  • Operations and Supply Chain Optimization – The New Era Model

    • Authors: Rajesh Chennattu Sasidharan Nair
      Pages: 1 - 20
Abstract: Purpose:This article is an investigative study of optimization of supply chain and hence operations in the new era of digitization and identifies scope for future studies and further development of ways to achieve operational excellence. Design/ Methodology/ Approach:This research uses literature review and case studies to highlight the evolution of supply chain in the present era. The focus is on operational modifications the took place following the disruptions caused by such factors as technological innovations and global pandemic. This study employs the method of case study to support and substantiate the knowledge.Findings:The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated to the world that supply chain is the true lifeline of any business operation. The manufacturers had been hitherto concentrating on long-term planning to decide their future course of action and the organizational strategy. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the futility and vulnerability of long-term planning and the need for short-term ad-hoc decision-making ability.Recommendation & Conclusion:It is necessary to optimize supply chain and operations to build in resilience and flexibility to ensure faster response to unforeseen disruptions. Short term responsiveness is gaining popularity and building resilience must overtake forecasting to ensure shocks such as Covid do not throw businesses completely out of gear.

  • Small Batch Manufacturing in the Age of Disruption to Reduce Slow Moving,
Obsolete and Deteriorating Finished Goods in Fast Moving Consumer Goods
           Industry

    • Authors: Anthony Vaz, Anwar Tedjamulja, Rajendran Narayanasamy
      Pages: 21 - 26
Abstract: The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry is characterised by many stock keeping units being held in hypermarkets, supermarkets, minimarkets, convenience stores, smaller sundry shops as well as in centralised or decentralised warehouses supplied from batch manufacturing. In the process of manufacturing and distributing a large range of items, a portion of slow-moving items result in obsolete stocks being held. These slow-moving items often sit on shelves for long periods of time and upon reaching their expiry dates, some deteriorate too. In these circumstances, the supply chain manager may decide to dispose or write them off at a loss. This study aims to show how analysis of such inventory and their demand popularity could be used to install small batch capacity, applying a make to order policy in the FMCG industry for non-popular items. Supply chain managers may also transfer finished goods and moving single units of finished goods from an opened carton between retail outlets and warehouses before applying a make when zero policy to reduce and eliminate such waste in supply chains.

           Periods in Malaysia

    • Authors: Sitraselvi Chandren, Mohd Amir Mat Samsudin, Sumaia Ayesh Qaderi, Santhirasegaran Nadarajan
      Pages: 48 - 59
Abstract: The paper investigates the CEO role in achieving a desirable operating performance during GST and SST periods. This paper used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression to determine the CEO role in in operating performance during the combined GST and SST periods and individual GST  period including SST period for 249 listed firms mainly from manufacturing and service sectors. It is empirically evidence with the support of upper echelon theory assumption that CEO age and CEO education have negative association with operating performance (profitability and liquidity) during the GST and SST periods. The younger CEO has significant role in achieving positive operating performance. The accounting or finance CEO education not in every situation plays critical role in attaining sound operating performance. The CEO ownership has negative influence to profitability and positive influence to liquidity position of the firm. Based on the outcome, CEO ownership should reduce any agency issues by achieving a desirable operating performance (profitability and liquidity).  The relationship between CEO type and operating performance are positive for profitably and negative for liquidity. Generally, the CEO whether within the family or outsider require to boost the profitability and liquidity position of firms as these components of operating performance are importance for firm survival and growth even during GST and SST periods. In sum, the outcome reports that CEO role is significant in line with upper echelon theory for effective decision making, managing and making good choices in business operations for achieving a better operating performance during the GST and SST periods
