  • Tourism Development and Economic Growth: An Empirical Investigation for

    • Authors: Dwi Rahmayani, Shanty Oktavilia, Deky Aji Suseno, Elvira Latifa Isnaini, Anton Supriyadi
      Pages: 1 - 11
Abstract: This paper applies the panel technique to investigate relationships between tourism development and economic growth in Indonesia (including 33 provinces) for the 2011-2021 period. The research method used the Solow growth model with Harrod Neutral approach and derived into the econometrics model by Fixed Effect Model (FEM) with the gross regional domestic product as a dependent variable and proxied of economic growth. Independent variables include gross fixed capital formation as proxied of capital, labor, and tourism indicator. The tourism indicator is measured the average length of total guests, domestic guests, and foreign guests in the classified hotel. Using FEM, the result showed that gross fixed capital formation, labor, and the average length of domestic guests significantly positively affect economic growth. The other, the foreign guest has no significant effect on economic growth. Additionally, tourism development has a more significant impact on economic growth from domestic guests than from foreign guests. Finally, the panel analysis shows a significant effect of the modeling, especially tourism indicator, to promote economic growth in 16 provinces in Indonesia. Thus, our empirical findings have significant policy implications for supporting tourism development in all provinces for growing economic highly.

  • Analysis of Communication Satellite Utilization Indonesian Banking

    • Authors: Firmansyah Firmansyah, Daffa Rizqi Prayudya
      Pages: 12 - 22
Abstract: Space technology keeps innovating and giving us the benefit to make our life easier, including satellite banking. However, BRI become the first bank that own satellite and claims it could improve efficiency. Therefore, this research aims to look at the efficiency of selected banks in Indonesia and its productivity growth on efficiency by the satellite ownership. We also want to examine if the ownership of the satellite could impact bank efficiency. Methods that will be used are divided into two steps, which are DEA and Tobit regression. The result of this research shows us that bank BRI achieves the highest efficiency and productivity growth, compared with other selected banks. The ownership of satellites also has a positive significant impact on bank efficiency. It could be implied that owning satellite for banks is beneficial, policymakers should increase budget spending and other banks could own satellite.

  • Economic Complexity and Sustainable Growth in Developing Countries

    • Authors: Lilis - Hoeriyah, Nunung Nuryartono, Syamsul Hidayat Pasaribu
      Pages: 23 - 33
Abstract: Most developing countries in this study are middle to low-income countries that have a relatively low economic complexity. This study aims to analyze the effect of the economic complexity on economic growth in 86 developing countries in 2010-2019. The method used is the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to capture dynamic panel analysis. The estimation results using the System GMM show that economic complexity has a positive effect on economic growth in developing countries. Increasing economic complexity encourages a structural transformation through high value-added economic sectors' creation to produce more complex products for earning a higher income. Human capital does not have a significant effect on economic growth because developing countries have relatively low-quality workers both in terms of education and health. The human capital development and government spending on the health sector are necessary to accelerate sustainable economic growth.

  • Impact of Agricultural Infrastructure Exposure on Inequality and Social

    • Authors: Andar Ristabet Hesda
      Pages: 34 - 48
Abstract: Infrastructure is expected as one of the engines of growth. However, there are also concerns about infrastructure externalities, such as inequality, social capital, and environmental issues. This study aims to clarify these unintended consequences of infrastructure, focusing on inequality and social capital. According to the instrumental variable approach, the estimation result shows that the district with high exposure to integrated agricultural infrastructure negatively associates with inequity and positively corresponds to social capital. One of the mechanisms behind it is increased farming productivity. This result implies that the complementarity aspect between infrastructure types should be considered in the infrastructure development plan and execution.

  • Determining Factors of Financial Performance Recovery in BRI During the
           Covid-19 Pandemic

    • Authors: Damiana Noor Firdauza, Yan Rahadian
      Pages: 49 - 60
Abstract: Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) succeeded in loan restructuring in the Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) segment. Loan restructuring has succeeded in pushing BRI to achieve the highest financial performance. This study aims to determine the success factors of BRI's loan restructuring. The research object is the Credit Restructuring and Recovery Division. This study applies a qualitative case study. Interviews and documentation were used to collect the data. The findings indicate that the critical success factor in dealing with the crisis is ability to adapt to policies change. The debtor's criteria and loan restructuring cycle are critical success factors of BRI's loan restructuring before the restructuring policy is set. The combination of three main components, namely interest rates, extending loan terms, and payment delays, are a determining factor for the success of loan restructuring. There are five components that support the success of loan restructuring, namely loan marketing, loan guarantee, personal values, information and communication, and other party cooperation.

  • Does Fiscal Decentralization Increase the Economic Growth in Sulawesi

    • Authors: Nur Azizah, Hendra Kusuma, Zainal Arifin
      Pages: 61 - 74
Abstract: Fiscal decentralization in Indonesia has been carried out since the issuance of Law No. 22/1999 which requires the central government to hand over financial management authority to local governments. Fiscal decentralization can create efficiency and effectiveness to encourage economic growth. However, there are still problems, namely whether the delegation of authority can contribute to regional economic growth. This study was conducted to determine the effect or impact of fiscal decentralization on the economic growth of six provinces on the island of Sulawesi. The central government assists the regions through fund transfer schemes such as GAF, SAF, and RSF. This study uses data from six provinces on Sulawesi Island between 2005-2019 and looks at the amount of fiscal decentralization used, namely the ability of regional transfers to create economic growth (AII) and the ability of local revenues to contribute to economic growth (AIII). The results of the analysis show that the indicator of the ability of transfer funds to the formation of regional original income has a positive and significant relationship. This means that, judging from the ability of the regions to contribute to economic growth, they are still unable to increase economic growth without the help of the central government.

  • Impact of Earthquake on Human Capital Formation

    • Authors: Rizki Hadiman, Sartika Djamaluddin
      Pages: 75 - 95
Abstract: The study of the impact of natural disasters on human capital is still very developed. This study aims to analyze the long-term impact of natural disasters experienced at a child's early age on human capital formation, with a cognitive score as a proxy. Using the Difference-in-Difference method and IFLS data with the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake observations, this study results imply that natural disasters give their losses to human capital formation. Children who at an early age (around 0-2 years) experienced the disaster had 1,62 points lower cognitive score. The impact on cognitive scores was also more profound for the child's age at the time of the disaster, especially at the age of 1 year and under, compared to the child's position at the age of 4 or 5 years.

  • Direct Payment System in Sugarcane Industry: Beneficial or Unfavourable

    • Authors: Wahyu Rizki Harwoto, Mohammad Rondhi, Rokhani Rokhani, Anik Suwandari
      Pages: 96 - 109
Abstract: Smallholder Farmer (PR) dominate the sugarcane supply for national sugar production. That indicates sugar production depends on the sustainability of sugarcane’s supply from smallholder sugarcane farming. 34.4 percent of sugarcane farmers in Indonesia partner with sugarcane factories, while others decide to manage independent farming. So far, the partnership is defined by the Profit-sharing system (SBH). The number of independent farmers raises why farmers decide independent farming rather than partnership. Otherwise, government through 593/TI.050/E/7/2019 propose a policy for sugarcane factories to obtain sugarcane with Direct System. This situation raises the pros and cons at the farmer's level to decide it. A direct Payment System (SPT) is a buy-sell transaction within farmers without sustainability. One of the sugar factories performing SBH partnership is PG Kebon Agung, located in Malang with a vast production capacity. This study aimed to describe the partnership and transaction mechanism, determine the decision-making factors of farmers participating in SBH partnerships, and compare the incomes. The analytical method is descriptive-qualitative, logistic regression analysis, and comparative income analysis. The results showed that SBH has advantages in assisting farmers but has weaknesses in payment times. This is the opposite of SPT, which provides faster payment times. The amount of SBH farming income is also more significant than SPT. So this study suggests that SBH farmers are suitable for farmers who have a shortage of capital. At the same time, SPT is suitable for farmers with more capital who need a faster cash flow.

  • The Effect of Budget Deficit in Indonesia: A Comparative Study

    • Authors: Nurul Istiqomah, Izza Mafruhah
      Pages: 110 - 119
Abstract: This study aims to analyze the relationship between budget deficits and economic growth based on Keynesian, Neoclassical, and Ricardian Equivalent theories, and to explain the relationship between inflation, poverty, world crude oil prices, and government consumption on economic growth. Time-series data in Indonesia from 1981 to 2019 were analyzed using the Domowitz-El Badawi ECM and VAR methods. The results show that the Ricardian Equivalence is proven to have occured in the short-term in Indonesia, while in the long-term, budget deficit shows a positive impact on economic growth in Indonesia and supports the Keynesian perspective. In the short term, only inflation and government consumption show an impact on economic development: while inflation has a negative effect. In the long run, budget deficit, inflation, poverty, and world oil prices all affect economic growth, while government consumption does not. This proves that government consumption, a fiscal policy, is a policy that has only a short-term effect on economic growth. This study recommends that policies financed by budget deficit are used for long-term investments, such as investment in the education, health, and infrastructure sectors, in order to generate a long-term effect on economic growth.
