  • An Insight to the World of Female Entrepreneurship: Systematic Literature
Review of the Phenomenon using the Mckinsey 7S Model

    • Abstract: The paper's main aim is to contribute to the empirical knowledge of women's entrepreneurship by utilizing the McKinsey 7S Model to explain the managerial phenomenon in women-led companies. The paper is based on secondary data sources. The data were collected from case studies presented in academic journals indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The data collection used the PRISMA 2009 method. The case studies of women-led companies were assessed in the McKinsey 7S model on a qualitative basis. The paper introduces women companies' managerial traits and procedures, which the McKinsey 7S model can recognize. In the chosen and analyzed sample of case studies dealing with female entrepreneurship, not even one directly used the McKinsey model for analysis. Results also showed that the 7S model should be used with primary data rather than to evaluate incomplete secondary data. Also, factors that lead women to start a business worldwide have been shown.

  • The Principle of Characterization as a Systemic Paradigm of Safety:
           Experiments and Applications

    • Abstract: This work is devoted to promoting the principle of characterization, treated as a systemic paradigm binding in an integral whole the functional and structural aspects of any organization, under-stood as a deliberate relationship of related resources. The principle of characterization and the specific characterization theories built on its basis belong to the methodology of systemic research. Its essence is the axioms contained in model Ψa of the proper functioning, which are assigned to the relationships contained in model Ψb of the structure of this organization. The functional-structural paradigm considered is characteristic primarily of project activity in which an efficient structural response to a certain problem of the correct (safe) functioning of the organization as a whole or its considered part is sought after.

  • Demographic, Individual, Job Diversities and Knowledge Sharing: A Study of
           Enterprising Family Businesses

    • Abstract: Employees’ knowledge sharing intention in a firm is recognized as a key positive factor of business sustainability and longevity. Yet, the diverse nature of firms has made a difficulty to make general conclusions about employees’ knowledge sharing intentions, which is dependent on individual characteristics. Therefore, focusing on family businesses in Sri Lanka, this study investigates the influ-ence of employees’ demographics, individuality and job diversity on knowledge sharing intentions. 132 employees who serve in enterprising family businesses in Sri Lanka were randomly selected for the survey and each was given a questionnaire. The influence of employee demographics, individuality and job diversity regarding knowledge sharing was then analyzed using a multiple regression model. Out of eight factors, only employee’s age, level of education and job orientation have significantly in-fluenced the knowledge sharing intentions of employees in family businesses. These findings highlight the importance of the level of employee’s age, education and job orientation on individual knowledge sharing behavior in family businesses.

           Engagement

    • Abstract: The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of Human Resources Man-agement (HRM) practices (employee communications, employee development and rewards and recog-nitions) on employee engagement. Employee engagement has emerged as one of the most important topics in the sphere of human resource management. The aim of this paper is to examine and gain bet-ter understanding of the drivers that influence employee engagement in a printing company. Employee communication, employee development, rewards, and recognitions were selected as independent varia-bles. Sample for the study consists of 151 staff from manufacturing. Data were collected with the help of a questionnaire and analyzed using the Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 23. Throughout the statistical analysis, it is found that there is a significant relationship between the two independent variables with the dependent variable. In conclusion, it is observed that HRM practices have an influence on the employee work engagement. This shows that employers need to develop proper and well-structured HRM policies in attaining high work engagement level among the employ-ees.

  • Security in Topological, Functional and Semiotic Terms

    • Abstract: The article is devoted to the modeling of object structures in sequences of event processes characteristic of critical infrastructure (CI) objects arising in emergency situations. The identification of risky sequences of events is a key issue carried out in topological, functional and semiotic terms. The topological approach includes flat, hierarchical and hypergraph - it is possible by means of transformations of equivalent models of the event network through its simplification to the form of a hypothesis or towards the desired functionality. The functionality approach covers theorizing and plural problems in the processes of the creation of a priori and aposteriorical errors of multiplication and synthesis on the basis of also incorrect graphical models of functioning. The semiotic approach captures combinatorically related functional and structural errors, which are impossible to identify and remove by means of arithmetic-logical tests. Currently, this is possible only on the basis of the paradigm of the characterization theory, which guarantees a semantic relationship between the correctness of the functioning and the structure of the analyzed versus the synthesized object of research.

  • Working Capital Management and Corporate Profitability: Empirical Evidence
           from Vietnam

    • Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between working capital management and corporate profitability of Vietnamese listed firms. We propose a different interpretation of the empirical evidence that takes into account the dependency of collection and payment decisions. This helps establish the causal relationship between working capital management and firm profitability, which made the interpretation of the empirical results more meaningful and consistent with the real practice of firms. The analysis results based on a sample of 374 Vietnamese listed firms in the period from 2008 to 2014 show that working capital management positively affects the performance of Vietnamese listed companies. However, the results also indicate that Vietnamese firms do not intentionally use trade credit policy to enhance firms’ performance and the observed relationship between trade credit and profitability, though significant, is just by coincidence.

  • Does Performance-Based Budgeting Have a Correlation with Performance
Measurement System' Evidence from Local Government in Indonesia

    • Abstract: This study aimed to empirically test some variables related to Performance-Based Budgeting (PBB) and Performance Measurement System (PMS) implementation in the local government, namely Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study applied the mixed-methods approach with sequential explanatory strategy (QUANTITATIVE to Qualitative). Quantitative stage was conducted by testing the hypothesis using the Structural Equation Model (SEM) approach. On the qualitative stage, the interview was conducted to dig more information on the unsupported hypothesis. From the result of the hypothesis testing, it was discovered that the limitation of information system had a negative influence, while education had a positive influence towards the effectiveness of PBB. Furthermore, the effectiveness of PBB had a positive influence towards budget absorption, and the accountability also had a positive influence towards the use of performance information to practice the arrangement of PPB. Meanwhile, the qualitative analysis produced the finding that there were practices of PBB that could still be done manually and it was not supported by information technology. Besides, the implementation of PMS and PBB was more because of the coercive pressure rather than consciousness of normative apparatus.

  • Reasons of Using IT Outsourcing (ITO) — Polish-Spanish
           Cross-Cultural Analysis

    • Abstract: The article compares the reasons for using IT outsourcing (ITO) in Polish and Spanish enterprises, based on the authors’ own research. The reasons for the application of ITO have been classified into three groups: economic, technological, and organizational/strategic. On the basis of the classified reasons, a research hypothesis was formulated: Representatives of Polish enterprises assess other groups of reasons as the most important motivation for the use of ITO in their companies compared to Spanish enterprises. On the basis of the authors’ own research, the hypothesis has been confirmed. Polish enterprises assess technological reasons as the most important, whereas Spanish enterprises consider organizational/strategic reasons to be the most important, although the differences in the assessment are not large. The difference in the validity of the reasons for the use of ITO may arise from the maturity of the ITO market in both countries but may also result from the personal experience of the companies with ITO.

  • Rethinking Performance Management Practices in Local Administrations'
An Evaluation of BV, CPA, And WPI Practices in the United Kingdom

    • Abstract: Performance is a fundamental tool that improves results oriented on public administration. Performance management applications have become very popular in public institutions over the past 20 years. Direct accountability to the political institutions and the public is ensured by defining the performance of public administrations according to their organizational goals and objectives. Local governments are using performance management practices to assess the quality of public services offered. In the United Kingdom, performance management practices at the local level were promoted under the leadership of the central government. However, there cannot be a certain standardization or stability in performance management applications. The Best Value (BV) regime was applied primarily in England and Wales. The system was later applied in Scotland in 2003. In 2002, Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) Programme was introduced. Wales preferred to stay outside of this program. The Wales Programme for Improvement (WPI) has adopted self-assessment and holistic assessment. After 2009, the cost-effectiveness of local services was evaluated through comprehensive area assessments. This practice was abolished after 2010, adopting a governance approach based on the common negotiations of local actors. This study aims to evaluate the performance measurement systems applied in the local area in the United Kingdom.

    • Abstract: Unemployment is a serious challenge that has been rising day by day. Skill development and creation of employment opportunities are key factors to address youth unemployment. This study emphasizes on the need for job-oriented education and to link education to employment. This study derives a mathematical model and tests the same using live university hiring data and attempts to integrate the three stakeholders, employers, education providers, and the young, each of whom have a unique approach, expectation, and understanding of the paradigm. Novel methodology inclusive of empirical evidence-based integration of objective fulfillment drafted into institutional pedagogy can help increase the success rate of education to employment from an Indian context especially Indian girls and women. The study outlines specific aspects of analytical intervention in this regard and focus-es on systematic training programs exclusively for vocational and skills amelioration executed to ad-dress this multidimensional challenge by adopting easily implementable software methodologies that are more easily implementable over a wide area network or an Internet-based application engine powered by information communication technology.

  • Health Care Spending Structures in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia
Over the Years as Compared to Other EU Countries

    • Abstract: After joining the European Union in 2004, the post-communist countries have dramatically changed their structure of expenditure for medical services. The cause of this is legislative and ownership changes in the new economy. The study analyzed the expenditure on medical services in the European Union with a special focus on Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The European Union countries were divided into clusters using different methods, that is, Ward’s, Two Step and Centroid Clustering. In the paper, the structure and changes in health expenses were presented according to the types of expenditures over the years 2004-2015. Countries were assigned to clusters based on three variables: medical products, appliances and equipment, outpatient services and hospital services. Variables were considered as a percentage of household budget. In Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, there is a clear increase in the outpatient services spending compared to the hospital services expenditure.

  • Employee’s Learning in the Organization - A Study of Knowledge Based
           Industries

    • Abstract: This paper focuses on reviewing the learning behavior of individual employees in the firm over other influencing factors in knowledge-based industries in Sri Lanka. Using a stratified random sampling technique, a sample of 143 employees from jobs in Database Administration & Development, Systems & Network Administration, Web Development & Programming and Software Engineering was selected as respondents for the survey from 13 knowledge based industrial firms in Sri Lanka. After a descriptive analysis of the characteristics of respondents, the causal relationships among predictor and outcome variables were tested using the partial least squares regression method. The results indicated that the use of digital methods, digital tools, organizational identification and knowledge sharing are positively influenced by employee’s learning in the firm. Yet, the employee’s turnover intention has negatively influenced employee learning.

  • Strategy, Corporate Culture, Structure and Operational Processes as the
Context for the Innovativeness of an Organization

    • Abstract: The paper refers to relationships between the innovativeness of an organization and its selected determinants such as strategy, corporate culture, structure and operational processes. Research was conducted among 200 managers at the top, middle and operational levels of management (200 companies operating in Poland implementing innovations - innovative companies). Conditions leading to innovations are described as the combination of processes, which result from the internal and external dynamics of a given entity. The analysis assumed that the assessment of company innovativeness would be based on an assessment of whether the company is a leader in the industry in terms of new products (the higher the rating, the more innovative the company is considered to be). The relationship between the dimensions of the company's functioning and the degree of its innovativeness was rated on the basis of two measures: the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and the chi-square coefficient. It was assumed that the most innovative companies have structures similar to organic ones, with a weak influence of the elements of mechanistic structures. This assumption was proven in relation to features of organizations considered important for innovativeness.

  • Interdisciplinarity in Tech Startups Development – Case Study of
           ‘Unistartapp’ Project

    • Abstract: Empirical data as well as scientific reports confirm that startups require diverse, in-house competencies in order to achieve market success. However, while technology-related competencies are usually brought to new tech ventures by their founders, there is a significant deficiency of market- and management-related competencies, which is reflected in the statistics of common startup failure reasons. In this context, a question arises: how interdisciplinarity of knowledge and competencies can be built into the very core of tech startups' The text addresses this question by zeroing in on the role of universities in this process. In the first part, the specificity of tech startups is analyzed. The next chapter overviews the hitherto academy-related startup education environment together with its shortcomings as far as interdisciplinarity is concerned. Finally, the case study of innovative and interdisciplinary academic ecosystem, which was built and tested within the project UniStartApp, is presented and discussed together with related lessons learned. The text is concluded with final remarks on challenges involved in embedding interdisciplinarity into startup education ecosystem.
