  • Changing Consumer Preferences From Unorganized Retailing Towards Organized
           Retailing: A Study in Jammu

    • Authors: Urvashi -. Gupta et al.
Abstract: The retail industry in India is emerging as a one of the largest industries estimated to account for more than 10 per cent of the country’s GDP and around 8 per cent of the employment. This present study was conducted with a purpose of understanding the changes taking place in the minds of consumers towards modern retail formats and traditional retailers. It was observed that due to the changing demographics, increase in DINKS families, urbanization, and awareness due to electronic media especially internet the customers have multiple options to choose from modern retail outlets to neighborhood shops. Majority of the consumers are visiting organized formats for variety, easy availability, cleanliness with additional facility of entertainment for children and convenient parking facility and restaurant etc. In case of unorganized outlets immediacy of the store, credit and bargaining facility balance the tilt. Unlike higher age groups who prefer to visit Kirana stores, the younger generation has more inclination towards organized retail. Families with annual income less than 4.0 Lakh and having a single bread earner prefer shopping with nearby mom-n-pop stores. Both organized as well as unorganized retailers need to add value added services to make the shopping experience more comfortable and value oriented.

  • Civil Society Organizations and Policy Process in Tajikistan

    • Authors: Andrew I.E. Ewoh et al.
Abstract: This analysis examines the role of civil society organizations in the public policy process in Tajikistan. It begins with an examination of the emergence of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Tajikistan as a consequence of the government’s failure to address citizens’ needs, and its impact in resolving the socially significant problems in the post-conflict Tajikistan. This is followed by an exploration of the current political situation and the contextual policy environment in which CSOs must operate in order to exist. The article concludes that despite restrictions in their operations, CSOs not only advocate for new policies, they actively participate in the policy process by mobilizing and involving citizens in civic engagement.

  • Reducing Regional Disparities with Integrated Peripheral Zones: Northern
           Argentina and Zicosur

    • Authors: Carola B. Ramon Berjano Dr
Abstract: Globalisation has produced different outcomes regarding the convergence of disparities between countries and regions within integrated areas. Automatic convergence mechanisms postulated by classical economics have not always worked as predicted, as seen in the European Union (EU) experience. Further, regional policies within large integrated areas are difficult to manage given their complex planning and management. This article introduces the concept of Integrated Peripheral Zones (IPZ), defined as sub-regional integration schemes of neighbouring - and similar - economies belonging to different political units; and argues that the integration of the peripheries is crucial for successfully reducing disparities within larger areas, as some of these regions can even belong to their own countries ‘periphery‘. An example of these areas is ZICOSUR, comprising some of the least developed provinces belonging to the countries of MERCOSUR. This article argues that permanent and independent institutions are needed in order to formulate long term policies and focus on necessary infrastructure development.

  • The Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (LARR) Bill 2011:
           Providing Solutions or Raising Questions'

    • Authors: Amitendu Palit
Abstract: The Land Acquisition Act (LAA) of 1894 empowers the Indian state to exercise eminent domain for acquiring private land in ‘public purpose’. During the last few years, India has witnessed raging debates on whether the state is justified in acquiring land for use and development by industry. The Government has sought to address various concerns raised in this regard through the Land Acquisition, Resettlement & Rehabilitation (LARR) Bill of 2011, which seeks to replace the LAA. Several provisions in the Bill are influenced by the recommendations of the National Advisory Council (NAC). This paper examines the LARR Bill for identifying its improvements over the LAA in addressing rights and concerns of land owners. It also analyses the illustration of ‘public purpose’ and the role of the Government envisaged in acquiring land for industry in the LAA, the NAC’s recommendations and the LARR Bill. The paper argues that while the Bill improves over the LAA in a few aspects, it is a sub-optimal legislation from a rights-based approach as it does not strengthen individual rights to property for empowering individuals to challenge ‘public purpose’.

  • Developing Business Acumen in Chinese Business School Graduates

    • Authors: Rajaram Veliyath et al.
Abstract: This study assessed the importance of knowledge, skills, abilities (i.e., KSAs) and competencies for managerial success in China’s market economy. Business students at a major Chinese university were surveyed over a five year period, initially in 2001 and later in 2006, five years after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the explained variances in business acumen and social motivation skills were higher after China’s WTO entry. The results were reversed for communication skills. The results confirmed the predictive relevance of entrepreneurial behavior and adaptability in the model. Overall, the results suggest an enhanced appreciation for these KSAs after China’s WTO entry.

  • A Case Study: Impact of International Liberalization on the Indian Economy

    • Authors: Kishore G. Kulkarni et al.
Abstract: This paper, using the Solow growth model looks at the impact of liberalization on India’s economic growth. Additionally, using empirical data, it analyzes the patterns, processes, and characteristics of India’s economic growth. The Solow model explains the long run economic growth via the change in the Solow residuals. This paper defines the Solow residual as International trade. This paper will show that International trade and fewer regulations on exports and imports have ignited high economic growth in India. After the late 1980s, India saw an immense increase in international trade. Led by low tariff rates, India saw a hike in exports and imports and more importantly, foreign investments. With the backing of facts and figures, this paper will show that India has actually benefited in terms of economic growth from international trade. With liberalization, India has not only had success in the macro level, but it has also impacted people in terms of per capita income in the micro level. This paper is broken down into 4 sections. The first section gives an introduction to India and its relevance to the Solow model. The second section explores the theoretical framework of the Solow model. The third section uses the empirical data to examine the impact of liberalization on India (pre and post reformation). Finally, the fourth section is the analysis and conclusion section which compares India to other South Asian counties and gives policy recommendation.

  • FDI in Vietnam: An Empirical Study of an Economy in Transition

    • Authors: Christian Delaunay et al.
Abstract: Vietnam has emerged as an alternative smaller emerging economy market for FDI in the last five years, attracting both domestic market seeking and export oriented FDI. Vietnam continues to attract significant East Asian and OECD investors. This paper analyses the economic determinants of FDI for a smaller Non-BRIC emerging country, undergoing a rapid transition to a market driven economy in a region of great competitiveness among host countries and growing attractiveness to major source countries. The regression models presented in this paper show that while macro-economic variables such as GDP and to a lesser extent labor costs were predictably significant as determinants of FDI in Vietnam, (as they are in developed economies), the loss of value of the Dong, both against the dollar and against SDR, was a significant and negative factor in the regression models. It appears the relationship of the value of the host currency to FDI in newly emerging countries may be different from that of the more developed countries. Tax rates, openness to trade and growth rate were not shown to be significant in this empirical analysis. Perhaps the traditional literature on FDI needs to be re-examined for the unique challenges facing the newly emerging economies such as CIVETS countries.

  • Have China & India achieved their potential in attracting Foreign
           Direct Investment'

    • Authors: Kaliappa Kalirajan et al.
Abstract: Since the last two decades, China and India have attracted the attention of multinational enterprises around the world. Apart from accounting for almost a third of the world population, both economies’ share in the world economy has grown substantially. Taken together they are expected to contribute around 1.8 percent of the 4.5 percent global growth expected in 2011. Currently, China hails as the second largest economy in the world replacing Japan (in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms), while India is the fourth largest economy, replacing Germany (IMF, 2011). Furthermore, based on the current economic growth trajectory (in PPP terms), China is expected to be the world largest economy by 2016 and India to be world third largest economy by 2020. However, some of these reports also argue that China’s potential FDI has showing a declining trend lately and India’s domestic policies have been the major ‘behind the border’ constraints to attract FDI consistently. It is in this context, this paper using a panel data from 2000 to 2009 over top 20 export destinations for China and India examined the question of whether China and India are able to achieve their potential FDI and whether this potential has been declining or increasing over time.

  • Dilemmas of Diversification: Regional Economic Development and
Business-Industrial Clusters in China and Kazakhstan

    • Authors: Hilda C. Eitzen
Abstract: Both China and Kazakhstan have established sovereign wealth funds and financial state holding companies, where diversified asset management can move beyond Western financial markets to take multiple stakes in other emerging market businesses, including international private equity, commodities, and real estate. Faced with uncertain returns in the West, China and Kazakhstan are increasingly poised to evolve separate yet mutually cooperative investment projects to further diversify their own state portfolios away from Western capital markets. For instance, China’s financial conglomerate CITIC (China International Trust and Investment Corporation) acquired shares of Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna. As similar projects emerge in the future, the spillover of knowledge and information will accompany asset-sharing.

  • Editor’s in Chief Note

    • Authors: Govind Hariharan
Abstract: It is with great pleasure that we bring you this fourth volume of the ICA Institute’s Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Economies (JEKEM). JEKEM within a short time frame is evolving into a journal that brings to attention topical research in a wide range of critical issues on emerging economies. As the western economies jump from cliff to cliff, emerging economies have also become mired in an eddy. Thought leadership such as those provided in this issue of JEKEM can provide a guiding light as we swim to shore. In that vein, this issue of JEKEM has contributions from authors from around the world on topics ranging from comparative studies of Foreign Direct Investment Flows in India and China, Reducing Regional Disparities in Argentina and Zicosur, and Industrial Clusters in China and Kazakstan to Business Acument of Chinese B-School graduates, and from Land Acqusition legislation in India to the shift from unorganized to organized retail in Jammu. These are topics that are at the forefront of current discussions among policy makers, industry and academia and we hope that you will find it as enlightening as we do.
