  • RFID traceability for structure fires: Lethbridge fire department case

      Abstract: National Fire Protection Association has identified disorientation within building structures as a leading cause of critical injury for firefighters. Firefighters frequently encounter unfamiliar environments which are often obstructed with heavy smoke and hazards. Detecting an injured or distressed firefighter is dependent on navigational systems which are limited in scope and capability. Radio frequency identification (RFID) can be adopted as a beneficial technology for firefighters' navigation. This research proposes firefighters' safety and accountability improvements via case study. Through collaboration with the Lethbridge fire department, AB, Canada, a critical assessment of implementing RFID within their work was assessed by gaining the experts opinions. Interviews and surveys are gathered and the business process reengineering (BPR) model is used for analysing the practicability of RFID technology. Results suggested sewing an active RFID tag onto the back of upper left arm on a firefighter's turnout coat. This recommendation adapts current technology designs for firefighter's efficiently and traceability improvements.

  • Clustering based trust and group key management for secure communications
           in MANET

      Abstract: In mobile ad hoc network (MANET), clustering without encryption and decryption may result in security issue. In order to overcome this issue, in this paper we propose to develop a trust based clustering and group key management for secure communications in MANET. In this technique, the cluster heads are selected based on the total trust degree and partial trust. Then each cluster member node takes a valid certificate from offline configuration. The cluster member maintains a logic key's tree that includes individual key's tree and a common key. The generated cluster keys broadcasted and member leave and join is handled in the cluster. After sharing the generated group keys with group members, the cluster head generates polynomials and based on which intra group keys are generated for intra-group communication. By simulation results, we show that the proposed technique enhances the network security and offers secure communication.

  • Sustainable supply chain model for deteriorating items incorporating
           inflation and green investment

      Abstract: In the globalisation era, greenhouse emission is a major atmospheric problem in entire world. It increases the level of carbon dioxide and methane. In this paper, a sustainable supply chain inventory decision making problem is derived by incorporating the effect of inflation on costs and encouraging green investment when demand is dependent on seasonality and frequency of advertisement of the products. In addition, deterioration, shortages and partial backlogging are considered to meet customer satisfaction. In stock out situation lost sales are partially backlogged where backlogging rate is constant. The aim of this study is to illustrate optimal run time at which stock reaches zero which can maximise the total profit. Solution procedure, numerical assessment and sensitivity analysis are conducted to show the application of the theoretical model in real- life scenario. The findings expressed that the proposed inventory problem is very beneficial in the retail business to maintain environmental emission.

  • Integration of flexible manufacturing and assembly using Kanban and
           simulation approach

      Abstract: Purpose - This research aims to minimise the total cost function and eliminate Mudas by simulation, the Flexible manufacturing and assembly, and Kanban approaches. Design/methodology/approach - The approaches used in this paper include FMS, FMA, Kanban, and discrete-event simulation. Findings - Implementing FMS, FMA, and Kanban increases production, reduces the number of labours, WIP, and total cycle time, and increases average labour utilisation. Thus, the total cost is minimised. Research limitations/implications - The study is limited to large manufacturing firms and does not consider service industries or small and medium enterprises. Originality/value - This research suggested a Novel approach using the flexible assembly and production, the Kanban logic, redesigning the factory layout, analysing the utilisation of the labour, and using the AnyLogic simulation approaches together. Also, the overall equipment effectiveness is calculated in this model.

This environment is evolving rapidly due to market demands and enormous applications. This paper presents a comprehensive review of leading social media analytics tools available for various social networking platforms. A comparative analysis has been carried out for the free and subscription based tools to judge their suitability for specific organisation. Various challenges are faced by businesses in adopting social media analytical tools to support the knowledge based business strategies. Correspondingly, the present day corporate challenges from the perspective of social media analytics in its adoption for corporate decisions have been outlined. This work will be very much useful for organisations in identifying the various tools available in the market, which may help them take knowledge based strategic decisions.
