect the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh.

  • The perceptions turned chaff at the destination – experience effect on
           cultural tourists' satisfaction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Jaseela Thanikkad, Suresh Kumar
      Pages: 215 - 234
Abstract: Cultural tourism as a branch of tourism has acquired dimensions of immense significance in the economic development of destinations, across the globe, enriched with a plethora of art-forms, folklores and rich cultural heritage. The promotion of such destinations in terms of induced perceptions and the experiences matching the expectations of tourists has been predominantly the marketers' visualisations of the means and measures of consumer satisfaction. The focus of this research is on destinations of cultural importance, in Kerala, an Indian state acclaimed to be one of the ten paradises of the world by the National Geographic Traveler. It aims to redefine pull motivators as pre-visit destination perceptions and probe how such perceived expectations and the post-visit destination experiences predict the tourists' satisfaction, which in turn reflects customer loyalty. The PLS path model results show that while destination perceptions and experiences significantly predict tourists' satisfaction, such satisfaction fails to predict loyalty.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the key factors influencing Arab college students' travel decisions in terms of their selection of tourist attractions, accommodation, mode of transport, restaurants and travel agency. The study also sought to identify whether there are significant differences in travel decisions of Arab college students that could be attributed to socio-demographic variables. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 200 Arab college students. The study revealed that reputation and quality were always the most influencing factors on Arab college students' travel decisions, especially when they are choosing accommodation, mode of transport, restaurants and travel agency. On the other hand, the study showed that Arab college students are less likely to be affected by media publicity when choosing tourist attractions, accommodation, mode of transport, restaurants and travel agency. Finally, the study discussed both the theoretical and managerial implications related to Arab students' travel market, and possible future research directions.
