  • Developing investor relations and strategic financial communication:
           Contemporary opportunities, risks, and tensions

      Abstract: Researchers investigating investor relations (IR) in general and the growth of alternative finance in particular are popularising the term strategic financial communication to cover a broader remit than traditional IR territories. Despite their efforts, IR and public relations (PR) research in this area remains limited. In increasing that research, we examine five diverse equity crowdfunding (ECF) platforms in different nations to evaluate what is involved in opening up financial practices through engaging strategically with diverse communities, and through balancing risk communication. We found that despite the potential for enlarging the egalitarianism by extending participation more widely, major disparities and tensions remain. Platform businesses, caught between limited internal resources and external legal restrictions, tend to limit the investor pool; withdraw from responsibilities; perform mostly one-way communication; restrict community discussions; and bias their risk communication. These, in turn, can adversely influence risk management, especially for new and inexperienced investors and investment communities. Accordingly, we suggest how academics and professionals in IR and PR can better realise the rare combination of enlarging both economic equality and organisational profitability. We end by arguing that strategically developing financial communication through ECF in prosocial ways can enable IR and PR to contribute to the fully functioning society.

  • Competence, competencies and/or capabilities for public communication'
           A public sector study

      Abstract: Knowledge, skills, and abilities, referred to as KSAs, as well as competencies, overall competency or competence and, most recently, capabilities, are major foci in human resource literature, particularly that related to recruitment and professional development. They also have increasingly become a focus of study in public relations and corporate, government, and organisational communication. A number of national and global studies have been undertaken to identify the KSAs, competencies, and capabilities required to effectively undertake PR and communication management roles today and in the future. Recently, the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management completed an extensive review of professional qualifications and educational standards to produce a Global Body of Knowledge (GBOK), and in 2016 commenced a further stage of this research to develop a Global Capabilities Framework. This paper reports findings of a study undertaken to inform a capabilities framework for public sector communication professionals that supports and adds to the findings of the Global Alliance study and provides specific insights into the capabilities required in government communication today and into the future.

  • Facing the information void: A case study of Malaysia Airlines’ media
           relations and crisis communication during the MH370 disaster

      Abstract: The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines’ flight MH370 has been one of the most highly discussed and debated crises in recent times. The situation has put the organisation into the spotlight of global attention both as a business entity and as an extension of the Malaysian government. Drawing on mediating the media model (Pang, 2010) and information processing and knowledge management framework (Coombs, 2012), this study evaluates the air carrier’s relationship with the media and online communication strategies during the crucial first two weeks of the crisis. The data were collected from Malaysia Airlines’ traditional and new media public relations practices and were analysed using a qualitative case study methodology (Yin, 2009). This study argues that the unfavourable representation of Malaysia Airlines by its media stakeholders was complicated by both controlled and uncontrolled crisis elements ranging from information void to fragile relationship with the press.

  • Immersive simulation as a public relations pedagogical tool

      Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore immersive simulation as a pedagogical method to provide public relations students with the practical experience of media conference coordination and delivery. This experimental research involved surveying public relations writing students in Queensland, Australia before and after the simulation of a media conference in an immersion facility; images and video were projected onto three walls to simulate a range of different scenarios. The survey results indicated that students enjoyed the immersive simulation activity, that it enhanced their learning and analytical skills, and recommended the use of immersive simulation as a public relations teaching tool in the future.  Based on the results of this study, public relations educators are encouraged to consider using immersive simulation as a pedagogical tool in their courses to enhance student learning when providing students with ‘real life’ experiences is unfeasible.
