  • Characterization of Best Practices for Customer/Supplier Collaboration in
           Co-innovation Projects

    • Abstract: Abstract High market competitiveness and a lack of internal resources and knowledge make companies increasingly interested in open innovation, being the collaborative innovation projects with suppliers one of the most widely used initiatives. However, the collaborative process is difficult to manage given the diversity of factors to consider when mixing different organizational cultures, resources, competencies, and experiences. One way to support the process is through the management of related good practices. Therefore, based on a review of the literature and international standards on open innovation or collaboration, this document identifies five dimensions and 18 practices of the customer-supplier collaborative innovation process. The identification of these good practices allows the characterization of the customer/supplier collaboration process in innovation projects and allows the establishment of a reference framework for the creation of an evaluation model.

  • The Impact of Absorptive Capacity on Innovation in Peru

    • Abstract: Abstract This research aims to determine absorptive capacity’s impact on innovation in SMEs in Peru. SMEs in Latin America tend to be characterized by technological backwardness, and innovations, if any, tend to be incremental in nature. In Peru, more than half of innovation activities are destined to the acquisition of capital goods. In this sense, rather than generate innovation, SMEs tend to adopt existing innovations. Thus, in order to reap the benefits of innovation adoption, SMEs must possess a high degree of absorptive capacity, understood as the firm’s capacity to value external knowledge, assimilate, and exploit it towards commercial ends. In this respect, Innovate Peru, an innovation agency, grants subsidies to SMEs for facilitating innovation adoption. In collaboration between the public and academic sector, data was recollected from 88 SMEs that were granted this innovation subsidy. This paper contributes to the literature on absorptive capacity and innovation within Latin America, which has been vaguely studied. Likewise, it holds practical implications for top managers from SMEs who are looking to innovative, and policy implications for innovation policy makers, as it validates the effect of an innovation policy instrument.

  • The Fuzzy Boundaries in Start-up Firms Industries. A Social Network
           Analysis

    • Abstract: Abstract This paper aims to explore and describe the way in which startup firms are grouped into industries. To this end, a quantitative research approach is presented, applying a social network analysis to a sample of Pacific Alliance startups, which were recorded in CrunchBase, considering their operational activities as linkage criteria. In this way, this document offers a new application to social network analysis to demonstrate the need for a different way of classifying startups that goes beyond the industry boundaries established by the traditional classification systems. It also shows that Pacific Alliance startup industries are structured according to a pattern of dominant activity, applied technology and specific use. In addition, there is a concentration on mature or declining startup industries, while growing industries are left in second order.

  • Information and Communication Technologies and Their Impact on
           Competitiveness in Latin America

    • Abstract: Abstract One of the biggest challenges facing countries today is how to make their economies and industries competitive in the face of significant international rivalry and a globalized environment. Countries are making considerable efforts to boost the factors that make them more competitive, not least of these being the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), a determining factor in global industrial trends. Unfortunately however some countries have lagged behind in terms of ICT implementation, with the Latin American region being a specific example. This article seeks to identify whether there are significant differences between Latin American countries and their main trading partners with respect to ICT adoption, and also with respect to the Global Competitiveness Index (2019) produced by the World Economic Forum. The findings refer to the fact that there is a significant difference in how clusters of various Latin American countries are underpinning competitiveness through ICTs when compared to their main partners.

  • The New Strategy to The Legitimation of Informal Firms. The Effects of The

    • Abstract: Abstract Competition between formal and informal companies has been increasingly studied. However, there is a lack of studies in the collaboration between formal and informal companies generated using crowdfunding platforms. Based on the signaling theory and using the loans from 2019 of the Kiva crowdfunding platform. The drivers and enablers of the collaboration between formally registered firms (partners micro finances) and informal firms (unregistered firms - borrowers) in the context of the crowdfunding digital platform are studied. The results state a negative relationship between the lender's propensity to make loans and the informal firm's percentage borrowed. However, if the borrower receives a trustworthy partner (micro-finance), the borrower's negative impact decreases. Moreover, the lender's propensity to make loans lesser in projects of the tertiary sector. The study contributes to the entrepreneurship theory to understand the mechanism to legitimization the informal firm through collaboration with formal firms in the digital platforms.

  • An Exploration of Some Effects of Social Innovation Capability in Social
           Enterprises in Mexico

    • Abstract: Abstract Social enterprises need to develop processes that create social value based on their initiative to find solutions to social problems through innovative strategies. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of social innovation capability, social marketing achievements and enterprise social performance as antecedents of social value creation in social enterprises in Mexico. An explanatory and cross-sectional study was developed for 106 managers of social enterprises in Mexico. Structural Equation Modelling was applied using Partial Least Squares to test five hypotheses. The results supported that social innovation capability has a positive and direct effect on social value creation, social marketing achievements and enterprise social performance. Similarly, these last two showed a direct effect on social value creation. Particularly, it was identified that social innovation capability had the greatest effect on social value creation. The implications of the results are discussed.

  • Industrial Policy and the Development of the Electric Vehicles Industry:
           The Case of Korea

    • Abstract: Abstract The Korean government has stimulated R&D activities of the electric vehicle (EV) industry and promoted commercialization of EVs. Korea’s EV industry developed rapidly. The industrial policy to promote the EV industry provides implications to the automobile producers. First, producers not developing EV technologies may lag behind in the market. Second, it is important to improve the efficiency of their R&D expenditures. Third, it may be effective for the less advanced EV producers to cooperate with foreign producers. Fourth, the EV producers are needed to cooperate with the rechargeable battery producers. Fifth, success of the EV industry will depend on the probability of reducing the production cost. Sixth, the government should prepare R&D support measures targeting promotion of SMEs in the EV industry. Seventh, the government wishing to promote the EV industry needs to define the responsibility of each Ministry and establish a system resolving conflicts between the Ministries efficiently.

  • Scientific and Technological Links from Samsung On Lithium Batteries and
           Graphene

    • Abstract: Abstract Lithium and graphene are two substantial raw materials for the manufacture of lithium secondary batteries that can be recharged quickly, whenever a user needs it for the operation of computers, electric vehicles and cell phones, among other products. In this regard, Samsung appears as the world’s leading corporation, by observing the technology generation of this type of batteries and the molecule indicated previously, considering its environment and management. For this reason, the study aims to analyze and compare the effects of technological regimes on the technology generation of the leading companies of the Samsung group, as well as their networks, considering patent applications and the types of institutions related, even if there is collaboration between these companies. Our findings show that Samsung’s selected companies, related to lithium rechargeable batteries and graphene, are strongly linked to their technological regimes.

  • Breakthrough and Disruptive Innovation: A Theoretical Reflection

    • Abstract: Abstract The aim of this paper is a theoretical reflection which attempt is to define the breakthrough and disruptive innovation phenomena. For many years, scholars have studied the different forms of innovation and have provided new definitions and proposed different approaches to this topic. An issue discussed in this work is the differences between disruptive and breakthrough innovations, which can be perceived as similar but are producing different effects in the industry and market structure, and as well in the product structure and the technological approach to develop an innovation. This paper aims to develop a univocal meaning in the literature, differentiating the two phenomena, and provides a framework for the analysis of the different forms of technological change, studying its pervasive influence on our economy.
