Abstract: We propose a sequential monitoring scheme to find structural breaks in dynamic linear models. The monitoring scheme is based on a detector and a suitably chosen boundary function. If the detector crosses the boundary function, a structural break is detected. We provide the asymptotics for the procedure under the null hypothesis of stability. The consistency of the procedure is also proved. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the stopping time under the change point alternative. Monte Carlo simulation is used to show the size and the power of our method under several conditions. As an example, we study the real estate markets in Boston and Los Angeles, and at the national U.S. level. We find structural breaks in the markets, and we segment the data into stationary segments. It is observed that the autoregressive parameter is increasing but stays below 1.

Abstract: This paper shows that if the errors in a multiple regression model are heavy-tailed, the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimators for the regression coefficients are tail-dependent. The tail dependence arises, because the OLS estimators are stochastic linear combinations of heavy-tailed random variables. Moreover, tail dependence also exists between the fitted sum of squares (FSS) and the residual sum of squares (RSS), because they are stochastic quadratic combinations of heavy-tailed random variables.

Abstract: This paper provides a systematic approach to semiparametric identification that is based on statistical information as a measure of its “quality.” Identification can be regular or irregular, depending on whether the Fisher information for the parameter is positive or zero, respectively. I first characterize these cases in models with densities linear in an infinite-dimensional parameter. I then introduce a novel “generalized Fisher information.” If positive, it implies (possibly irregular) identification when other conditions hold. If zero, it implies impossibility results on rates of estimation. Three examples illustrate the applicability of the general results. First, I consider the canonical example of average densities. Second, I show irregular identification of the median willingness to pay in contingent valuation studies. Finally, I study identification of the discount factor and average measures of risk aversion in a nonparametric Euler equation with nonparametric measurement error in consumption.

Abstract: This paper derives the limit distribution of the rescaled sum of the absolute value of an integrated process with continuously distributed innovations raised to a negative power less than
1, and of the analogous statistic that is obtained using the same function of an integrated process but only considering positive values of the integrated process. We show that the limit behavior of this statistic is determined by the values of the integrated process that are closest to 0, and find the limit behavior of the values of the integrated process that are closest to 0.

Abstract: In this paper, we give a two-line proof of a long-standing conjecture of Ben-Akiva in his 1973 PhD thesis regarding the random utility representation of the nested logit model, thus providing a renewed and straightforward textbook treatment of that model. As an application, we provide a closed-form formula for the correlation between two Fréchet random variables coupled by a Gumbel copula.

Abstract: The theory of optimal transportation has experienced a sharp increase in interest in many areas of economic research such as optimal matching theory and econometric identification. A particularly valuable tool, due to its convenient representation as the gradient of a convex function, has been the Brenier map: the matching obtained as the optimizer of the Monge–Kantorovich optimal transportation problem with the euclidean distance as the cost function. Despite its popularity, the statistical properties of the Brenier map have yet to be fully established, which impedes its practical use for estimation and inference. This article takes a first step in this direction by deriving a convergence rate for the simple plug-in estimator of the potential of the Brenier map via the semi-dual Monge–Kantorovich problem. Relying on classical results for the convergence of smoothed empirical processes, it is shown that this plug-in estimator converges in standard deviation to its population counterpart under the minimax rate of convergence of kernel density estimators if one of the probability measures satisfies the Poincaré inequality. Under a normalization of the potential, the result extends to convergence in the
norm, while the Poincaré inequality is automatically satisfied. The main mathematical contribution of this article is an analysis of the second variation of the semi-dual Monge–Kantorovich problem, which is of independent interest.
