  • Risk Culture and Strategic Planning Roles on Enterprise Risk Management
           and Firm Performance in Selected African Countries

      Abstract: Enterprise risk management (ERM) research has mostly been limited to factors determining its implementation and its effects on firm performance. Despite a clear need for its establishment in sound risk culture and its integration with strategic planning, organisational leaders continue to implement these management concepts in isolation. Academic research into these conjoint relationships has also received less attention in the literature. This study investigates whether ERM's effect on firm financial performance, measured by return on assets, is mediated by risk culture and strategic planning. The study provides empirical evidence that adopting ERM solely does not enhance a firm's financial performance. The ERM, risk culture, and strategic planning constructs are empirically determined to be correlated. Strategic planning has a direct and positive relationship with firm performance. The study further provides empirical evidence that the positive effects of ERM implementation on firm financial performance are mediated by risk culture and strategic planning. The size of a firm and its financial leverage are remarkable determinants of firm performance, while firm age and growth rate are not. The pieces of evidence have been presented from an under-investigated context in Africa with other contributions to the literature, such as, providing comprehensive measures of ERM and risk culture and responding to calls to synthesise risk and strategic management. This study also advances multiple mediation analysis and the use of PLS-SEM in the ERM literature.

  • The Relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
           Self-efficacy and Technopreneurial Intention

      Abstract: As a developing country, Malaysia needs to develop a greater number of technology-savvy entrepreneurs to encounter the challenges of COVID19 and fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0). However, the number of young technology-based entrepreneurs in Malaysia is still low. Moreover, not many studies have been done to identify the motivating factors of technology-based entrepreneurship. As such, this study was carried out to identify the influence of information and communication technology (ICT) self-efficacy on technopreneurial intention. A total of 152 students from a Malaysian public university was surveyed through self-administered questionnaire. Multiple regressions analysis was performed to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that three variables, namely Internet general ability, confidence in using computer and competency in using computer significantly influenced technopreneurial intention. Meanwhile, communicative ability did not have any significant relationship with technopreneurial intention. Generally, the findings supported previous studies that ICT self-efficacy played a role in determining an individual’s technopreneurial intention. Specifically, proficiency in computer skills and mastery of Internet general ability should be stressed. As technology-based entrepreneurship continues to play a crucial role in post-COVID19 era, it is important to develop more young and competitive technopreneurs. Thus, this study suggested that government should accentuate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education; while education providers should continue to offer ICT courses to the students in order to bolster the development of technopreneurship in the country.

Among them, Generation Y has become the largest segment that recently enters into the workforce, which requires organizations to acknowledge and understand their expectations in order to survive and compete. Therefore, this brief theoretical paper investigates the workplace characteristics of Generation Y for providing organizations with a better understanding. After reviewing cohort-specific characteristics of Generation Y, this paper concludes with managerial implications of working, managing, and retaining employees from Generation Y.

  • Mediating Effect of Sustainable Manufacturing Practices between Green
           Innovation Capability and Sustainability Performance among Malaysian
           Manufacturing SMEs

      Abstract: The level of innovative activities in Malaysia is still low compared to that of other nations, which is attributed to the scarcity of green innovation capability (GIC) and the minimal acquisition of new technological knowledge. Studies revealed that Malaysian manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) encounter the challenges of operation and supply chain disruption and tight cash flows. These firms would not want to venture into green equipment and eco technologies if there is no certainty of promising returns. Overall, studies on sustainable management systems in the Malaysian manufacturing SMEs have revealed that firms are still in the early stages of implementation, such that sustainable manufacturing practices (SMPs) are predominantly production- and process-oriented, neglecting the importance of the product life cycle and sustainable end-of-life management. The aim of this paper is: (1) To examine the effect of GIC on firm sustainability performance (SP) and (2) To investigate the mediating effect of SMPs on relationship between GIC and firm SP. Smart PLS 3.0 was applied to analyze the data collected among 150 ISO 14001 certified local SMEs manufacturers. The study demonstrated the non-significant result between GIC and SP; while SMPs mediated the relationship between GIC and SP. This study enriches the Dynamic Capability View (DCV) by extending the sustainability model to better explain the sustainable development process in the context of Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. This article does not just inform firms on the importance of SMPs for performance but also guides firm managers towards understanding and improving their current SMPs. These results also help Malaysian policy makers in providing appropriate assistance to improve current firm operations, and subsequently, sustainability-related outcomes. Following this, various kinds of assistance (e.g., strategic planning, governance, facility, financing, and technology) can be provided to support SMEs manufacturers.

  • Reparation for Service Failure Through Service Recovery: An Assessment of
           Consumer Behaviour in an Online Shopping Context

      Abstract: A service failure in online shopping exacerbates customers’ behaviour towards a brand/webstore. However, service recovery is deemed an instrumental factor to atone for the customer loss after a service failure. To examine this, the current study aims to analyse the relationship between service failure and its downstream effect on the future customer behavioural intentions (i.e., customers’ switching and repurchase. Moreover, this study incorporates the mediating role of service recovery between service failure and customers’ future intentions. The survey technique was employed to achieve objectives by collecting data from 364 Malaysian customers who purchased from any webstore in the last six months. Data was analysed through SPSS 24.0 and SEM-PLS 3.3.3. The results of the study revealed that service recovery has a positive impact on repurchase intention and switching intention. Furthermore, it is observed that due to cultural influences, the effect of service recovery on repurchase intention is less significant as compared to switching intention, which shows that in a specific culture, service recovery is less important than social loss. The practical implications of the study are two-fold. Firstly, the service provider should consider customers' expectations regarding service recovery. Secondly, service providers should not be limited to financial compensation only; instead, they should include non-financial compensation to retain customers from a specific culture.

      Abstract: The global and fast-paced economy requires all types of businesses to cultivate their communication system for the efficient and smooth running of the organization. Various international crises can cause a shift towards a cheaper mode and methods of communication that can harm the overall business strategy and success. This study deals with the influence of strategic marketing approaches that can positively influence the communication quality and methods of a business. Particular emphasis has been put on business-to-customer communication targets along with new possibilities of developing more robust marketing communication tools. The paper aims to propose new approaches and trends in the current business-to-customer communication model that would help in mitigating both current and future challenges. Thereby, the paper incorporates pragmatism as research philosophy, deductive as the research approach, and descriptive as the research design. Apart from that, a secondary method of data collection along with ethical modes of data collection is taken into consideration to present a comprehensive and efficacious paper.

      Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of recognition and career advancement on employee job performance in Nigeria Brewery Plc in Imagbon, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population consists of 215 staff of Nigerian Brewery Plc. Imagbon, and sample size was 88. A Structured questionnaire was used as a research instrument in gathering the primary data used for the study. The data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation and correlation analysis with the help of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 23). The results and findings indicated that employee recognition (r-0.759, p- 0.029) and career advancement (r-0.594, p- 0.012) have significant and positive effects on employee job performance in Nigerian Brewery Plc Imagbon, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. The research recommends that the management of Nigerian brewery Plc. should put a measure in place to ensure retention of younger employee that constitute the greater percentage of the brewery industry through adequate employee recognition programmes; and that management should be fully committed to employee flexible work schedule and provide an enabling environment for all and sundry within the organization.

  • Influence of Organizational Culture, Sustainable Competitive Advantages,
           and Employees’ Commitment on Strategic Human Resources Management in the
           Banking Sector of Saudi Arabia

      Abstract: The rising trend of “strategic human resource management practices” is significantly leading the way to enhance the performance and competitive advantages of the banking sector. Thus, the banking sector in developing countries still using traditional HRM practices to sustain the competitive advantages and to achieve the business goals. The current study investigates the influence of organizational culture, employees’ commitment, and sustainable competitive advantages on the strategic human resource management practices in the banking sector of Saudi Arabia. We applied a resource-based view to achieve the research objectives. “Structural equation modelling-partial least square” (SEM-PLS) technique were applied to investigate the relationship among constructs under study. A cross-sectional method was applied to collect data from 181 employees working in different banks in Saudi Arabia. We found organizational culture significantly influence employees’ commitment and sustainable competitive advantages. Hence, employees’ commitment does not influence strategic human resource management practices; merely, sustaining competitive advantages significantly influence strategic human resource management practices. Additionally, employees’ commitment not mediates the relationship between organizational culture and strategic human resource practices. Thereby, sustainable competitive advantages mediate the relationship between organizational culture and strategic human resource management practices. Finally, the present study will help the banking sector to unearth the best implication of strategic human resource management practices as they can sustain the competitive advantages and achieve the business goals.

  • Debt to GDP Ratio from the Perspective of MMT

      Abstract: In this note we examine the debt to GDP ratio from the perspective of MMT (Modern Monetary Theory) by a simple macroeconomic model with savings by government bonds instead of money. Mainly we will show the following results. 1) In order to maintain full employment under economic growth, the budget deficit, including interest payments on government bonds, must be positive; and if the budget deficit is smaller than this value, there will be recession with involuntary unemployment. 2) Under full employment the debt to GDP ratio approaches to a finite value over time. 3) In the underemployment case the national income is determined by the budget deficit. 4) The excessive budget deficit causes inflation. 6) In order to recover full employment from recession we need budget deficit larger than that when full employment is maintained. 5) The budget deficit, including interest payments on government bonds, equals the increase of the savings of consumers between periods (generations); and this result holds whether we have full employment or not, whether we have inflation or not. Then, the ratio of the national debt to GDP in a period is smaller than one, and even if one period constitutes of several years, the debt to GDP ratio in a year is finite.
