  • Conceptual design of mechatronic products using PDS-TRIZ

      Abstract: Creativity is very important in the conceptual design stage for mechatronic products. The innovation and development of mechatronic products usually cover different knowledge domains. Traditionally, ideation comes intuitively or logically. However, this depends on the creativity and ideas of the designer. As such, tools; such as Pugh's total design process (PTDP) and the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ); have emerged to help designers design and develop their products. Therefore, this paper attempted to present a conceptual design strategy; namely PDS-TRIZ; by combining product design specification (PDS) and TRIZ to improve PTDP. A locomotive lower limb exoskeleton (LLLE); a device used to assist paraplegics regain walking ability; was used to demonstrate the capability of the proposed PDS-TRIZ method. Our study proved that the proposed PDS-TRIZ could be used to develop conceptual designs for mechatronic products.

  • Virtual product development of vehicle drives

      Abstract: The development of vehicle drives is undergoing radical change. New electrical drive technologies have to be developed and the complexity is massively increasing. The paper shows the necessary improvements to the product development process (PDP) at Porsche AG whereby digitalisation is the core element. Virtual hardware development and software calibration are introduced at the first stage. Early validation is possible through separate milestones and release criteria. At the second stage, the PDP is restructured with the aid of systems engineering and all requirements are derived from the customer level. This means there is potential to use customer field data in a targeted manner for design and validation purposes on all system levels. At the third stage virtual and physical validation are merged. The result is a common, optimised validation program. Practical application examples are presented and current challenges that are both methodical and procedural in nature are outlined.

  • Product portfolio management in industrial design: a model of design
           strategies for mature portfolios

      Abstract: To achieve progression in a product portfolio, companies employ industrial designers to aid in the development and creation of new products. Researchers have shown that industrial designers play a consolidating role at both strategic and operational management levels due to the need to incorporate requirements from several company functions, such as brand, research and development, production, economics and senior management. This article investigates how to expand the ways in which a product portfolio may be extended and updated, from an industrial design perspective. Seven product portfolio development strategies were identified. Inspired by studies of competitors' influence on an existing portfolio, a theoretical descriptive model was developed: the Industrial Design Product Portfolio Management model, which positions the suggested product portfolio development strategies in relation to existing and competing products. The findings may advance our current understanding of existing product portfolio management strategies and the connection between management and product design. Thus, it could be a useful framework for academics, teachers and professionals.

  • Configuring systems verification, validation and testing plan under
           various constraints and unpredicted events

      Abstract: Verification, Validation and Testing (VVT), are important system engineering activities that need to be exercised continuously during the life cycle of any product. As in reality, the program manager may need to address the VVT strategy during the following two phases: the planning phase, in which different VVT plans are explored to choose an optimal strategy; and the execution phase, in which uncertainty unfolds and the program manager has to deal and also manage unforeseen events. A cost-effective approach to the VVT strategy would emphasise the ability to make tradeoffs and configure a VVT plan by estimating project budget, duration, risk and resources. We present a generalised model for configuring system design and tailor it to generate the optimal VVT methods in the VVT process. We focus both on the sensitivity analysis of the analytical model to the variability of model inputs and also address the uncertainty aspects of the model to demonstrate the robustness of our model. We also discuss the generalised model flexibility to adapt and address other engineering issues; for example, tailoring the model to minimise resources as opposed to maximising quality in the VVT process, or even identifying and managing overspecification in projects.
